    Seasonal Variations in Water Quality Parameters of the Mississippi River near St. Cloud, MN

    ABSTRACT - Water quality parameters were monitored in the Mississippi River and three tributaries (Harris Channel, Watab Creek, and Sauk River) from July 1980 to April 1981. Results were correlated with water temperature and discharge to assess seasonal changes. Effects of tributary inflow on the river were determined. Planktonic carbon was estimated with the firefly luciferin-luciferase system which measures adenosine triphosphate extracted from viable cells. Particulate organic matter, planktonic carbon, and percentage viable carbon were correlated with temperature (p ~ 0.6) while nitrate plus nitrite was inversely correlated with temperature and discharge. Only the Sauk River affected the water quality of the Mississippi River by adding elevated levels of dissolved electrolytes, total phosphorus, particulate organic matter, and planktonic carbon. Relatively low levels of planktonic carbon (155 μg/1) in the river indicated good water quality. Seasonal changes in water quality parameters of rivers must be considered in designing useful monitoring programs

    High Prevalence of Tuberculosis among Adults with Fever Admitted at a Tertiary Hospital in North-western Tanzania

    Tuberculosis is a leading cause of death in developing countries where HIV is endemic. This hospital based study was done to estimate the magnitude of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis and to determine predictors of tuberculosis among febrile adults admitted at Bugando Medical Centre (BMC), Mwanza, Tanzania. A total of 346 adults febrile patients admitted in medical wards were studied. Sputum for AFB microscopy and chest X-rays was used to diagnose tuberculosis. Clinical features were collected using standardized data collection tool. HIV testing and CD4 counts were determined. Data were analyzed using STATA version 11 software. Of 346 febrile adults patients 116 (33.5%) were diagnosed to have tuberculosis; of which 79 (68.1%) and 37 (31.9%) had pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, respectively. Smear negative PTB were more common in HIV positive than in HIV negative patients (50% vs. 18.5%, p=0.007). Extra-pulmonary tuberculosis was more common in HIV positive patients than pulmonary tuberculosis (86.4% vs. 13.6%), p=0.0001). On multivariate logistic regression analysis the predictors of tuberculosis were; age above 35 years (OR =2.38, p=0.007), cardinal symptoms (OR=37, p<0.0001), pleural effusion (OR=24, p=0.0001), and HIV status (OR =3.2, p=0.0001). Of 79 patients with PTB, 48 (60.7%) were AFB smear positive and 31(39.3%) were AFB smear negative. HIV patients with smear negative tuberculosis had significantly lower CD4 count than HIV patients with smear positive tuberculosis (63.5 cells/μl versus 111.5 cells/μl) [Mann- Whitney test p=0.0431]]. No different in mortality was observed between patients with TB and those without TB admitted in BMC medical wards (28.5% vs. 23.0%, p= 0.1318). Tuberculosis is the commonest cause of fever among adults patients admitted at BMC and is predicted by age above 35 years, positive HIV status, cardinal PTB symptoms, and pleural effusion. Routinely TB screening is highly recommended among adults with fever, cough, night sweating and wasting in countries where HIV is endemic.\u

    Quantum-inspired computational imaging

    Computational imaging combines measurement and computational methods with the aim of forming images even when the measurement conditions are weak, few in number, or highly indirect. The recent surge in quantum-inspired imaging sensors, together with a new wave of algorithms allowing on-chip, scalable and robust data processing, has induced an increase of activity with notable results in the domain of low-light flux imaging and sensing. We provide an overview of the major challenges encountered in low-illumination (e.g., ultrafast) imaging and how these problems have recently been addressed for imaging applications in extreme conditions.     Genetic Evidence for Two Species of Elephant in Africa

    Elephants from the tropical forests of Africa are morphologically distinct from savannah or bush elephants. Dart-biopsy samples from 195 free-ranging African elephants in 21 populations were examined for DNA sequence variation in four nuclear genes (1732 base pairs). Phylogenetic distinctions between African forest elephant and savannah elephant populations corresponded to 58% of the difference in the same genes between elephant genera Loxodonta (African) and Elephas (Asian). Large genetic distance, multiple genetically fixed nucleotide site differences, morphological and habitat distinctions, and extremely limited hybridization of gene flow between forest and savannah elephants support the recognition and conservation management of two African species: Loxodonta africana and Loxodonta cyclotis

    The results of the Trapped Radiation Effects Panel for the Space Environmental Effects on Materials Workshop are presented. The needs of the space community for new data regarding effects of the space environment on materials, including electronics are listed. A series of questions asked of each of the panels at the workshop are addressed. Areas of research which should be pursued to satisfy the requirements for better knowledge of the environment and better understanding of the effects of the energetic charged particle environment on new materials and advanced electronics technology are suggested

    Simulated Impacts of Climate Change on Surface Water Yields over the Sondu Basin in Kenya

    Potential impacts of climate change on surface water yields over the Sondu River basin in the western region of Kenya were analysed using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model with climate input data obtained from the fourth generation coupled Ocean-Atmosphere European Community Hamburg Model (ECHAM4) using the Providing Regional Climates for Impacts Studies (PRECIS) model. Daily time step regional climate scenarios at a spatial grid resolution of 0.44Ëš over the Eastern Africa region were matched to the Sondu river basin and used to calibrate and validate the SWAT model.Analysis of historical and projected rainfall over the basin strongly indicated that the climate of the area will significantly change with wetter climates being experienced by 2030 and beyond. Projected monthly rainfall distribution shows increasing trends in the relatively dry DJF and SON seasons while showing decreasing trends in the relatively wet MAM and JJA seasons. Potential changes in water yields resulting from climate change were computed by comparing simulated yields under climate change scenarios with those simulated under baseline conditions. There was evidence of substantial increases in water yields ranging between 88% and 110% of the baseline yields by 2030 and 2050 respectively. Although simulated water yields are subject to further verification from observed values, this study has provided useful information about potential changes in water yields as a result of climate change over the Sondu River basin and in similar basins in this region
