    Elastocaloric Effect in Graphene Kirigami

    Kirigami, a traditional Japanese art of paper-cutting, has recently been explored for its elastocaloric effect (ECE) in kirigami-based materials (KMs), where applying strain induces temperature changes. In this study, we investigate the ECE in a nanoscale graphene kirigami (GK) monolayer, representing the thinnest possible KM, to better understand this phenomenon. Through molecular dynamics simulations, we analyze the temperature change and coefficient of performance (COP) of the nanoscale GK architecture. Our findings reveal that while GKs lack the intricate temperature changes observed in macroscopic KMs, they exhibit a substantial temperature change of approximately 9.32 K (23 times higher than that of macroscopic KMs, which is about 0.4K) for heating and -3.50 K for cooling. Additionally, they demonstrate reasonable COP values of approximately 1.57 and 0.62, respectively. It is noteworthy that the one-atom-thick graphene configuration prevents the occurrence of the complex temperature distribution observed in macroscopic KMs.Comment: 14 pages, 06 figures, and 01 tabl

    Measurement of the sensitivity function in time-domain atomic interferometer

Meas.We present here an analysis of the sensitivity of a time-domain atomic interferometer to the phase noise of the lasers used to manipulate the atomic wave-packets. The sensitivity function is calculated in the case of a three pulse Mach-Zehnder interferometer, which is the configuration of the two inertial sensors we are building at BNM-SYRTE. We successfully compare this calculation to experimental measurements. The sensitivity of the interferometer is limited by the phase noise of the lasers, as well as by residual vibrations. We evaluate the performance that could be obtained with state of the art quartz oscillators, as well as the impact of the residual phase noise of the phase-lock loop.     INTERVENÇÃO DE ENFERMAGEM NO ESTRESSE DO CUIDADOR FAMILIAR DO IDOSO COM DEPENDÊNCIA: ESTUDO PILOTO

    Objetivo: avaliar a eficácia de uma intervenção de enfermagem estruturada com base num programa psicoeducativo de gestão do estresse sobre estressores primários (sobrecarga), recursos (coping) e resultados (bem-estar emocional) do cuidador, e avaliação realizada pelos cuidadores e pelos enfermeiros sobre a ajuda da intervenção e sobre o material de apoio ao programa. Método: estudo piloto com 13 cuidadores de idosos em Portugal durante 5 semanas. Realizaram-se entrevistas para avaliar a intervenção e o material de apoio. Resultados: depois da intervenção, houve melhoria no coping, no bem-estar e na sobrecarga com diferença estatisticamente significativa na sobrecarga; dificuldades com a implementação da intervenção e uso do material de apoio. Conclusão: os cuidadores familiares revelaram que a intervenção ajudou-os na aprendizagem de novas estratégias de coping. Por parte dos enfermeiros, a intervenção ajudou-os a conhecer as dificuldades do cuidador, facilitando a abordagem holística do cuidado centrado no cuidador e no idoso.Descritores: Intervenção de enfermagem no domicílio.     obstacles to the implementation of Portugal's Dementia Strategy

The present publication was funded by Fundação Ciência e Tecnologia, IP national support through CHRC (UIDP/04923/2020).BACKGROUND: Portugal has a Dementia Strategy that endorses care coordination in the community, but the strategy is not implemented despite there being a network of multidisciplinary primary care clinics that could support it. Recent research into barriers to dementia management in primary care has focused essentially on general practitioners' (GPs) factors and perspectives. A comprehensive triangulated view on the barriers to dementia management emphasising teamwork is missing. AIM: To explore the barriers to the implementation of the Portuguese Dementia Strategy by primary care teams, from the perspectives of service users and professionals. METHODS: Purposive sampling was used to recruit 10 GPs, 8 practice nurses, 4 social workers, 8 people with dementia and 10 family carers from 6 practices in different social contexts within the Lisbon metropolitan area. The analytical framework combined codes derived from the transcripts with codes from the available literature. Themes focused on the access to professionals/community services, care coordination within healthcare teams, and between health and community services. FINDINGS: Several system barriers were identified (undefined roles/coordination within teams, time constraints, insufficient signposting to community services) along with individual barriers (limited competence in dementia, unrecognised autonomy, limited views on social health and quality of life (QoL)), hindering users access to dementia services. CONCLUSION: Enhanced competence in dementia, and nurse-led systematic care of people with dementia and their carers, are necessary. They can be effective in improving the QoL in dementia, but only if associated with better community support.publishersversionpublishe

    Liver proteomics unravel the metabolic pathways related to feed efficiency in beef cattle

    Improving nutrient utilization efficiency is essential for livestock, given the current scenario of increasing demand for animal protein and sustainable resource use. In this context, understanding the biology of feed efficiency (FE) in beef cattle allows the development of markers for identification and selection of best animals for animal production. Thus, 98 young Nellore bulls were evaluated for FE and at the end of the experiment liver samples from six High Feed Efficient (HFE) and six Low Feed Efficient (LFE) animals were collected for protein extraction, digestion and analysis by HPLC-MS/MS. Data were analyzed for differential abundant proteins (DAPs), protein networks, and functional enrichment. Serum endotoxin was also quantified. We found 42 DAPs and 3 protein networks significantly related to FE. The main pathways associated with FE were: microbial metabolism; biosynthesis of fatty acids, amino acids and vitamins; glycolysis/gluconeogenesis; xenobiotic metabolism and; antigen processing and presentation. Serum endotoxins were significantly higher in LFE animals supporting the results.     Assisted Reproductive Techniques on South American Wild Mammals

    For South American wild mammals, assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs) have been established in accordance with the procedures used for domestic mammals. However, often, it is not possible to infer the experimental conditions from one species to another. In general, the use of these ARTs aims the conservation of the animal genetic material, using gamete manipulation, embryo technology by in vivo or in vitro methods, and cloning. In all animals, the previous knowledge of reproductive physiology becomes the starting point for the use of ARTs in the expansion of all species of interest. In this sense, the purpose of this chapter is to develop an approach of theoretical, technical, and applied aspects of the ARTs in South American wild mammals, with emphasis on the state-of-the-art and its progress and perspectives

    Optimal design of THEDES based on Perillyl Alcohol and Ibuprofen

    Therapeutic deep eutectic systems (THEDES) have dramatically expanded their popularity in the pharmaceutical field due to their ability to increase active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) bioavailability. However, their biological performance has not yet been carefully scrutinized. Herein, THEDES based on the binary mixture of perillyl alcohol (POH) and ibuprofen (IBU) were prepared using different molar ratios. Our comprehensive strategy includes the characterization of their thermal and structural behavior to identify the molar ratios that successfully form deep eutectic systems. The in vitro solubility of the different systems prepared has demonstrated that, unlike other reported examples, the presence of the terpene did not affect the solubility of the anti-inflammatory agent in a physiological simulated media. The biological performance of the systems was studied in terms of their antimicrobial activity against a wide panel of microorganisms. The examined THEDES showed relevant antimicrobial activity against all tested microbial strains, with the exception of P. aeruginosa. A synergistic effect from the combination of POH and IBU as a eutectic system was verified. Furthermore, the cytotoxic profile of these eutectic systems towards colorectal cancer (CRC) in vitro cell models was also evaluated. The results provide the indication that the cell viability varies in a dose-dependent manner, with a selective THEDES action towards CRC cells. With tunable bioactivities in a ratio-dependent manner, THEDES enhanced the antimicrobial and anticancer properties, representing a possible alternative to conventional therapies.
