Influence of the notch-sharpening technique on styrene-acrylonitrile fracture behavior
The Centre Catala del Plastic and Universidad Rey Juan Carlos laboratories joined forces to investigate the effect of the notch-sharpening technique on the fracture parameters of styrene-acrylonitrile. Contact notch-sharpening techniques, such as razor tapping, razor sliding, and razor broaching, and a noncontact procedure, femtolaser, were analyzed. The fracture values of the samples with notches sharpened via contact techniques were divided into two groups: one with pop-in and the other with no pop-in in the load-displacement records; this resulted in the lowest and highest fracture toughnesses, respectively. The fracture parameters of the specimens with notches sharpened via a femtolaser were between those of the samples with notches sharpened via contact procedures in which pop-in occurred and those in which it did not. To explain these results, the crack front of the nontested specimens after sharpening was investigated in depth, we identified the type of damage and measured its size and the crack tip radii. The morphology of the crack front was related to the fractographic study.Postprint (author's final draft
Influence of COVID on the Educational Use of Social Media by Students of Teaching Degrees
The situation caused by SARS-CoV-2 has resulted in the intensive use of technology in all fields, including education and interactions between students. This research seeks to identify changes in the way social media have been used for educational purposes by students of teaching degrees both before and after lockdown. Based on an online survey administered to a sample of 524 students from different Spanish universities in which it has been observed how their use has generally been very similar, although significant differences have been detected according to the kind of university. In this capacity, the use of social media for academic purposes has increased in universities offering traditional classroom based courses, while it has remained the same in virtual universities which, due to their particular idiosyncrasies, have not been directly affected
Communication strategies in the climate change debate on Facebook. Discourse on the Madrid Climate Summit (COP 25)
Climate change (CC) has become a topic of great interest in traditional and social media, two valuable sources of information that contribute to discussion on current affairs. Facebook is the social network with the most users in the world and also promotes mobilization, which makes it a platform of great interest for the study of CC communication strategies. The aim of this study is to analyse the content of the messages on CC posted on Facebook by prominent users: the relevance of the topic in the posts as a whole, objectives pursued, type of discourse and the emotions associated with messages. After validating a selection of 10 accounts (Greta Thunberg, Donald Trump, Scott Morrison, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Extinction Rebellion USA, Justin Trudeau, Bernie Sanders, United Nations, Extinction Rebellion UK and Jane Fonda), the methodology was based on content analysis applied to messages on CC (n = 599) posted on Facebook by the selected accounts between 1 November 2019 and 10 January 2020, the period covering the Madrid Climate Summit (COP 25, held in 2019). The results revealed different CC communication strategies. Regarding the presence of CC as a topic, we observed three different strategies: omission, simple mention and high presence. In terms of discourse, we noticed two different strategies: an emotional strategy that was more successful at generating interaction with others, and an analytical strategy that was generally more belligerent in its fight against CC
Currently exists an increasing interest to identify the possible reasons that could justify such a high persistence of wage differences between men and women. In this sense, there are many areas of activity in which discriminations are disappearing. However, the pay gap continues. There are alternative point of views on the reasons for this discrimination, but this paper aims to explore the possibility that these differences may be related (at least in part) to different attitudes and / or strategies in relation to the formation each individual has. Including within the concept "formation" the decision to study or not, the level of studies acquired, the continuous or non-regulated training or the labour insertion. To do so, three sources of information will be analyzed: two databases, one on the participation in the education of Spanish individuals and another on the labour insertion of university students. This is complemented by an exploration of awareness around the context of the pay gap, labour insertion or equality
Between 2010 and 2013, Latin America became indebt with six dollars for each dollar that had received as a donation for climate projects. New data (2013-2014) given by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), showed that this relation has decreased to 3.6 dollars of credit for each dollar that has been donated. However, the omission of the contributions of developing countries persists in the source of information, so the amplitude of the financing gap is still unknown, as well as who is assuming the bill for the mitigation and adaptation of the phenomenon. This article examines the financial climate flows to the region, between 2010 and 2013, and the resources for the REDD+ mechanism. The aim is to draw the prevailing governance model in the region and to establish recommendations vis-à-vis the new Protocol.
