    The April 5, 2001 symposium consisted of an informal roundtable discussion for the presenters from 2:30-4:30 p.m., followed by a public evening program, from 6:00-8:30 p.m., which featured a role-playing portrayal of a mock disciplinary proceeding about a dispute over lawyer advertising. Participants in the roundtable discussion were: Ronald D. Rotunda, the Albert E. Jenner, Jr. Professor of Law at the University of Illinois College of Law; Louise L. Hill, Professor of Law at the Widener University School of Law; and William Hornsby, Legal Counsel to the American Bar Association, Commission on Responsibility in Client Development. The Moot Court program included William Hornsby, Legal Counsel to the American Bar Association, as prosecutor from the state bar\u27s disciplinary council; Tom Spahn as defense lawyer for the firm; Ted Allen as chair of disciplinary council; and Louise L. Hill, Ronald Rotunda, and William Spruill as disciplinary council members. Rodney A. Smolla, the George E. Allen Chair in Law at the University of Richmond School of Law served as program coordinator and moderator

    The spacing effect: Consolidation or differential encoding?

    Theoretical explanations of the spacing effect fall into two classes: those that attribute the advantage of two spaced presentations over two massed presentations to better consolidation of the first presentation, and those that attribute the advantage to better encoding of the second presentation. This paper reports an experimental test of the two classes of theory. Rather than manipulate spacing, the experiment varied the information processing difficulty of the activity interpolated between two presentations of an item. Consolidation-type theories imply decreasing consolidation with increasing difficulty of the interpolated activity. In fact, recall performance following two presentations separated by a difficult task was found to be slightly but consistently better than performance following two presentations separated by an easy task.     Conceptualizations of Romantic Relationship Commitment Among Low-Income African American Adolescents

    Few studies have examined adolescents’ understanding of romantic relationship commitment, particularly among African American youth. Using three waves of semistructured interviews, the present descriptive study addresses this topic by exploring the ways in which 20 African American adolescents (age range 13-19 years) from low-income backgrounds conceptualize and describe commitment in romantic relationships. Qualitative analyses revealed three main themes related to defining commitment, indicating that which commitment provides, and describing the nature of commitment in different relationship contexts. Findings inform psychological research and practice relating to commitment and romantic relationships among African American adolescents

    Evapotranspiration as a Regional Climate Priority: Results from a NASA/USDA Workshop

    On April 5 to 7, 2011, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) sponsored a Workshop on Evapotranspiration (ET) in Silver Spring Maryland. The workshop was a response to a recommendation in the 2009-2011 GEO (Group on Earth Observations) Work Plan that a workshop on ET should be held to discuss issues related to ET products and services and the potential for incorporating ET activities into the 2012-2015 GEO Work Plan. The workshop had a regional emphasis, although there were several excellent international and global presentations including one on the GEWEX LANDFLUX project. The different scales of these activities suggests that a framework is needed that can accommodate both regional and global ET activities. Despite limitations with the workshop's scheduling, it attracted 76 experts who contributed informative presentations and insightful discussions. The goals of the workshop involved the exchange of information and ideas and the development of plans for providing more visibility for ET issues. Specific objectives included 1) defining the needs and requirements for evapotranspiration data in weather and climate studies, in natural and agro-ecoystem monitoring, and in water resource management; 2) reviewing the methods used to measure and model evapotranspiration; 3) assessing surface and satellite observation systems required to support ET measurement, modeling and evaluation; 4) assessing the feasibility of developing a proposal for a task on evapotranspiration for the 2012-2015 GEO Work Plan, and 5) exploring the level of support and consensus for developing a strategy for establishing evapotranspiration as an Essential Climate Variable (ECV) within the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) framework The workshop featured a combination of oral presentations and breakout group sessions focused on the above objectives. There were also poster presentations providing opportunities for one-on-one discussions of ET modeling and measurement techniques. Presentations by users of ET data set the tone for the workshop. In the USA at the national and regional levels water rights issues represent a major opportunity for ET applications. ET data play a major role in estimating water loss due to irrigation, the largest cause of consumptive water loss in the USA, particularly in the West. Irrigation requirements are relatively specific since the needs are clearly defined by the geometry and number of the irrigation systems and can be monitored with high resolution satellite data. There was a strong consensus that land surface temperature (LST) at high resolution is critical for monitoring irrigation. State governments have made commitments to more efficient water management in the western US, but they need full access to improved and more timely ET data and applications to implement this plan. Water managers also reported that in spite of the recent development of. new techniques, the procedures used in some of the water balance calculations in some states are out of date and do not take advantage of new observational and data assimilation systems. The development of ET forecasts for water management is also seen as a priority. Although ET forecasts are currently being produced on an experimental basis these predictions could be improved by considering ET as a dynamic prediction variable in models and by increasing the time resolution of these ET predictions

