    Visco-hyperelastic model with damage for simulating cyclic thermoplastic elastomers behavior applied to an industrial component

    In this work a nonlinear phenomenological visco-hyperelastic model including damage consideration is developed to simulate the behavior of Santoprene 101-73 material. This type of elastomeric material is widely used in the automotive and aeronautic sectors, as it has multiple advantages. However, there are still challenges in properly analyzing the mechanical phenomena that these materials exhibit. To simulate this kind of material a lot of theories have been exposed, but none of them have been endorsed unanimously. In this paper, a new model is presented based on the literature, and on experimental data. The test samples were extracted from an air intake duct component of an automotive engine. Inelastic phenomena such as hyperelasticity, viscoelasticity and damage are considered singularly in this model, thus modifying and improving some relevant models found in the literature. Optimization algorithms were used to find out the model parameter values that lead to the best fit of the experimental curves from the tests.     A negative feedback between anthropogenic ozone pollution and enhanced ocean emissions of iodine

    Naturally emitted from the oceans, iodine compounds efficiently destroy atmospheric ozone and reduce its positive radiative forcing effects in the troposphere. Emissions of inorganic iodine have been experimentally shown to depend on the deposition to the oceans of tropospheric ozone, whose concentrations have significantly increased since 1850 as a result of human activities. A chemistry-climate model is used herein to quantify the current ocean emissions of inorganic iodine and assess the impact that the anthropogenic increase in tropospheric ozone has had on the natural cycle of iodine in the marine environment since pre-industrial times. Our results indicate that the human-driven enhancement of tropospheric ozone has doubled the oceanic inorganic iodine emissions following the reaction of ozone with iodide at the sea surface. The consequent build-up of atmospheric iodine, with maximum enhancements of up to 70% with respect to pre-industrial times in continental pollution outflow regions, has in turn accelerated the ozone chemical loss over the oceans with strong spatial patterns. We suggest that this ocean-atmosphere interaction represents a negative geochemical feedback loop by which current ocean emissions of iodine act as a natural buffer for ozone pollution and its radiative forcing in the global marine environment.Fil: Prados Roman, C..     Public Health Considerations for PM₁₀ in a High-Pollution Megacity: Influences of Atmospheric Condition and Land Coverage

Data was obtained from Red de Monitoreo de Calidad del Aire de Bogotá (RMCAB) and are available at http://201.245.192.252:81/Report/stationreport with the permission of RMCAB.[Abstract] This paper analyzes the PM₁₀ concentrations and influences of atmospheric condition (AC) and land coverage (LC) on a high-pollution megacity (Bogota, Colombia) from a public health viewpoint. Information of monitoring stations equipped with measuring devices for PM₁₀/temperature/solar-radiation/wind-speed were used. The research period lasted eight years (2007–2014). AC and LC were determined after comparing daily PM₁₀ concentrations (DPM₁₀) to reference limits published by the World Health Organization (WHO). ARIMA models for DPM₁₀ were also developed. The results indicated that urban sectors with lower atmospheric instability (AI) had a 2.85% increase in daily mortality (DM) in relation to sectors with greater AI. In these sectors of lower AI, impervious LC predominated, instead of vegetated LC. An ARIMA analysis revealed that a greater extent of impervious LC around a station led to a greater effect on previous days’ DPM₁₀ concentrations. Extreme PM₁₀ episodes persisted for up to two days. Extreme pollution episodes were probably also preceded by low mixing-layer heights (between 722–1085 m). The findings showed a 13.0% increase in WHO standard excesses (PE) for each 10 µg/m³ increase in DPM₁₀, and a 0.313% increase in DM for each 10% increase in PE. The observed average reduction of 14.8% in DPM₁₀ (−0.79% in DM) was probably due to 40% restriction of the traffic at peak hours.http://201.245.192.252:81/Report/stationrepor

    Cycle scheduling for in vitro fertilization with oral contraceptive pills versus oral estradiol valerate: a randomized, controlled trial

