Other models consider the dynamic evolution of the plastic zone with time and the description is based on computer simulations where the plastic zone is consider as formed by discrete dislocations in-non equilibrium. This dynamics is described by a power relation between velocity, total stress and temperature. In this work, numerical simulations were performed considering an infinite crack loaded under fixed loading rates according to Hirsch et al (HRS) model. The dislocations are emitted by a Frank-Read source positioned at a fixed distance ahead of the crack tip and in a plane containing the crack front. From the simulations, the plastic zone size, the dislocation free zone, the total number and the distribution of dislocations, the elastic stress and the effetive stress intensity factor were calculated. The results from numerical simulations according to Hirsch et al (HRS) and Chen & Kitaoka (CK) models for mode I loading are compared with the dynamic analytic model of this work (according to HRS model) and to static Chen & Kitaoka (CK) model. For mode III, the Hirsch et al (HRS) simulations are compared with Chang & Ohr (CO) and Majumdar & Burns (MB) static analytic models, as the dynamic analytic model develop in this work (according to HRS model). The results show excellent agreement when compared with numerical simulations. Keywords: Crack; Plastic zone; Dislocations; Analytical models
Propriedades nanomecânicas do silicato de cálcio hidratado de síntese
Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), the main product from portland cement hydration, has a great influence on most physical and mechanical properties of cement based materials. However, until now, there are no structural models relating chemical composition, micro and nanostructure with its physical-chemical and mechanical properties. In this study, we used the technique of instrumented indentation to evaluate the nanomechanical properties of two synthetic C-S-H with different Ca/Si ratio. The results showed that it is possible to estimate with a good ccuracy the elastic modulus and hardness using only 16 indented points, with several cycles of loading for each indentation, and that the intensity of the indentation load is not significant. It was also shown that the C-S-H elastic modulus increases when the Ca/Si ratio decreases, confirming the calculations based on field forces methods of Manzano et al. (2009). However it was found that micro and nanoporosity have a significant effect on the result. Finally, a discussion about some of the parameters to be controlled to modify the mechanical characteristics of the C-S-H gel produced by the portland cement hydration is presented.O silicato de cálcio hidratado (C-S-H), principal fase proveniente da hidratação do cimento Portland, tem grande influência na maioria das propriedades físicas e mecânicas dos materiais cimentícios.
Depth-Sensing Indentation on REBa2Cu3O(7-\delta) Single Crystals obtained from Xenotime Mineral
A natural mixture of heavy rare earths oxides extracted from xenotime mineral
have been used to prepare large single crystals of high-temperature
REBa2Cu3O(7-\delta) superconductor grown using the CuO-BaO self-flux method.
Its mechanical properties along the ab-plane were characterized using
instrumented indentation. Hardness and elastic modulus were obtained by the
Oliver and Pharr method and corresponds to 7.4 \pm 0.2 GPa and in range 135-175
GPa at small depths, respectively. Increasing the load promotes the nucleation
of lateral cracks that causes a decrease in hardness and the measured elastic
modulus by instrumented indentation at higher loads. The indentation fracture
toughness was estimated by measuring the radial crack length from cube-corner
indentations at various loads and was 0.8 \pm 0.2 MPa.m1/2. The observed slip
systems of REBa2Cu3O(7-\delta) single crystals were [100](001) and [010](001),
the same as for YBa2Cu3O(7-\delta) single crystals. The initial stages of
deformation and fracture in the indentation process were investigated. The
hardness and elastic modulus were not strongly modified by the crystallographic
orientation in the ab-plane. This was interpreted in terms of the resolved
shear stresses in the active slip systems. Evidence of cracking along the {100}
and {110} planes on the ab-plane was observed. As a conclusion, the mechanical
properties of REBa2Cu3O(7-\delta) single crystals prepared from xenotime are
equivalent to those of YBa2Cu3O(7-\delta) single crystals produced by
conventional rare earths oxides.Comment: The paper will appear in Volume 42 (2012) of the Brazilian Journal of

Design parameters and associated quantitative damage analyses of an asphalt concrete airfield runway
Design parameters and evaluation of associated mechanical behavior of an airfield runway asphalt concrete pavement structure is reported. French aeronautical design methodology was taken as reference. Field and laboratory procedures were employed to determine constituent materials of the designed structure. Stationary linear elastic and dynamic viscoelastic numerical damage analyses were developed and compared, using computerized tools based on 3D Finite Element Methods. Results indicate that viscoelastic analyses provide more discriminating assessment of damage phenomena along the depth of pavement layers, and that landing gear geometric characteristics are more diagnostic than aircraft gross weight for cumulative damage propagation
