    The Feasibility of Cymbopogon Citratus (Lemongrass) Leaves Extract as Perfume

    Lemongrass leaves extract as a perfume provides consumers with a fresh lemony and grassy scent. This study focused on the feasibility of Cymbopogon citratus (Lemongrass) leaves extract as a perfume in terms of smell longevity and odor strength and determine the respondents’ responses toward the fragrance using the perfume. The perfume was attained using the extracted lemongrass fragrance oil, fixative, DPG, perfume-grade ethyl alcohol, and distilled water. A descriptive survey research design was employed in this study to determine the responses of 20 respondents using the perfume of lemongrass leaf extract. According to the data gathered, all of the respondents aged around 10-30 are regular users to wear perfumes. Most (75%) of the respondents were female perfume users. In line with the results, lemongrass leaf extract as a perfume in terms of smell longevity and odor strength garnered a mean of 3.4 and 3.3, respectively, and with an overall mean of 3.3, which denotes Agree which indicated moderate smell longevity and odor strength. Lastly, the respondents perceived good responses toward lemongrass perfume with a mean of 3.1 which denotes Agree. Thus, based on the data and results garnered, lemongrass leaf extract was feasible as perfume

    2-In-1 Motion and Sound Powered Desk Lamp

    For elders and PWDs, it is sometimes arduous for them to reach the switch of the light and turn it on. Hence, innovating new and unique light bulbs might help them and it can be favorable for students, children, and the elderly. This study aimed to create a 2-in-1 motion and sound-powered desk lamp in terms of detecting different hand motions and sound sources. The device was assembled by programming the code of the Arduino. Different wires served their purpose and were then connected to the Arduino. Quantitative observation was utilized in this study in which a series of testing was conducted to determine the sound and motion sensitivity of the 2-in-1 motion and sound-powered desk lamp. The results showed that the motion and sound sensitivity were both rated excellent in turning the device on by 5 different hand motions (back and forth vertical and horizontal handwave motion, raising the front and back parts of the hand, pushing the palm towards the sensor, and peace sign hand gesture) and 3 specified sound sources (handclap, knocking, and tapping an object) The study concluded that the 2-in-1 motion and sound Powered desk lamp has a high sound and motion sensitivity which enables it to emit light automatically

    The protympanum, protiniculum and subtensor recess: an endoscopic morphological anatomy study

    Objectives: An anatomical study was performed to describe the endoscopic anatomy and variations of the protympanum, including classification of the protiniculum and subtensor recess. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of video recordings of cadaveric dissections and surgical procedures, which included visualisation of the protympanum, across 4 tertiary university referral centres over a 16-month period. A total of 97 ears were used in the analysis. Results: A quadrangular conformation of the protympanum was seen in 60 per cent of ears and a triangular conformation in 40 per cent. The protiniculum was type A (ridge) in 58 per cent, type B (bridge) in 23 per cent and type C (absent) in 19 per cent. The subtensor recess was type A (absent) in 30 per cent, type B (shallow) in 48 per cent and type C (deep) in 22 per cent. Conclusion: The protympanum is an area that has been ignored for many years because of difficulties in visualising it with an operating microscope. However, modern endoscopic equipment has changed this, providing detailed anatomical knowledge fundamental to ensuring the safety of endoscopic surgical procedures in the region

    AbstractBackgroundRheumatoid arthritis is a widely prevalent autoimmune disorder with suggested genetic predisposition.ObjectivesThe aim of this study is to detect the pattern of genetic polymorphism of methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR C677 T and A1298 C), transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1 T869 C) and lymphotoxin-α (LT-α A252G) in patients having rheumatoid arthritis and correlate these patterns to disease activity and serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), B-Cell Activating Factor (BAFF), and osteopontin.MethodsA total of 194 subjects, 90 controls and 104 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were genotyped for MTHFR C677 T and A1298 C, TGF-β1 T869 C and LT-α A252G polymorphisms using a methodology based on PCR-RFLP. Also serum levels of TNF-α, osteopontin and BAFF were measured by ELISA kits.ResultsThe CT genotype and T allele of MTHFR C677 T and GG genotype and G allele of LT-α A252G are associated with the risk of RA and with higher levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine, TNF-α in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.ConclusionOur findings suggest that there is association between MTHFR C677 T and LT-α A252G genes polymorphisms and increased risk of RA in this sample of Egyptian population

    ResumoAntecedentesA artrite reumatoide é uma doença autoimune amplamente prevalente com sugerida predisposição genética.ObjetivosDetectar o padrão de polimorfismo dos genes metilenotetrahidrofolato redutase (MTHFR C677T e A1298C), fator de crescimento transformador β1 (TGF‐β1 T869C) e linfotoxina‐α (LT‐α A252G) em pacientes com artrite reumatoide e correlacionar esses padrões com a atividade da doença e os níveis séricos de fator de necrose tumoral alfa (TNF‐α), fator ativador de linfócitos B (BAFF) e osteopontina.MétodosForam genotipados 194 indivíduos – 90 controles e 104 com artrite reumatoide – à procura de polimorfismos dos genes MTHFR C677T e A1298C, TGF‐β1 T869C e LT‐α A252G com uma metodologia baseada na PCR‐RFLP.     Evaluation of Different Priming Agents with Conventional and Bioactive Self-Adhesive Resin Cements on Shear Bond Strength to Zirconia