    BACKGROUND: Both oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) and estradiol (E(2)) valerate have been used to schedule gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles and, consequently, laboratory activities. However, there are no studies comparing treatment outcomes directly between these two pretreatment methods. This randomized controlled trial was aimed at finding differences in ongoing pregnancy rates between GnRH antagonist IVF cycles scheduled with OCPs or E(2) valerate. METHODS: Between January and May 2012, one hundred consecutive patients (nonobese, regularly cycling women 18–38 years with normal day 3 hormone levels and <3 previous IVF/ICSI attempts) undergoing IVF with the GnRH antagonist protocol were randomized to either the OCP or E(2) pretreatment arms, with no restrictions such as blocking or stratification. Authors involved in data collection and analysis were blinded to group assignment. Fifty patients received OCP (30 μg ethinyl E(2)/150 μg levonorgestrel) for 12–16 days from day 1 or 2, and stimulation was started 5 days after stopping OCP. Similarly, 50 patients received 4 mg/day oral E(2) valerate from day 20 for 5–12 days, until the day before starting stimulation. RESULTS: Pretreatment with OCP (mean±SD, 14.5±1.7 days) was significantly longer than with E(2) (7.8±1.9 days). Stimulation and embryological characteristics were similar. Ongoing pregnancy rates (46.0% vs. 44.0%; risk difference, –2.0% [95% CI –21.2% to 17.3%]), as well as implantation (43.5% vs. 47.4%), clinical pregnancy (50.0% vs. 48.0%), clinical miscarriage (7.1% vs. 7.7%), and live birth (42.0% vs. 40.0%) rates were comparable between groups. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to directly compare these two methods of cycle scheduling in GnRH antagonist cycles. Our results fail to show statistically significant differences in ongoing pregnancy rates between pretreatment with OCP and E(2) for IVF with the GnRH antagonist protocol. Although the study is limited by its sample size, our results may contribute to a future meta-analysis. An interesting future direction would be to extend our study to women with decreased ovarian reserve, as these are the patients in whom an increase in oocyte yield—due to the hypothetical beneficial effect of steroid pretreatment on follicular synchronization—could more easily be demonstrated.     Reducción de los tiempos de observación en la evaluación del observación en la evaluación del comportamiento de conejas en producción. Análisis metodológico.

    El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar diferentes técnicas de muestreo que redujeran el tiempo total de observación necesario para estimar el comportamiento de conejas alojadas en dos tipos de jaulas (convencionales vs. enriquecidas) y en dos estados fisiológicos distintos (gestantes vs. lactantes). Para ello, se compararon grabaciones completas de 24 h (método control de referencia) con estimaciones obtenidas a partir de grabaciones de diferente duración y frecuencia (métodos regular corto y regular largo y métodos irregulares de 6h y de 8h). A partir de los resultados obtenidos se observa que los métodos regulares se ajustaron mejor al método de referencia de 24h que los irregulares. Desde un punto de vista práctico el método regular corto sería el ideal, al reducir considerablemente el número total de horas de observación y análisi

    Salt Diapirs, Salt Brine Seeps, Pockmarks and Surficial Sediment Creep and Slides in the Canary Channel of NW Africa

    Circular to elliptical mounds in the Canary Channel with reliefs of 75 to 375 m and diameters of 4 to 8 km partially surrounded by moats with reliefs of 25 to 75 m, were formed by piercement of the seafloor by Mesozoic evaporites. Several long gullies, <1 km wide, with abrupt terminations and pockmarks associated with these mounds were probably eroded by dense brine and hydrocarbon seeps. The salt brines that eroded the gullies were formed where salt diapirs intersect the seafloor, or in the subsurface by circulating ground water heated by igneous activity along the Canary Ridge. If the brines originated in the subsurface they reached the seafloor along faults. Displacement of the surficial sediments by sliding and creep is probably the result of the expulsion of hydrocarbons and/or vertical motion of the Mesozoic evaporites.     Evidence for a Role of Endocannabinoids, Astrocytes and p38 Phosphorylation in the Resolution of Postoperative Pain

