Using Silicone Mesh to Mitigate Risk of Forehead Pulse Ox Pressure Injuries

Introduction In the intensive care unit (ICU) setting, patients may require the use of a pulse ox probe on the forehead to obtain an appropriate oxygenation saturation reading. The pulse ox probe has two clear plastic sensors, through which the infrared light travels to measure oxygenation. Despite applying the sensor per manufacturer’s instructions and rotating the device location on the forehead more frequently than manufacturer recommendations, the sensor can still cause a medical device-related pressure injury. Methods Silicone mesh dressing is commonly used under wet to dry dressings or under negative pressure wound therapy dressings to prevent adherence of the product to the wound bed. We surmised that placing a silicone mesh dressing under the forehead probe could mitigate the risk of pressure injury formation from the sensor while maintaining adequate oxygenation readings. Results Placing a piece of silicone mesh dressing under the forehead pulse ox probe, coupled with device repositioning every 2 hours, has eliminated this medical device-related pressure injury in our organization. Use of the dressing has demonstrated no adverse effect on the device achieving an accurate oxygen saturation reading. Discussion In the critical care setting, typical locations for obtaining oxygen saturation readings such as the finger, nose, and ear are often compromised due to low perfusion states. The thin layer of tissue on the forehead makes this area highly susceptible to medical device-related pressure injuries. As such, the forehead pulse ox probe is our last option for monitoring oxygen saturation levels. When the forehead pulse ox probe is required for effective monitoring, utilizing a silicone mesh dressing under the sensor has eliminated pressure injuries without interfering with patient monitoring of oxygen saturation levels

The dissipative quantum Duffing oscillator: a comparison of Floquet-based approaches

We study the dissipative quantum Duffing oscillator in the deep quantum regime with two different approaches: The first is based on the exact Floquet states of the linear oscillator and the nonlinearity is treated perturbatively. It well describes the nonlinear oscillator dynamics away from resonance. The second, in contrast, is applicable at and in the vicinity of a N-photon resonance and it exploits quasi-degenerate perturbation theory for the nonlinear oscillator in Floquet space. It is perturbative both in driving and nonlinearity. A combination of both approaches yields the possibility to cover the whole range of driving frequencies. As an example we discuss the dissipative dynamics of the Duffing oscillator near and at the one-photon resonance.Comment: 38 pages, 4 figure

A People’s History of Leisure Studies : Old Knowledge, New Knowledge and The Philadelphia Negro as a Foundational Text

There is a great realization that a professor teaching an introductory or philosophical foundations course in the field of leisure studies comes to, if that professor may not be from the dominant culture of most Western societies. This realization is as stark as their numerical presence in their respective departments. Why are the philosophical foundations of the field devoid of the experiences, voices, and perspectives populations of color, or even more broadly, the populations of the global majority? And, why is there an absence of historical discussions on the field’s role in perpetrating or condoning activities that hindered or constrained populations of color full access, enjoyment, and articulation of leisure? As we move forward in the field more globally, thinking and discussing the new and progressive ways that we can conceive the sociology of leisure, it is imperative that we rethink our philosophical foundations in reconciliation of the potential harm it may have caused (and may continue to harm) and the actual good it can invoke in assisting the myriad of scholars who are pushing more progressive efforts for a critical leisure paradigm (Spracklen, Lashua, Sharpe and Swain, 2017). The objectives of this manuscript are: 1) to briefly categorize the research in the field on Race and ethnicity; 2) to outline the key canonical texts of the field; 3) to consider and reconceptualize a racially and ethnically inclusive foundation for the field utilizing The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study as an example; and, 4) to identify some of the specific areas that this change and inclusion would impact or realign the field’s history

A Case Study of Emmett Scott High School from 1965-1970

The purpose of this case study is to examine the roles that educators and students played in the social and academic culture of Emmet Scott High. Emmett Scott High opened in 1920 as a segregated school for African Americans in the city of Rock Hill. Although it closed in 1970, it still remains a symbol of pride of the African American Community in Rock Hill South Carolina. Many of its students and faculty revere it as a place central to the schooling experience of the students who attended. Today, it currently operates as a community center for the area. The memories of a the last principal, teaching staff, and students were collected and shaped into a rich story about Emmett Scott High\u27s life before the beginning of desegregation process. All the interviews and opinions are from the individuals who worked or attended Emmett Scott High. Their narratives contain a number of examples of what the life at Emmett Scott High was like before, during, and after the desegregation process. The participant\u27s stories help to illustrate the flow of educational process in the Emmett Scott community in Rock Hill, the problems which the school encountered, and the way these problems were addressed. The study has great significance in society today because through the study it has been possible to understand some of the major issues that are related to racism and discrimination in society and its impacts or effects especially to the people on whom it is being practiced. The study of Emmett Scott High School may help clarify the many persistent issues of racism in academic institutions today. Through this process of building an understanding by giving voice to the past we may learn more about how racism takes place in society and how it can deny some of the people in society equal opportunities The school taught the students not only academics, but also how to live with racism and lack of freedom. It appears that there is a strong opinion among many who were associated with the school that had caring environment. Academically, the school had many competent teachers who managed to teach with much fewer resources than what was available in other schools. Socially, the school community was close knit and many of the teachers knew their students and their families personally
