    X-ray Properties of the Abell 644 Cluster of Galaxies

    We use new ASCA observations and archival ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) data to determine the X-ray spectral properties of the intracluster gas in Abell 644. From the overall spectrum, we determine the average gas temperature to be 8.64 (+0.67,-0.56) keV, and an abundance of 0.32 (+/-0.04) Z⊙Z_{\odot}. The global ASCA and ROSAT spectra imply a cooling rate of 214 (+100,-91) M⊙M_{\odot} yr−1^{-1}. The PSPC X-ray surface brightness profile and the ASCA data suggest a somewhat higher cooling rate. We determine the gravitational mass and gas mass as a function of radius. The total gravitating mass within 1.2 Mpc is 6.2×10146.2\times10^{14} M⊙M_{\odot}, of which 20% is in the form of hot gas. There is a region of elevated temperature 1.5-5 arcmin to the west of the cluster center. The south-southwest region of the cluster also shows excess emission in the ROSAT PSPC X-ray image, aligned with the major axis of the optical cD galaxy in the center of the cluster. We argue that the cluster is undergoing or has recently undergone a minor merger. The combination of a fairly strong cooling flow and evidence for a merger make this cluster an interesting case to test the disruption of cooling flow in mergers.Comment: 26 pages LaTeX including 9 eps figures + 4 pages LaTeX tables (landscape); accepted to ApJ, uses aaspp

    Coherent charge transport through molecular wires: "Exciton blocking" and current from electronic excitations in the wire

    We consider exciton effects on current in molecular nanojunctions, using a model comprising a two two-level sites bridge connecting free electron reservoirs. Expanding the density operator in the many-electron eigenstates of the uncoupled sites, we obtain a 16X16 density matrix in the bridge subspace whose dynamics is governed by Liuoville equation that takes into account interactions on the bridge as well as electron injection and damping to and from the leads. Our consideration can be considerably simplified by using the pseudospin description based on the symmetry properties of Lie group SU(2). We study the influence of the bias voltage, the Coulomb repulsion and the energy-transfer interactions on the steady-state current and in particular focus on the effect of the excitonic interaction between bridge sites. Our calculations show that in case of non-interacting electrons this interaction leads to reduction in the current at high voltage for a homodimer bridge. In other words, we predict the effect of \textquotedblleft exciton\textquotedblright blocking. The effect of \textquotedblleft exciton\textquotedblright blocking is modified for a heterodimer bridge, and disappears for strong Coulomb repulsion at sites. In the latter case the exciton type interactions can open new channels for electronic conduction. In particular, in the case of strong Coulomb repulsion, conduction exists even when the electronic connectivity does not exist.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figure

    This paper applies recent advances in ecology to our understanding of firm development, sustainability, and economic development. The ecological literature indicates that the greater the functional richness of species in a system, the greater its resilience – that is, its ability to persist in the face of substantial changes in the environment. This paper focuses on the effects of functional richness across firm size on the ability of industries to survive in the face of economic change. Our results indicate that industries with a richness of industrial functions are more resilient to employment volatility

    The impact of artificial fragrances on the assessment of mate quality cues in body odor

    We investigated the impact of artificial fragrances on the accurate detection of biologically relevant information in human body odor. To do this, we examined cross-sensory consistency (across faces and odors) in the perception of masculinity and femininity in men and women, and how consistency is influenced by the use of artificial fragrance. Independent sets of same and opposite-sex participants rated odor samples (with and without a fragrance, N = 239 raters), and photographs (N = 130) of 20 men and 20 women. In female, but not male raters, judgments of masculinity/femininity of non-fragranced odor and faces were correlated. However, the correlation between female ratings of male facial and odor masculinity was not evident when assessing a body odor and fragrance blend. Further analysis also indicated that differences in ratings of male odor masculinity between men with very masculine or high and low levels of facial masculinity were removed by the addition of fragrance. This effect was absent in ratings of female odors by both female and male raters, suggesting sex-specificity in the effects of fragrance on odor perception. The widespread use of artificial fragrance in many modern populations raises questions about how this cultural practice influences ability to detect and utilize mate-choice relevant cues. Our findings suggest that women may be more sensitive to these cues, and therefore also to disruption of this information through fragrance use.     Nonradiative interaction and entanglement between distant atoms

