    An Analysis of Multiple Stressors on Resident Benthic Communities in a California Agricultural Stream

    This 3-year study (2015-2017) was designed to characterize benthic communities (macroinvertebrates) and physical habitat in an agriculturally dominated waterbody in the Central Coast area of California (Santa Maria River). Benthic communities as represented by various metrics that represent richness, composition, tolerance/intolerance and trophic measures were used as response variables for the various stressors described below. Concurrent water quality evaluations, physical sediment parameters (grain size and total organic carbon [TOC]), pyrethroids, bulk metals—including simultaneously extracted metals (SEM) and acid volatile sulfides (AVS) ratios—and nutrients were measured. The relationship of various benthic metrics to physical habitat metrics, pyrethroids, metals, nutrients and sediment characteristics was evaluated for the 3-year data set. Total physical habitat scores in this watershed were considered to be poor. Samples collected for various sediment chemistry measurements were from depositional areas (fine grain areas primarily silt and clay) where hydrophobic chemicals such as pyrethroids could be found if sources exist. Dominant benthic taxa collected were generally considered to be tolerant to moderately tolerant of environmental stressors and rated as impaired based on a benthic index. Potentially toxic sediment concentrations of arsenic, cadmium and nickel were reported at various sites based on a comparison with existing threshold effect levels. Pyrethroid concentrations interpreted by using a highly protective toxics units approach with a laboratory sensitive taxon (Hyalella) suggested potential toxicity at various sites. Nutrient concentrations could not be interpreted within the context of potential impairment because the State of California has not developed nutrient criteria. The results of the stepwise linear regression models comparing benthic metrics with all environmental variables showed that TOC was the most important variable shaping the benthic communities. In contrast, pyrethroids, metals and physical habitat were not shown to be significant factors shaping benthic communities. The summary multivariate canonical correlation analysis indicated that less stressed, more diverse benthic communities tended to be associated more with TOC-rich finer sediments and lower concentrations of phosphorous-based nutrients, and more stressed, less diverse benthic communities tended to be associated with less organically rich, somewhat less fine sediments and higher phosphorous concentrations

    Glaciochemical Studies and Estimated Net Mass Balances for Rennick Glacier Area, Antarctica

    Two snow and ice cores from the Rennick Glacier area, Antarctica (study area center point lat 71° 15\u27 S, long 162° 30\u27 E) were analyzed for the chemical species: chloride, sodium, reactive silicate, sulfate and nitrate. Core E1O (6.35 m) was taken from Evans Névé, a large accumulation basin at the head of Rennick Glacier. Core M1 (4.35 m) was extracted from the accumulation zone on the central plateau of the Morozumi Range, a small mountain massif bordering Rennick Glacier. Cores E1O and M1 span the time periods from 1929 to 1981 and from 1971 to 1981, respectively, as dated using seasonal variations in chloride (E10) and sulfate (M1) concentrations. An estimated net balance of 50 kg m-2 a-1 was derived for site E10 and of 182 kg m- 2 a-I for site Ml. The difference in net mass balance may be explained by elevational differences (M1 1400 m a.s.l., E1O 2305 m a.s.l .). Recent (1973 to 1980) increases in sodium, silicate and sulfate at site E1O may be linked to decreases in Antarctic pack-ice extent (Kukla and Gavin 1981) for the same period

    The Glaciochemistry of Snowpits from Quelccaya Ice Cap, Peru, 1982

    We present glaciochemical data from a pilot study of two snow-pits from Quelccaya ice cap, Peruvian Andes. These are the first samples to be analyzed from Quelccaya for nitrate and sulfate by ion chromatography (IC), for nitrate-plus-nitrite, reactive silicate and reactive iron by colorimetry, and for sodium by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The 3 m pits used in this study represent a one year record of mass accumulation and the 29 samples collected provide the first glaciochemical data from this area which can be compared with glaciochemical studies from other locations. Reactive iron, reactive silicate and sodium, and the profiles of \u3e0.63µm microparticles from Thompson and others (1984) are coincident, suggesting that transport and deposition into this area of each species are controlled by similar processes. The common source is probably local, resulting from crustaI weathering. In general, the reactive silicate values are lower than those observed in other alpine glacier ice. The highest sulfate and nitrate values were observed in the upper few centimeters of the snow-pit. Most of the sulfate concentrations were less than 3 µM and are similar to values obtained for fresh surface snows from Bolivia (Stallard and Edmond 1981). Since biological gaseous emissions are thought to be the major source of sulfur and nitrogen to the atmosphere over the Amazon basin, the sulfate and nitrate fluctuations may be due to seasonal biological input and/or seasonal shifts in wind direction bringing material to Quelccaya. With only one exception, the colorimetric nitrate-plus-nitrite data were higher than the IC nitrate data. Unfortunately, the IC analyses were conducted 81 d after the colorimetric analyses. The difference between the two data sets could be attributable to the following; (I) the colorimetric technique may yield erroneously high results as suggested for polar ice by Herron (1982), (2) the IC technique yields erroneously low results due, in part, to the possible exclusion of nitrite concentrations, and/or (3) nitrite was lost via biological removal during the 81 d period before the IC analyses. If the IC data are correct, the mean nitrate value is O.4 µM (n = 29). This value is similar to those reported from pre-industrial aged polar ice (Herron 1982). If the colorimetric mean value (1.1 µM) is correct, it is similar to colorimetrically determined values from other high-elevation alpine ice (Lyons and Mayewski 1983)

