Morphological Variation between Life and Death Gastropod Populations in the Nile Delta: A Pollution-Induced Evolution

    Get PDF
Wetland ecosystems of the Nile Delta face severe threats due to natural climatic changes and anthropogenic activities. Life and death assemblage comparisons can be implemented as a historical record to detect anthropogenic-induced environmental changes in the past few decades. A geometric morphometric approach was applied to quantify the pollution-induced morphological variation between life and death populations of the gastropod Melanoides tuberculata. The results indicated that life populations differ significantly from the death ones, where the first tend to be much smaller, more globular, and with a depressed aperture and whorl section. In addition, the phenetic diversity of the life populations was also decreased, and the allometric growth was shifted. These morphological changes in the life populations are well-known adaptations for reducing the cost of shell maintenance in polluted water. No distinct morphospace was found between life populations from different habitats, suggesting that habitats have no significant role in the current pollution-induced evolution. This work is funded by the Researchers Supporting Project number (RSP2023R455), King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Pleuropulmonary Blastoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
The case of 38-month-old boy is being reported who was brought to the pediatrics clinic with fever, cough, hemoptysis, and breathing difficulty. Imaging studies revealed a right lower chest mass. Lobectomy and histopathological examination revealed it to be predominantly solid pleuropulmonary blastoma type II. It is a rare pediatric pleuropulmonary tumor with aggressive behavior and tendency to spread to the brain. The case is being presented to make the general histopathologist aware of this rare entity and to highlight to the pediatric physicians/surgeons, radiologists, and histopathologists the fact that lung cysts in infants and young children should be evaluated seriously and sampled thoroughly to diagnose cases of type I pleuropulmonary blastoma which will progress over time to type II or type III tumors. Also the siblings and first degree relatives of the patient should be screened for associated pulmonary and extrapulmonary benign and malignant conditions

The Rise of Islamists in the Middle East and Chinese Interests in the Region

    No full text
The uprising in the Middle East is representing the beginning of a new era in the history of the region. The region has not been stable during most of the 20th century. The strategic position of the region has influenced its security. The Middle East has been part of most of the international conflicts whether directly or indirectly. During the Cold War, the Middle East has not suffered only from a division between Israel and the Arab Countries, but also between the Arab Countries themselves. The region has witnessed several times an intervention by major powers in the international system to protect their interests whether before or after the end of the Cold War. However, US supremacy after the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union was relatively short, as the World began a new era soon after the 9/11 attacks. The war on terrorism, the two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the financial crisis were some of the factors that ended US supremacy after the end of the Cold War and started the US decline. At the same time, the international system has started to shift from uni-polarity to multi-polarity with the rise of new regional powers most prominent among them is China. The rise of China will affect the international system and have its impact on the Middle East. Besides the changes of the international system, the Middle East has witnessed uprisings late 2010 and beginning of 2011 that led to the removal of the three regimes in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya. Although the new regimes have not been fully established, the rise of Islamists is one of the main consequences of such changes. Whether such changes in the Middle East can affect the interests of China in the region positively or negatively is the subject of this research. China’s interests in the region can be identified in three main categories: political and strategic interests; economic interests; and the effect of the developments in the region on Chinese territorial integrity in Xinjiang. To what extent the new environment will give the chance to China to extend its influence in the region beyond the traditional limits imposed on its interests?, and whether the new regimes in the region under the Islamists rule will seek a stronger relationship with China, to balance the influence of the US in the region, is the focus of this research. The research concludes that the rise of Islamists will not positively influence the political/strategic and economic interests of China in the Middle East at least in the short run and it will not negatively influence the sovereignty of China over Xinjiang

On some properties of ideal convergent double sequences in fuzzy normed spaces

Recently, Rashid et al. [Rashid, Mohammad HM and Kočinac, Ljubiša DR. Ideal convergence in 2–fuzzy 2–normed spaces, Hacettepe Journal of Mathematics and Statistics, 46(1):149–162, 2017] defined the notion of ideal convergence of single sequences in 2–fuzzy 2–normed linear spaces. The aim of this paper is to generalize this notion to the double sequences in such spaces. For the sake of generalizing we define some concepts that contribute basically to outcomes that we came up with and study some basic properties of these new definitions.Publisher's Versio

