Storied Realities: A Case Study of Homelessness, Housing Policy, and Gender in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory

    Get PDF
Homelessness, as an inherently gendered phenomenon, places women who experience it in a doubly marginal position: not only are people experiencing homelessness often rendered “silent”, but the form women’s homelessness takes is often “hidden”. This thesis explores the intersecting topics of homelessness, housing policy, and gender in Whitehorse, Yukon, highlighting the role of lived experience, narrative, and sharing stories in creating more effective and inclusive public policy. Through both critical feminist analysis and dialogic storytelling, this thesis considers the potential utility of narrative and ethnographic method in creating policy, the visibility of women who experience homelessness in broader political and social discourse, and “Canada’s North” as a setting for innovative approaches to policymaking. Through interviews with people involved in the policymaking process in Whitehorse and participant observation in various service provision settings, this thesis calls for more meaningful engagement and collaboration in policy creation with women who experience homelessness

Relaxation of Radiation Effects in Polymers

    Get PDF
Radiation can create atomic-scale defect states in polymers, leading to changes in their optical, electrical and mechanical properties. Recent studies of polymers have shown that these defect states are sensitive to oxygen or water exposure. It is believed that oxygen cause the number of defect states to decrease and the polymers to revert to their original states. However, the time scale of this regression is not known. This experiment quantified the time that it takes five polymers to recover and the extent of said recovery; polypropylene (PP), low density polyethylene (LDPE), fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), polymide (PI), and poly ether ether ketone (PEEK). In order to study the regression optical transmission data were taken using a StellarNet UV/VIS Spectrometer. Optical data were collected at different intervals of time and then compared in order to quantify the time frame of the regression. Failure to account for this time-dependent recovery in radiation studies may result in inaccurate results and has called into question previous studies involving radiation effects in polymers where exposure times were not recorded

Purpose: To describe and compare the content of instruments that assess environmental factors using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, CINAHL and PEDro databases was conducted using a pre-determined search strategy. The identified instruments were screened independently by two investigators, and meaningful concepts were linked to the most precise ICF category according to published linking rules. Results: Six instruments were included, containing 526 meaningful concepts. Instruments had between 20% and 98% of items linked to categories in Chapter 1. The highest percentage of items from one instrument linked to categories in Chapters 2–5 varied between 9% and 50%. The presence or absence of environmental factors in a specific context is assessed in 3 instruments, while the other 3 assess the intensity of the impact of environmental factors. Discussion: Instruments differ in their content, type of assessment, and have several items linked to the same ICF category. Most instruments primarily assess products and technology (Chapter 1), highlighting the need to deepen the discussion on the theory that supports the measurement of environmental factors. This discussion should be thorough and lead to the development of methodologies and new tools that capture the underlying concepts of the ICF

Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, February 2006.Includes bibliographical references. An experimental study was conducted to determine the accuracy of current press fit theory when applied to press fit design. Brass and nylon hex samples were press fitted with hardened steel dowel pins. Press fit force and torque required to induce slipping were measured experimentally. Sample dimensions and material properties were utilized to predict expected force and torque levels, which were then measured experimentally. Brass press fit forces proved difficult to predict due to plowing effects in tight interference press fits where material yielding was observed. However, once vertical force was removed, torque was applied to each sample. The observed torque values matched press fit theory well suggesting that the interface pressure of the press fit can be accurately predicted by theory. The brass torque samples matched theory well once material yield conditions were taken into account. The creep sensitivity of the nylon samples made predictions over the testing period unreliable. Results show the need for further testing with specific attention to precision in sample machining and measurements. Other considerations include press fit interface roughness and plowing effects during press fitting.by Alexandra T. Nelson.S.B

Navigating Unmountable Media with the Digital Forensics XML File System

Some computer storage is non-navigable by current general-purpose computers. This could be because of obsolete interface software, or a more specialized storage system lacking widespread support. These storage systems may contain artifacts of great cultural, historical, or technical significance, but implementing compatible interfaces that are fully navigable may be beyond available resources. We developed the DFXML File System (DFXMLFS) to enable navigation of arbitrary storage systems that fulfill a minimum feature set of the POSIX file system standard. Our approach advocates for a two-step workflow that separates parsing the storage’s file system structures from navigating the storage like a contemporary file system, including file contents. The parse extracts essential file system metadata, serializing to Digital Forensics XML for later consumption as a read-only file system

ABSTRACT - Aim: To examine the association between self-reported physical activity and self-reported screen based time. Materials and methods: 969 high school students filled in a questionnaire on physical activity and screen based activities. Correlation analysis between time spent in moderate/vigorous physical activities and time spent in screen based activities were performed. Results: No association was found between physical activity and time spent watching TV, playing or using computers. A low correlation was found between time using mobile phones and time spent performing moderate physical activities (r = 0.09, p < 0.05), and vigorous physical activities (r = 0.13, p < 0.05). Conclusions: These findings suggest that screen time is not displacing physical activity.RESUMO - Objetivos: Explorar a associação entre o nível de atividade física e o uso de dispositivos eletrónicos.