    We show that nonradiative interactions between atomic dipoles placed in a waveguide can give rise to deterministic entanglement at ranges much larger than their resonant wavelength. The range increases as the dipole-resonance approaches the waveguide's cutoff frequency, caused by the giant density of photon modes near cutoff, a regime where the standard (perturbative) Markov approximation fails. We provide analytical theories for both the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes, supported by numerical simulations, and discuss possible experimental realizations.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

    The author has identified the following significant results. It was found that classifier performance was influenced by a number of temporal, methodological, and geographical factors. Best results were obtained when corn was tasselled and near the dough stage of development. Dates earlier or later in the growing season produced poor results. Atmospheric effects on results cannot be independently measured or completely separated from the effects due to the maturity stage of the crops. Poor classifier performance was observed in areas where considerable spectral confusion was present

    Impacts of Invasive Plants on Sandhill Crane (\u3ci\u3eGrus canadensis\u3c/i\u3e) Roosting Habitat

    Invasive plants continue to spread in riparian ecosystems, causing both ecological and economic damage. This research investigated the impacts of common reed, purple loosestrife, riparian shrubland, and riparian woodlands on the quality and quantity of sandhill crane roosting habitat in the central Platte River, Nebraska, using a discrete choice model. A more detailed investigation of the impacts of common reed on sandhill crane roosting habitat was performed by forecasting a spread or contraction of this invasive plant. The discrete choice model indicates that riparian woodlands had the largest negative impact on sandhill crane roosting habitat. The forecasting results predict that a contraction of common reed could increase sandhill crane habitat availability by 50%, whereas an expansion could reduce the availability by as much as 250%. This suggests that if the distribution of common reed continues to expand in the central Platte River the availability of sandhill crane roosting habitat would likely be greatly reduced

    Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Sandhill Crane Habitat Management

    Invasive species often threaten native wildlife populations and strain the budgets of agencies charged with wildlife management. We demonstrate the potential of cost-effectiveness analysis to improve the efficiency and value of efforts to enhance sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) roosting habitat. We focus on the central Platte River in Nebraska (USA), a region of international ecological importance for migrating avian species including sandhill cranes. Cost-effectiveness analysis is a valuation process designed to compare alternative actions based on the cost of achieving a pre-determined objective. We estimated costs for removal of invasive vegetation using geographic information system simulations and calculated benefits as the increase in area of sandhill crane roosting habitat. We generated cost effectiveness values for removing invasive vegetation on 7 land parcels and for the entire central Platte River to compare the cost-effectiveness of management at specific sites and for the central Platte River landscape. Median cost effectiveness values for the 7 land parcels evaluated suggest that costs for creating 1 additional hectare of sandhill crane roosting habitat totaled US 1,595.Bycontrast,wefoundthatcreatinganadditionalhectareofsandhillcraneroostinghabitatcouldcostasmuchasUS1,595. By contrast, we found that creating an additional hectare of sandhill crane roosting habitat could cost asmuch as US 12,010 for some areas in the central Platte River, indicating substantial cost savings can be achieved by using a cost effectiveness analysis to target specific land parcels for management. Cost-effectiveness analysis, used in conjunction with geographic information systems, can provide decisionmakers with a new tool for identifying the most economically efficient allocation of resources to achieve habitat management goals

    Responses of predatory invertebrates to seeding density and plantspecies richness in experimental tallgrass prairie restorations

    In recent decades, agricultural producers and non-governmental organizations have restored thousandsof hectares of former cropland in the central United States with native grasses and forbs. However,the ability of these grassland restorations to attract predatory invertebrates has not been well docu-mented, even though predators provide an important ecosystem service to agricultural producers bynaturally regulating herbivores. This study assessed the effects of plant richness and seeding density onthe richness and abundance of surface-dwelling (ants, ground beetles, and spiders) and aboveground(ladybird beetles) predatory invertebrates. In the spring of 2006, twenty-four 55 m × 55 m-plots wereplanted to six replicates in each of four treatments: high richness (97 species typically planted by TheNature Conservancy), at low and high seeding densities, and low richness (15 species representing a typ-ical Natural Resources Conservation Service Conservation Reserve Program mix, CP25), at low and highseeding densities. Ants, ground beetles, and spiders were sampled using pitfall traps and ladybird beetleswere sampled using sweep netting in 2007–2009. The abundance of ants, ground beetles, and spidersshowed no response to seed mix richness or seeding density but there was a significant positive effect ofrichness on ladybird beetle abundance. Seeding density had a significant positive effect on ground beetleand spider species richness and Shannon–Weaver diversity. These results may be related to differencesin the plant species composition and relative amount of grass basal cover among the treatments ratherthan richness