    An alarming portion of patients develop persistent or chronic pain following surgical procedures, but the mechanisms underlying the transition from acute to chronic pain states are not fully understood. In general, endocannabinoids (ECBs) inhibit nociceptive processing by stimulating cannabinoid receptors type 1 (CB(1)) and type 2 (CB(2)). We have previously shown that intrathecal administration of a CB(2) receptor agonist reverses both surgical incision-induced behavioral hypersensitivity and associated over-expression of spinal glial markers. We therefore hypothesized that endocannabinoid signaling promotes the resolution of acute postoperative pain by modulating pro-inflammatory signaling in spinal cord glial cells.To test this hypothesis, rats receiving paw incision surgery were used as a model of acute postoperative pain that spontaneously resolves. We first characterized the concentration of ECBs and localization of CB(1) and CB(2) receptors in the spinal cord following paw incision. We then administered concomitant CB(1) and CB(2) receptor antagonists/inverse agonists (AM281 and AM630, 1 mg x kg(-1) each, i.p.) during the acute phase of paw incision-induced mechanical allodynia and evaluated the expression of glial cell markers and phosphorylated p38 (a MAPK associated with inflammation) in the lumbar dorsal horn. Dual blockade of CB(1) and CB(2) receptor signaling prevented the resolution of postoperative allodynia and resulted in persistent over-expression of spinal Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP, an astrocytic marker) and phospho-p38 in astrocytes. We provide evidence for the functional significance of these astrocytic changes by demonstrating that intrathecal administration of propentofylline (50 microg, i.t.) attenuated both persistent behavioral hypersensitivity and over-expression of GFAP and phospho-p38 in antagonist-treated animals.Our results demonstrate that endocannabinoid signaling via CB(1) and CB(2) receptors is necessary for the resolution of paw incision-induced behavioral hypersensitivity and for the limitation of pro-inflammatory signaling in astrocytes following surgical insult. Our findings suggest that therapeutic strategies designed to enhance endocannabinoid signaling may prevent patients from developing persistent or chronic pain states following surgery

    Efecto del tipo de jaula sobre el comportamiento de conejas

    El objetivo de este ensayo fue evaluar el efecto del tipo de jaula (convencional vs. enriquecida) y el estado fisiológico de las conejas (gestación vs. lactación) sobre su comportamiento. Se realizaron grabaciones de 12 conejas multíparas durante 24 h en dos momentos distintos. Los comportamientos observados se clasificaron en tres grupos independientes (localización, locomoción y acciones). Se observó una predominancia clara por el uso del reposapatas (principalmente en la fase de lactación), pero este tiempo disminuyó significativamente en jaulas enriquecidas debido al uso de la plataforma (67,1 vs. 48,2%; Pmenor que0,05). Las conejas permanecieron tumbadas y sentadas el 78,4 y 20,7% del día, respectivamente, sin tener efecto ni el tipo de jaula ni el estado fisiológico. Las conejas se ponían de pie únicamente para comer u oler las heces retenidas sobre la plataforma. Las conejas se mostraron más nerviosas en la fase de lactación tratando de huir de los gazapos, siendo esta huida exitosa cuando las conejas tenían la posibilidad de utilizar la plataforma. Las conejas gestantes estuvieron significativamente más tiempo que las lactantes acicalándose, mordiendo barrotes e interaccionando con las vecinas (Pmenor que0,01; 0,05 y 0,05, respectivamente). Las conejas lactantes dedicaron más tiempo a beber (Pmenor que0,05) que las gestantes. De este trabajo se desprende que el aumento del espacio disponible con la colocación de una plataforma elevada podría ser una buena alternativa para la mejora del bienestar de las conejas, sobre todo en la fase final de la lactación, aunque la retención de heces sobre la plataforma y las deyecciones pueden ocasionar problemas de higiene

    Modelling the Inorganic Bromine Partitioning in the Tropical Tropopause over the Pacific Ocean

