Direct Determination of DNA Twist-Stretch Coupling
The symmetries of the DNA double helix require a new term in its linear
response to stress: the coupling between twist and stretch. Recent experiments
with torsionally-constrained single molecules give the first direct measurement
of this important material parameter. We extract its value from a recent
experiment of Strick et al. [Science 271 (1996) 1835] and find rough agreement
with an independent experimental estimate recently given by Marko. We also
present a very simple microscopic theory predicting a value comparable to the
one observed.Comment: Plain TeX file; uses harvmac and epsf; .ps also available at

Senate called to order at 11:02 a.m. President Hunt presiding.
might be forgiven for the evil that clings to us and to be raised from the dead, that we might be justified before You for the life to come and might dwell in Your eternal peace. You have ordained the governing authorities to subdue evil for this life and to promote what is good, that there might be justice in our world and peace for this life. We pray for Your blessing upon this Session of the Nevada State Senate. Grant to its members such character, honor and sense of purpose, that what they do might be a means to justice, security and peace for our State and its citizens. We ask for all these things according to Your will, praying in the Name of the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN. Pledge of allegiance to the Flag. Senator Raggio moved that further reading of the Journal be dispensed with, and the President and Secretary be authorized to make the necessary corrections and additions. Motion carried
Stroke in Devon: knowledge was good, but action was poor.
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Effective implementation of early treatment strategies for stroke requires prompt admission to hospital. There are several reasons for delayed admission. Good awareness should facilitate early admission. We identified local targets for education. METHODS: Four groups, each of 40 people, completed questionnaires to determine their knowledge of stroke symptoms and risk factors, and the action they took or would take in the event of a stroke. The groups were: patients with a diagnosis of stroke or TIA (within 48 hrs of admission); patients at risk of stroke; the general population; and nurses. RESULTS: Forty per cent of stroke patients identified their stroke. Median time from onset of symptoms to seeking medical help was 30 minutes. Medical help was sought by the patient themselves in only 15% of cases. In 80% of cases the GP was called rather than an ambulance. Of the at risk group, 93% were able to list at least one symptom of acute stroke, as were 88% of the general population. An ambulance would be called by 73% of the at risk group in the event of a stroke. Patients with self reported risk factors for stroke were largely unaware of their increased risk. Only 7.5% of at risk patients acquired their stroke information from the medical profession. CONCLUSIONS: Public knowledge about stroke is good. However, stroke patients access acute services poorly. At risk patients have limited awareness of their increased risk. A campaign should target people at risk, reinforcing the diagnosis of stroke and access to medical services
Kinetics of exciton photoluminescence in type-II semiconductor superlattices
The exciton decay rate at a rough interface in type-II semiconductor
superlattices is investigated. It is shown that the possibility of
recombination of indirect excitons at a plane interface essentially affects
kinetics of the exciton photoluminescence at a rough interface. This happens
because of strong correlation between the exciton recombination at the plane
interface and at the roughness. Expressions that relate the parameters of the
luminescence kinetics with statistical characteristics of the rough interface
are obtained. The mean height and length of roughnesses in GaAs/AlAs
superlattices are estimated from the experimental data.Comment: 3 PostScript figure
Genome-wide analysis of 102,084 migraine cases identifies 123 risk loci and subtype-specific risk alleles
Genome-wide association analyses identify 123 susceptibility loci for migraine and implicate neurovascular mechanisms in its pathophysiology. Subtype analyses highlight risk loci specific for migraine with or without aura in addition to shared risk variants. Migraine affects over a billion individuals worldwide but its genetic underpinning remains largely unknown. Here, we performed a genome-wide association study of 102,084 migraine cases and 771,257 controls and identified 123 loci, of which 86 are previously unknown. These loci provide an opportunity to evaluate shared and distinct genetic components in the two main migraine subtypes: migraine with aura and migraine without aura. Stratification of the risk loci using 29,679 cases with subtype information indicated three risk variants that seem specific for migraine with aura (in HMOX2, CACNA1A and MPPED2), two that seem specific for migraine without aura (near SPINK2 and near FECH) and nine that increase susceptibility for migraine regardless of subtype. The new risk loci include genes encoding recent migraine-specific drug targets, namely calcitonin gene-related peptide (CALCA/CALCB) and serotonin 1F receptor (HTR1F). Overall, genomic annotations among migraine-associated variants were enriched in both vascular and central nervous system tissue/cell types, supporting unequivocally that neurovascular mechanisms underlie migraine pathophysiology.Peer reviewe
Automated identification of pathways from quantitative genetic interaction data
We present a novel Bayesian learning method that reconstructs large detailed gene networks from quantitative genetic interaction (GI) data. The method uses global reasoning to handle missing and ambiguous measurements, and provide confidence estimates for each prediction.Applied to a recent data set over genes relevant to protein folding, the learned networks reflect known biological pathways, including details such as pathway ordering and directionality of relationships. The reconstructed networks also suggest novel relationships, including the placement of SGT2 in the tail-anchored biogenesis pathway, a finding that we experimentally validated
under consideration, and begs leave to report the same back with the recommendation: Do pass.

Application of Newtonian physics to predict the speed of a gravity racer
Gravity racing can be studied using numerical solutions to the equations of motion derived from Newton’s second law. This allows students to explore the physics of gravity racing and to understand how design and course selection influences vehicle speed. Using Euler’s method, we have developed a spreadsheet application that can be used to predict the speed of a gravity powered vehicle. The application includes the effects of air and rolling
resistance. Examples of the use of the application for designing a gravity racer are presented and discussed. Predicted speeds are compared to the results of an official world record attempt