Present study examined the psychometric properties of the multiple leadership questionnaires (MLQ) in the health sector of Pakistan. Three hundred and fifteen medical doctors participated in the survey from all four regions of Sindh province.Using Smart-PLS 2.0 M3 software the data was analyzed. The results of the present study revealed that all the leadership styles including transformation, transactional and laissez-faire were highly relevant. The results of the study also demonstrated adequate level of internal consistency reliability, convergent validity and discriminant validity for each of the leadership styles.Based on the results, it is suggested that the MLQ instrument could be useful for measuring all the leadership styles in the health sector in Pakistan

Low-Level Laser Therapy for Diabetic Dermopathy in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: A Placebo-Controlled Pilot Study

    Get PDF
Introduction: Diabetic dermopathy (DD) is the most common cutaneous diabetes marker. Few studies have targeted DD using low-level laser therapy (LLLT). This pilot study aimed to evaluate the effect of LLLT on DD in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D).Methods: 12 patients with T2D (9 men, 3 women) and bilateral DD were enrolled in this placebo-controlled pilot study, and their ages ranged 50-65 years. One side was subjected to LLLT, three sessions weekly for one month (LLLT side), while the other side received the same treatment protocol with a laser device switched off as a placebo (placebo side). All patients were instructed to receive skincare for both sides, such as debridement, antibiotic creams, and dressings with betadine solution. The diameter of DD lesion and the cutaneous blood flow of the knees and ankles sites were assessed before and after one month at the end of the intervention. Results: At the baseline, no significant differences existed between LLLT and placebo sides in the DD and skin blood flow at the knee and ankle sites (P > 0.05). Post-intervention, a significant improvement occurred in DD diameter and the skin blood flow of the knee and ankle sites in the LLLT side (P < 0.05), while the placebo side showed a significant improvement only in DD diameter (P < 0.05) and non-significant changes in skin blood flow (P > 0.05). Comparing both sides, all measures significantly favored LLLT.Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that LLLT has beneficial effects on decreasing DD in T2D patients. Also, it was approved that the short term of LLLT is a safe modality to control DD in T2D patients

This paper is based on the English background of the students as the predictors for students English speaking skills at the secondary level at province of Sindh, Pakistan. A questionnaire was designed for students of grade-11, which was used to collect data from 60 male students of the public institutes in district Hyderabad, Pakistan. There were three independent variables used in this study: (X1) either students attended English language institute, (X2) number of years students were educated in English medium schools, and (X3) last class’s English score. The dependent variable was English speaking score (Y). Students’ speaking skills were assessed by a standardized rubric designed by language experts. There were four research questions formulated. Data was analyzed using linear and multiple regression, and t-test in SAS 9.2 (Statistical Analysis System). With ?=0.05, the result indicates that there is a significant relationship between student last class’s English score (N=60, M=50.45, SD=9.00) and their speaking scores (N=60, M=11.77, SD=3.21), r = 0.73, p<0.001. The number of years educated in English medium school (b = 0.22, t =2.05) and last class’s English score (b = 0.26, t = 8.26, p <.0001) were found significant predictors at R2 =0.57, F(2,57) =37.20, p<0.001. No statistical significance was indicated in students speaking score between those who attended English language institute (N=48, M= 12.04, SD= 3.43) and those who did not attend an English language institute (N=12, M= 10.67, SD= 1.83), t(58)= –1.34, p = 0.19. Interaction with students showed that most of the students do not speak English with fellow students because of shyness and lack of confidence. Get PDF
International audienceStudies on combustion of synthetic jet fuels is of growing importance because of their potential for addressing security of supply and air transportation sustainability. The oxidation of a 100% naphthenic cut (NC) that fits with typical chemical composition of biomass or coal liquefaction products, gas-to-liquid fuel (GtL), and a GtL-NC mixture were studied in a jet-stirred reactor under the same conditions (550-1150 K; 10 bar; equivalence ratio of 0.5, 1, and 2; initial fuel concentration of 1000 ppm). Surrogate model-fuels were designed based on fuel composition and chemical properties for simulating the kinetics of oxidation of these fuels. We used model-fuels consisting of mixtures of n-decane, decalin, tetralin, 2-methylheptane, 3-methylheptane, n-propyl cyclohexane, and n-propylbenzene. The proposed detailed chemical kinetic reaction mechanism was validated using the full experimental database obtained for the oxidation of pure GtL, GtL-NC mixture, and pure NC. Kinetic reaction pathway analyses and sensitivity analyses were used for interpreting the results