    The stratospheric inorganic bromine burden (Bry) arising from the degradation of brominated very short-lived organic substances (VSL org ), and its partitioning between reactive and reservoir species, is needed for a comprehensive assessment of the ozone depletion potential of brominated trace gases. Here we present modelled inorganic bromine abundances over the Pacific tropical tropopause based on aircraft observations of VSL org of two campaigns of the Airborne Tropical TRopopause EXperiment (ATTREX 2013 carried out over eastern Pacific and ATTREX 2014 carried out over the western Pacific) and chemistry-climate simulations (along ATTREX flight tracks) using the specific meteorology prevailing. Using the Community Atmosphere Model with Chemistry (CAM-Chem), we model that BrO and Br are the daytime dominant species. Integrated across all ATTREX flights BrO represents ~ 43 % and 48 % of daytime Bry abundance at 17 km over the Western and Eastern Pacific, respectively. The results also show zones where Br/BrO >1 depending on the solar zenith angle (SZA), ozone concentration and temperature. On the other hand, BrCl and BrONO 2 were found to be the dominant night-time species with ~ 61% and 56 % of abundance at 17 km over the Western and Eastern Pacific, respectively. The western-to-eastern differences in the partitioning of inorganic bromine are explained by different abundances of ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) , and total inorganic chlorine (Cly).Fil: Navarro, María A..     La asociación entre el envejecimiento de la población y la incidencia del cáncer oral y de faringe en el continente americano

    Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the association between aging of population and incidence of oral cavity and pharynx cancer at the country level in the American continent. Methods: An ecological study at the country level. Countries’ data for oral cavity and pharynx cancer incidence comes from the International Agency for Cancer Research (GLOBOCAN 2002). Twenty eight countries were included from North America, Central America, and South America. The dependent variables were the countries’ oral cavity and pharynx cancer incidence rates (per 100,000/ year) by sex, overall and age-specific groups, 0-64 (younger population) and >65 (older population), and the main independent variable was the countries’ aging population (% of persons 65 years and older). Other variables considered were per-capita gross national income and prevalence of smoking by sex at the country level. Results: Overall countries’ level of oral cavity and pharynx cancer incidence rates were strongly correlated with the countries’ aging population (p<0.01). In adjusted regression analyses, the countries’ aging population was significantly associated with overall oral cavity and pharynx cancer incidence rates for male (p<0.0001, p=0.0003) and female (p=0.0025, p=0.0134) populations. Conclusion: Countries’ aging population was associated with increased countries’ oral cavity and pharynx cancer incidence rates in the American continent. Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la asociación entre envejecimiento de la población y la incidencia de cáncer de la cavidad oral y de faringe en los países del continente americano. Métodos: Estudio ecológico usando datos de cada país. Los datos por país para cáncer oral y faringe provienen de la Agencia Internacional de Investigación sobre el Cáncer (GLOBOCAN 2002). Veintiocho países de América del Norte, América Central y América del Sur, fueron incluidos. Las variables dependientes fueron las tasas de incidencia de cáncer de cavidad oral y de faringe (por 100.000/año) a nivel de cada país por sexo, en total y por grupos de edades 0-64 años y 65+ años, y la variable independiente principal fue el envejecimiento de la población a nivel del país (% de personas mayores de 65+ años). Otras variables consideradas fueron el ingreso nacional bruto per cápita y la prevalencia del fumar por sexo a nivel de cada país. Resultados: Las tasas globales de incidencia del cáncer de la cavidad oral y de faringe de los países fueron correlacionadas significativamente con los porcentajes de envejecimiento poblacional de los países (p<0.01). En análisis de regresión linear ajustados, el envejecimiento poblacional de los países estuvo asociado significantemente con las tasas de incidencia globales del cáncer de la cavidad oral y de faringe para poblaciones masculinas (p<0.0001, p=0.0003) y femeninas (p=0.0025, p=0.0134). Conclusión: El envejecimiento de la población a nivel de los países se asoció con mayores tasas de incidencia de cáncer de la cavidad oral y de faringe en el continente americano