    Ionospheric corrections to precise time transfer using GPS

    The free electrons in the earth's ionosphere can retard the time of reception of GPS signals received at a ground station, compared to their time in free space, by many tens of nanoseconds, thus limiting the accuracy of time transfer by GPS. The amount of the ionospheric time delay is proportional to the total number of electrons encountered by the wave on its path from each GPS satellite to a receiver. This integrated number of electrons is called Total Electron Content, or TEC. Dual frequency GPS receivers designed by Allen Osborne Associates, Inc. (AOA) directly measure both the ionospheric differential group delay and the differential carrier phase advance for the two GPS frequencies and derive from this the TEC between the receiver and each GPS satellite in track. The group delay information is mainly used to provide an absolute calibration to the relative differential carrier phase, which is an extremely precise measure of relative TEC. The AOA Mini-Rogue ICS-4Z and the AOA TurboRogue ICS-4000Z receivers normally operate using the GPS P code, when available, and switch to cross-correlation signal processing when the GPS satellites are in the Anti-Spoofing (A-S) mode and the P code is encrypted. An AOA ICS-Z receiver has been operated continuously for over a year at Hanscom AFB, MA to determine the statistics of the variability of the TEC parameter using signals from up to four different directions simultaneously. The 4-channel ICS-4Z and the 8-channel ICS-4000Z, have proven capabilities to make precise, well calibrated, measurements of the ionosphere in several directions simultaneously. In addition to providing ionospheric corrections for precise time transfer via satellite, this dual frequency design allows full code and automatic codeless operation of both the differential group delay and differential carrier phase for numerous ionospheric experiments being conducted. Statistical results of the data collected from the ICS-4Z during the initial year of ionospheric time delay in the northeastern U.S., and initial results with the ICS-4000Z, will be presented

    Computer modeling the fatigue crack growth rate behavior of metals in corrosive environments

    The objective of this task was to develop a method to digitize FCP (fatigue crack propagation) kinetics data, generally presented in terms of extensive da/dN-Delta K pairs, to produce a file for subsequent linear superposition or curve-fitting analysis. The method that was developed is specific to the Numonics 2400 Digitablet and is comparable to commercially available software products as Digimatic(sup TM 4). Experiments demonstrated that the errors introduced by the photocopying of literature data, and digitization, are small compared to those inherent in laboratory methods to characterize FCP in benign and aggressive environments. The digitizing procedure was employed to obtain fifteen crack growth rate data sets for several aerospace alloys in aggressive environments

    HI Observations of the Stephan's Quintet

    Using the VLA, we have made spectral-line and continuum observations of the neutral hydrogen in the direction of the compact group of galaxies Stephan's Quintet. The high-velocity clouds between 5600 and 6600 km/s, the disk of the foreground galaxy, NGC 7320, at 800 km/s, the extended continuum ridge near the center of the group, and 3 faint dwarf-like galaxies in the surrounding field were imaged with C, CS, and D arrays. Four of the HI clouds previously detected are confirmed. The two largest HI features are coincident with and concentrated mainly along separate large tidal tails that extend eastward. The most diffuse of the four clouds is resolved into two clumps, one coincide with tidal features south of NGC 7318a and the other devoid of any detectable stellar or Halfa sources. The two compact clouds, along the same line of sight, have peak emission at luminous infrared and bright Halfa sources probably indicative of star-forming activity. The total amount of HI detected at high redshifts is ~ 10**10Msol. As in previous HI studies of the group, no detectable emission was measured at the positions of any high-redshift galaxies so that any HI still bound to their disks must be less than 2.4 x 10**7Msol.Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ and tentatively scheduled for the May 2002 issue.     Building Writing Identities: Integrating Explicit Strategies with Authentic Writing Experiences to Engage At-Promise Writers

    The message of what constitutes good writing instruction, though promulgated for decades, has not always nor consistently trickled down to P–12 schools, where writing instruction is often focused on preparing students for success on standardized tests and where prescriptive and formulaic approaches to teaching writing are prevalent. Part of the reason for this might be that teachers are not always familiar enough with authentic writing experiences that adequately engage all learners. As scholars in the fields of literacy and special education, respectively, the authors combine their collective expertise to address this concern. They offer skills-based tools and strategies that can be integrated into authentic writing experiences to promote critical thinking and creativity, build students’ writing identities, and help at-promise learners gain and maintain writing momentum. A balanced approach that harmonizes different orientations and paradigms lends credibility to this piece as an example of what educators joining together to form a coalition for student support can look like. This article is positioned to bridge the divide between seemingly dichotomous perspectives. Through the strategies and ideas the authors share, teachers will be better equipped to give at-promise writers reasons to believe in themselves and their writerly capabilities
