On the Measurement of Change in Medical Research
Measuring of change is essential in medical research. However, these measurements may have different goals and, traditionally, the ability to measure change has focused on sensitivity in a statistical sense, whereas little attention has been directed to the appropriate interpretation and analysis of change indicators. The present report examines some of the most important issues involved in measuring change with pre and post-test data when ordinal scales are used, and the conceptual problems pertaining to the use of these scales are also discussed. It can be said that there is still no agreement about the most adequate strategy for assessing health status change in a group of subjects, what caused the introduction of many indicators, most of which variations of the ES (Effect size: the mean of change scores divided by the standard deviation of the baseline scores) concept. The adequate interpretation of change scores in these cases demands a high degree of knowledge about what these changes mean to specific sub-groups of patients, as well as detailed information on their situation at baseline, such as score distributions. Researchers should strive for interpretations that take into account what "change" means for different patients
The origin and genetic diversity of the causal agent of Asian soybean rust, Phakopsora pachyrhizi, in South America
A sequenceâbased approach was used to investigate molecular genetic variations in Phakopsora pachyrhizi, an obligate biotrophic pathogen that causes Asian soybean rust. In Argentina, the samples came from urediniumâbearing leaves taken from 11 soybean fields; in Brazil, the samples comprised urediniospores from leaves of 10 soybean genotypes that had been grown in three experimental stations during two growing seasons. PCRâbased cloning techniques were used to generate DNA sequences for two gene regions and alignments were supplemented with data from GenBank. A total of 575 sequences for the internal transcribed spacer region (18 ribotypes) and 160 partial sequences for a housekeeping gene encoding ADPâribosylation factor (10 haplotypes) were obtained. Ribotype accumulation curves predicted that about 20 bacterial clones would recover 5â6 ribotypes (c. 70â80% of the total molecular variation) per locality. The samples from the three experimental stations in Brazil displayed most (14 out of 16) ribotypes found worldwide; the lack of genetic structure and differentiation at a diverse geographic scale suggests that both local and distant sources provide airborne inoculum during disease establishment. Soybean genotypes with resistance genes for the Asian soybean rust did not decrease the molecular genetic variation of fungal populations.Instituto de GenĂ©ticaFil: Jorge, V.R. Quantum Chaos in A=46--50 Atomic Nuclei
The spectral statistics of low--lying states of several shell nuclei are
studied with realistic shell--model calculations. For Ca isotopes, we find
significant deviations from the predictions of the random--matrix theory which
suggest that some spherical nuclei are not as chaotic in nature as the

Modelling of photonic wire Bragg Gratings
Some important properties of photonic wire Bragg grating structures have been investigate. The design, obtained as a generalisation of the full-width gap grating, has been modelled using 3D finite-difference time-domain simulations. Different types of stop-band have been observed. The impact of the grating geometry on the lowest order (longest wavelength) stop-band has been investigated - and has identified deeply indented configurations where reduction of the stop-bandwidth and of the reflectivity occurred. Our computational results have been substantially validated by an experimental demonstration of the fundamental stop-band of photonic wire Bragg gratings fabricated on silicon-on-insulator material. The accuracy of two distinct 2D computational models based on the effective index method has also been studied - because of their inherently much greater rapidity and consequent utility for approximate initial designs. A 2D plan-view model has been found to reproduce a large part of the essential features of the spectral response of full 3D models
All-optical switching and strong coupling using tunable whispering-gallery-mode microresonators
We review our recent work on tunable, ultrahigh quality factor
whispering-gallery-mode bottle microresonators and highlight their applications
in nonlinear optics and in quantum optics experiments. Our resonators combine
ultra-high quality factors of up to Q = 3.6 \times 10^8, a small mode volume,
and near-lossless fiber coupling, with a simple and customizable mode structure
enabling full tunability. We study, theoretically and experimentally, nonlinear
all-optical switching via the Kerr effect when the resonator is operated in an
add-drop configuration. This allows us to optically route a single-wavelength
cw optical signal between two fiber ports with high efficiency. Finally, we
report on progress towards strong coupling of single rubidium atoms to an
ultra-high Q mode of an actively stabilized bottle microresonator.Comment: 20 pages, 24 figures. Accepted for publication in Applied Physics B.
