    Performance Evaluation of Ingenious Crow Search Optimization Algorithm for Protein Structure Prediction

    Protein structure prediction is one of the important aspects while dealing with critical diseases. An early prediction of protein folding helps in clinical diagnosis. In recent years, applications of metaheuristic algorithms have been substantially increased due to the fact that this problem is computationally complex and time-consuming. Metaheuristics are proven to be an adequate tool for dealing with complex problems with higher computational efficiency than conventional tools. The work presented in this paper is the development and testing of the Ingenious Crow Search Algorithm (ICSA). First, the algorithm is tested on standard mathematical functions with known properties. Then, the application of newly developed ICSA is explored on protein structure prediction. The efficacy of this algorithm is tested on a bench of artificial proteins and real proteins of medium length. The comparative analysis of the optimization performance is carried out with some of the leading variants of the crow search algorithm (CSA). The statistical comparison of the results shows the supremacy of the ICSA for almost all protein sequences

    Inhibiting Lactate Dehydrogenase A Enhances the Cytotoxicity of the Mitochondria Accumulating Antioxidant, Mitoquinone, in Melanoma Cells

    Limited options exist for inhibitors targeted against melanoma tumors with mutation subtypes other than BRAF. We investigated the cytotoxic activity of mitoquinone (MitoQ), an antioxidant and ubiquinone derivative, on various human melanoma cell lines, alone or in combination with other agents to perturb cellular bioenergetics. This lipophilic cation crosses the cell membrane, enters and accumulates in the mitochondria where it can disrupt mitochondrial function at micromolar concentrations or act as an antioxidant to preserve membrane integrity at nanomolar concentrations. Consistent with previous studies, cells treated with 12.5 μM MitoQ show significantly reduced viability versus control treatments. Although all melanoma cells were susceptible to cytotoxicity induced by MitoQ, cells with wild-type BRAF were responsive to lower doses, compared to cells with activating mutations in BRAF. Mechanistically, the positively charged lipophilic moiety of the MitoQ induced a dose-dependent collapse of the mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm) and significantly reduced the mitochondrial ATP production and reduced oxygen consumption rate, suggesting mitochondrial dysfunction. We also combined MitoQ with a glycolytic lactate dehydrogenase A inhibitor (FX-11) and observed an enhanced reduction in viability, but not other therapies examined. To summarize, the data suggest that FX-11 enhances the cytotoxic effects of MitoQ in cells with wild-type BRAF

    A Family of Hybrid Stochastic Conjugate Gradient Algorithms for Local and Global Minimization Problems

    This paper contains two main parts, Part I and Part II, which discuss the local and global minimization problems, respectively. In Part I, a fresh conjugate gradient (CG) technique is suggested and then combined with a line-search technique to obtain a globally convergent algorithm. The finite difference approximations approach is used to compute the approximate values of the first derivative of the function f. The convergence analysis of the suggested method is established. The comparisons between the performance of the new CG method and the performance of four other CG methods demonstrate that the proposed CG method is promising and competitive for finding a local optimum point. In Part II, three formulas are designed by which a group of solutions are generated. This set of random formulas is hybridized with the globally convergent CG algorithm to obtain a hybrid stochastic conjugate gradient algorithm denoted by HSSZH. The HSSZH algorithm finds the approximate value of the global solution of a global optimization problem. Five combined stochastic conjugate gradient algorithms are constructed. The performance profiles are used to assess and compare the rendition of the family of hybrid stochastic conjugate gradient algorithms. The comparison results between our proposed HSSZH algorithm and four other hybrid stochastic conjugate gradient techniques demonstrate that the suggested HSSZH method is competitive with, and in all cases superior to, the four algorithms in terms of the efficiency, reliability and effectiveness to find the approximate solution of the global optimization problem that contains a non-convex function

    CONCOMITANT USE OF NON-STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDS) WITH WARFARIN

