    Learning from the Experiences of Collegiate Athletes Living through a Season- or Career-Ending Injury

    An athlete’s identity is often related to the goals of their team and their ability to achieve excellence in sport. A threat to an athlete’s identity is a season- or career-ending injury. Athletes can respond to season- or career-ending injuries in ways detrimental to their psychosocial well-being (Ivarsson, Tranaeus, Johnson, & Stenling 2017). This study built upon existing knowledge by seeking to better understand the lived experiences of Division I collegiate athletes who experienced a season- or career-ending injury. There is a need for ongoing recommendations for helping athletes process their injuries. Researchers used a descriptive phenomenological approach. Researchers interviewed ten college athletes who experienced a season- or career-ending injury. Themes included: (1) physical and emotional stress, (2) resistance to resiliency, (3) importance of relationships with others, and (4) appreciation and cultivation for new possibilities outside of sport. This research provided insight for behavioral health professionals on injury response. This included the need for Posttraumatic Growth responses such as (1) building strong support pre- and post-injury, (2) recognizing healthy coping mechanisms, (3) cultivating new identities for athletes, (4) helping an athlete with identity loss, (5) helping athletes recognize new possibilities post-injury, and (6) helping an athlete maintain an appreciation for life

Recently, consumer electronics have decreased in size, driving the need for smaller electronic components. To fill this need, researchers have created polycrystalline barium titanate with individual grains in the nanometer scale. With this decrease in size, many problems arise. This paper will outline the effects on the dielectric properties due to shrinking the individual grains, as well as discuss techniques for dielectric measurement of this material

    Getting a Grip on My Depression: How Latina Adolescents Experience, Self-Manage, and Seek Treatment for Depressive Symptoms

    Latina (female) adolescents are more likely to experience depressive symptoms and less likely to receive mental health services than their non-Latina White peers. We aimed to develop a framework that explains how Latina adolescents experience, self-manage, and seek treatment for depressive symptoms. Latina young women (n = 25, M age = 16.8 years) who experienced depressive symptoms during adolescence were recruited from clinical and community settings and interviewed about experiences with depressive symptoms. The framework was developed using constructivist grounded theory methods. Participants experienced a psychosocial problem that we labeled being overburdened and becoming depressed. They responded to this problem through a five-phase psychosocial process that we labeled Getting a Grip on My Depression. Family members, peer groups, and mainstream authorities were influential in how participants experienced these phases. Future research should further develop this framework in diverse samples of Latino/a youth. Clinicians can use this framework in discussions with Latina adolescents about depressive symptoms

    Insights from individuals with chronic conditions in the context of COVID-19

    The objective of this prospective survey series was to evaluate knowledge and concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic among individuals with one or more chronic conditions, including cardiometabolic, autoimmune, respiratory and cancer diagnoses. Two surveys were distributed consisting of up to 55 items (March; n=1069) and up to 71 items (April, n=1126), with 24 items repeated from the first survey. Questions focused on healthcare access, barriers and concerns related to the COVID-19 virus. Descriptive analysis evaluated central tendencies, spread, and frequencies of the demographic data, disease states, and survey results within and between the two survey timepoints. Results from 416 individuals (38.9%) on survey 1 and 425 (37.7%) on survey 2 were analyzed. Participants were predominantly female (85%) and white (67%) with 7% residing in rural areas and 69% employed. Respondents reported an average of 2 chronic conditions and 62% would be classified as “at risk” for COVID-19 complications by the CDC. Only 20% reported a conversation about COVID-19 with a healthcare provider, 9% reported anxiety, 35% indicated loneliness. Level of concern about COVID-19 contracting the disease, cost of treatment/complications, medical access, and process of being treated was associated with increased anxiety (p\u3c0.001) and wearing a facemask (p=0.01). Analysis suggests that analyzing concern and its association with health behaviors and anxiety should be a priority for innovative solutions. Insights into how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting individuals with chronic conditions are imperative to inform tailored interventions to support individuals at higher risk of serious complications and death. MABEL’s legs are currently terminated in point feet. Feet would improve the energy efficiency of walking and running, and would improve the ability to walk over uneven ground.     Exercises and Adversaries: The Risks of Military Exercises

    We argue that military exercises can create four types of risk—accidents, hostility, reciprocity, and crises. The level of risk an exercise creates is determined by two factors. The first factor is the political environment between the country running the exercise and the potential adversary. The second factor is the perceived level of threat an exercise creates for an adversary. Exercises that have close proximity to the adversary, have high magnitude, and have low transparency all increase the threat level of a military exercise. This creates incentives for an adversary to respond in a way that creates risks for all parties

    Towards Improved Quantum Simulations and Sensing with Trapped 2D Ion Crystals via Parametric Amplification

    Improving coherence is a fundamental challenge in quantum simulation and sensing experiments with trapped ions. Here we discuss, experimentally demonstrate, and estimate the potential impacts of two different protocols that enhance, through motional parametric excitation, the coherent spin-motion coupling of ions obtained with a spin-dependent force. The experiments are performed on 2D crystal arrays of approximately one hundred 9^9Be+^+ ions confined in a Penning trap. By modulating the trapping potential at close to twice the center-of-mass mode frequency, we squeeze the motional mode and enhance the spin-motion coupling while maintaining spin coherence. With a stroboscopic protocol, we measure 5.4±0.95.4 \pm 0.9 dB of motional squeezing below the ground-state motion, from which theory predicts a 1010 dB enhancement in the sensitivity for measuring small displacements using a recently demonstrated protocol [Science 373\textbf{373}, 673 (2021)]. With a continuous squeezing protocol, we measure and accurately calibrate the parametric coupling strength. Theory suggests this protocol can be used to improve quantum spin squeezing, limited in our system by off-resonant light scatter. We illustrate numerically the trade-offs between strong parametric amplification and motional dephasing in the form of center-of-mass frequency fluctuations for improving quantum spin squeezing in our set-up.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    Characteristics and comparative clinical outcomes of prisoner versus non-prisoner populations hospitalized with COVID-19

    Prisons in the United States have become a hotbed for spreading COVID-19 among incarcerated individuals. COVID-19 cases among prisoners are on the rise, with more than 143,000 confirmed cases to date. However, there is paucity of data addressing clinical outcomes and mortality in prisoners hospitalized with COVID-19. An observational study of all patients hospitalized with COVID-19 between March 10 and May 10, 2020 at two Henry Ford Health System hospitals in Michigan. Clinical outcomes were compared amongst hospitalized prisoners and non-prisoner patients. The primary outcomes were intubation rates, in-hospital mortality, and 30-day mortality. Multivariable logistic regression and Cox-regression models were used to investigate primary outcomes. Of the 706 hospitalized COVID-19 patients (mean age 66.7 ± 16.1 years, 57% males, and 44% black), 108 were prisoners and 598 were non-prisoners. Compared to non-prisoners, prisoners were more likely to present with fever, tachypnea, hypoxemia, and markedly elevated inflammatory markers. Prisoners were more commonly admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) (26.9% vs. 18.7%), required vasopressors (24.1% vs. 9.9%), and intubated (25.0% vs. 15.2%). Prisoners had higher unadjusted inpatient mortality (29.6% vs. 20.1%) and 30-day mortality (34.3% vs. 24.6%). In the adjusted models, prisoner status was associated with higher in-hospital death (odds ratio, 2.32; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.33 to 4.05) and 30-day mortality (hazard ratio, 2.00; 95% CI, 1.33 to 3.00). In this cohort of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, prisoner status was associated with more severe clinical presentation, higher rates of ICU admissions, vasopressors requirement, intubation, in-hospital mortality, and 30-day mortality