    Sources of socialization for interpersonal trust: an exploration of low-income Black adolescents’ experiences

    Much of the literature on interpersonal trust is quantitative in nature, using scales developed primarily with White middle-class and upper-class adults. To understand how another racial group of a different socioeconomic background and age views interpersonal trust, we considered the experiences of 22 low-income Black adolescents. The adolescents participated in a relationship education program and were interviewed about their interpersonal trust experiences. Results of a qualitative data analysis revealed that most adolescents defined interpersonal trust based on honesty and fidelity, with a particular emphasis on monogamy in romantic relationships. Adolescents identified direct messages from family members and personal relationship experiences as sources of socialization for interpersonal trust. Although some adolescents reported that the relationship education program enhanced their understanding of and willingness to trust, others maintained that trust can only be learned through personal experiences. Though the adolescents generally trusted family members, they experienced challenges trusting friends and romantic partners. Despite this, adolescents considered interpersonal trust a vital and a necessary part of romantic relationships. We discuss implications of the findings for relationship stability and satisfaction

    Two-Minute Peripheral Motion Contrast Threshold Test Predicts Older Drivers’ Collisions and Hazardous Driving in Simulator

    Older drivers’ contrast thresholds for low spatial frequency drifting Gabor stimuli at 15 degrees eccentricity were measured with a previously validated 10-minute forced-choice test and a 2-minute increasing contrast detection test (implemented on an iMac and a PC). Older drivers’ contrast thresholds significantly predict collisions, near collisions, hazardous lane excursions, and speeding, during a simulated drive with surprising hazard encounters and highway merging tasks. The 2-minute tests also correlate with each other and with the 10-minute test. The 2-minute tests are potentially suitable for use in an operational driver assessment setting

    Current levels of suppression of waterhyacinth in Florida USA by classical biological control agents

    Waterhyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms (Pontederiaceae), has been a global target for classical biological control efforts for decades. In Florida, herbicidal application is the primary control method employed, usually without regard for the activities of the three biological control agents introduced intentionally during the 1970s, namely Neochetina eichhorniae Warner, Neochetina bruchi, Hustache (Coleoptera:Curculionidae), and Niphograpta albiguttalis Warren (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). A series of field experiments from 2008 to 2010 was conducted at four Florida sites using an insecticide-check approach to quantify the current levels of suppression provided by these agents. In the field N. albiguttalis was rarely found while more than 99% of all Neochetina sp. adults were N. eichhorniae. Although it was not possible to disentangle the relative impacts of Neochetina sp. adults from larvae on individual plant variables, the larvae played a major role in reducing plant biomass and the number of inflorescences. Plots exposed to unrestricted herbivory contained 58.2% less biomass and produced 97.3% fewer inflorescences at the end of the experiments. Despite these large reductions, herbivory decreased waterhyacinth coverage by only 16.8% and most of this was attributed to a low-nutrient site where coverage was reduced disproportionately. Overall, coverage trended upwards during the course of the experiments and was always close to 100% when the plots were harvested. Although coverage is a somewhat arbitrary metric, especially for floating plants subject to compression and dispersion, it influences the perception of biological control efficacy which, in turn, directly influences herbicide management decisions in Florida. Despite waterhyacinth populations that now produce less than half as much biomass and up to 98% fewer seeds than before the deployment of biological control agents, the overall approach used to achieve maintenance control of the plant in Florida will probably not change unless new biological control agents, such as Megamelus scutellaris Berg (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), can reduce coverage significantly