    Introduction: Oral anticoagulation with warfarin is the accepted technique for treatment and prophylaxis of thromboembolic diseases. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most broadly administered medications to control musculoskeletal pain or inflammation. besides to their antiplatelet work, NSAIDs can influence the pharmacologic activity of warfarin through their immediate interaction. High protein binding and the cytochrome P450 (CYP)- dependent clearance systems of NSAIDs can influence the serum levels of warfarin. Aim of work: In this review, we will discuss whether using warfarin with NSAID has any effect on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of both drugs. Methodology: We conducted this review using a comprehensive search of MEDLINE, PubMed, and EMBASE, January 1985, through February 2017. The following search terms were used: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug mechanism, warfarin mechanism, adverse effects of NSAID, adverse effect of warfarin, NSAID-warfarin interaction Conclusions: Co-administration of NSAIDs and Warfarin is a topic of debate. However, there are reasons for concern. Some NSAIDs alter hemostasis and, when combined with warfarin, may lead to an increase in bleeding time. There is also a risk of increased hepatic and renal toxicity which complicates things further. Balancing the pros and cons of this drug combination should be carefully done on a case to case basis to avoid any negative consequences.     The barriers, motives, perceptions, and attitudes toward research among radiology practitioners and interns in Saudi Arabia: a cross-sectional study

    BackgroundResearch and the use of evidence-based practices are imperative to the advancement of diagnostic imaging modalities. The aim of this study was to assess the perceptions and attitudes of radiology practitioners (i.e., Technicians, Technologists or Specialists, and Senior Specialists) and interns in King Abdulaziz Medical Cities (KAMCs), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, toward research, and to explore the various barriers and obstacles that hinder their research efforts.MethodsA cross-sectional descriptive investigation was carried out from December 2022 to March 2023 among 112-KAMCs’ radiology practitioners and interns, using previously developed and validated questionnaire comprised of five distinct sections, each serving a specific purpose, and with a non-probability convenient sampling technique. Descriptive statistics were generated for participants’ demographics, and chi-square and fisher’s exact tests were used to examine the association between participants’ demographics and their involvement in research.ResultsAmong the 137 KAMCs’ radiology practitioners and interns who were invited to participate, 112 responded and completed the questionnaire, resulting in an overall response rate of 81.75%. Radiology practitioners and interns from various medical imaging subspecialties were found to be involved in research to the extent of 83%, with nearly half (40.9%) of them have had publications, and 53.3% of these publications being either cross-sectional studies or retrospective clinical studies. A lack of time (66.1%), a lack of a professional supervisor support program (50.9%), and deficiency in research skills (45.5%) were common obstacles that may impede the participants’ ability to conduct research. The most common motives for participants to conduct research were the desire to improve their resumes (69.6%), get accepted into postgraduate radiology programs (58%), and improve their research skills (52.7%).ConclusionKAMCs’ radiology practitioners and interns have a positive attitude toward performing research. Despite the high percentage (83%) of those involved in research, the number of publications remains low. A crucial step to advancing the profession’s evidence base is engaging radiology practitioners and interns in research and encouraging radiology practitioner-led research. The study findings can serve as a valuable basis for designing developmental programs aimed at overcoming research obstacles among healthcare professionals in Saudi Arabia

    Adaptive power control aware depth routing in underwater sensor networks

    Underwater acoustic sensor network (UASN) refers to a procedure that promotes a broad spectrum of aquatic applications. UASNs can be practically applied in seismic checking, ocean mine identification, resource exploration, pollution checking, and disaster avoidance. UASN confronts many difficulties and issues, such as low bandwidth, node movements, propagation delay, 3D arrangement, energy limitation, and high-cost production and arrangement costs caused by antagonistic underwater situations. Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) are considered a major issue being encountered in energy management because of the limited battery power of their nodes. Moreover, the harsh underwater environment requires vendors to design and deploy energy-hungry devices to fulfil the communication requirements and maintain an acceptable quality of service. Moreover, increased transmission power levels result in higher channel interference, thereby increasing packet loss. Considering the facts mentioned above, this research presents a controlled transmission power-based sparsity-aware energy-efficient clustering in UWSNs. The contributions of this technique is threefold. First, it uses the adaptive power control mechanism to utilize the sensor nodes’ battery and reduce channel interference effectively. Second, thresholds are defined to ensure successful communication. Third, clustering can be implemented in dense areas to decrease the repetitive transmission that ultimately affects the energy consumption of nodes and interference significantly. Additionally, mobile sinks are deployed to gather information locally to achieve the previously mentioned benefits. The suggested protocol is meticulously examined through extensive simulations and is validated through comparison with other advanced UWSN strategies. Findings show that the suggested protocol outperforms other procedures in terms of network lifetime and packet delivery ratio