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different priming agents on the shear bond strength (SBS) of conventional and bioactive self-adhesive resin cements to zirconia. One hundred and twenty zirconia discs were randomly divided into four main groups according to the priming agents used (n = 30): no priming agent (control), zirconia primer (Z-PRIME Plus), universal adhesive (All-Bond Universal), and universal ceramic primer (Monobond N). Then, each group was subdivided into three subgroups according to the type of self-adhesive resin cement used: TheraCem, Activa BioActive, and RelyX U200 Automix (n = 10). All specimens were subjected to thermocycling. The mean SBS data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA, followed by multiple comparison Bonferroni test. Without the application of priming agents (control), most of the specimens failed during thermocycling. The priming agent, cement type, and their interaction had a significant effect on the SBS to zirconia (p < 0.001). Only the type of priming agent showed a significant effect on the mode of failure (p < 0.001), resulting in mainly mixed failure with Monobond N and adhesive failure with other primers. Regardless of the type of primer, Bioactive resin cements did not improve the SBS to zirconia compared to conventional cements

    Effects of hospital facilities on patient outcomes after cancer surgery: an international, prospective, observational study

    Background Early death after cancer surgery is higher in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) compared with in high-income countries, yet the impact of facility characteristics on early postoperative outcomes is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the association between hospital infrastructure, resource availability, and processes on early outcomes after cancer surgery worldwide.Methods A multimethods analysis was performed as part of the GlobalSurg 3 study-a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study of patients who had surgery for breast, colorectal, or gastric cancer. The primary outcomes were 30-day mortality and 30-day major complication rates. Potentially beneficial hospital facilities were identified by variable selection to select those associated with 30-day mortality. Adjusted outcomes were determined using generalised estimating equations to account for patient characteristics and country-income group, with population stratification by hospital.Findings Between April 1, 2018, and April 23, 2019, facility-level data were collected for 9685 patients across 238 hospitals in 66 countries (91 hospitals in 20 high-income countries; 57 hospitals in 19 upper-middle-income countries; and 90 hospitals in 27 low-income to lower-middle-income countries). The availability of five hospital facilities was inversely associated with mortality: ultrasound, CT scanner, critical care unit, opioid analgesia, and oncologist. After adjustment for case-mix and country income group, hospitals with three or fewer of these facilities (62 hospitals, 1294 patients) had higher mortality compared with those with four or five (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 3.85 [95% CI 2.58-5.75]; p&lt;0.0001), with excess mortality predominantly explained by a limited capacity to rescue following the development of major complications (63.0% vs 82.7%; OR 0.35 [0.23-0.53]; p&lt;0.0001). Across LMICs, improvements in hospital facilities would prevent one to three deaths for every 100 patients undergoing surgery for cancer.Interpretation Hospitals with higher levels of infrastructure and resources have better outcomes after cancer surgery, independent of country income. Without urgent strengthening of hospital infrastructure and resources, the reductions in cancer-associated mortality associated with improved access will not be realised

    Preoperative Imaging Modalities to Predict the Risk of Regional Nodal Recurrence in Well-Differentiated Thyroid Cancers

    Abstract Introduction Thyroid cancer incidence has increased in the previous 2 decades. Preoperative identification of lymph node metastasis is a suggested risk factor associated with recurrence following thyroidectomy. Objectives We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of preoperative radiologic investigations of nodal status in determining the postoperative risk of regional nodal recurrence in cases of well-differentiated thyroid cancer. Methods This is a case series. We retrospectively reviewed data, including preoperative ultrasonography and/or computed tomography results, on patients who underwent total thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer at our hospital between 2006 and 2012. Prognostic factors for predicting recurrence, including age, sex, tumor diameter, and nodal diameter, were evaluated. Results Total thyroidectomy was performed on 24 male and 74 female patients (median age, 43 years). The median follow-up time was 21 months. Sixty-eight patients had papillary thyroid cancer, and 30 had follicular cancer. Nodal recurrence was evident in 30% of patients, and 4% of patients died. Identification of lymph node involvement during preoperative radiologic investigations was strongly prognostic for recurrence: 35.3% of patients with positive preoperative ultrasonography findings and 62.5% of those with positive preoperative computed tomography findings had recurrence (p = 0.01). Conclusions Preoperative identification of lymph node metastasis on radiologic studies was correlated with an increased risk of regional nodal recurrence in well-differentiated thyroid cancer. Computed tomography was superior to ultrasonography in detecting metastatic nodal involvement preoperatively and is therefore recommended for preoperative assessment and postoperative follow-up
