    Response of the Sea Louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis Infestation Levels on Juvenile Wild Pink, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, and Chum, O. keta, Salmon to Arrival of Parasitized Wild Adult Pink Salmon

    Recent recurring infestations of Sea Lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, on juvenile Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) and subsequent annual declines of these stocks have made it imperative to identify the source of Sea Lice. While several studies now identify farm salmon populations as sources of Sea Louse larvae, it is unclear to what extent wild salmonid hosts also contribute Sea Lice. We measured Sea Louse numbers on adult Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) migrating inshore. We also measured Sea Louse numbers on wild juvenile Pink and Chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) migrating to sea before the adults returned, and as the two age cohorts mingled. Adult Pink Salmon carried an average of 9.89 (SE 0.90) gravid lice per fish, and thus were capable of infecting the adjacent juveniles. Salinity and temperature remained favourable to Sea Louse reproduction throughout the study. However, all accepted measures of Sea Louse infestation failed to show significant increase on the juvenile salmon, either in overall abundance of Sea Lice or of the initial infective-stage juvenile lice, while the adult wild salmon were present in the study area. This study suggests that even during periods of peak interaction, wild adult salmon are not the primary source of the recent and unprecedented infestations of Sea Lice on juvenile Pacific Pink and Chum salmon in the inshore waters of British Columbia

    First Report of a Sea Louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, Infestation on Juvenile Pink Salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, in Nearshore Habitat

    High infestation rates of the Sea Louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) have been reported on juvenile salmonids in Europe since 1989; however, this species has not been reported on juvenile Pacific salmonids until now. Magnitude of Sea Lice infestation was examined in 2001 on juvenile Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) migrating through a British Columbia archipelago. On average, the 751 juvenile Pink Salmon sampled weighed 2.25 g (± 0.039 SE), were infected with 11.3 (± 0.41 SE) Sea Lice per fish and 6.1 (± 0.24SE) Sea Lice per gram host weight. Fully 75.0% of fish were infected at loads equivalent to or higher than the lethal limit reported for much larger Sea Trout (Salmo trutta) post-smolts. Abundance (Kruskal-Wallis statistic = 100.95, p<0.0001) and intensity (KW= 70.05, p<0.0001) of lice, and mean number of lice/g host weight (K-W= 112.23, p<0.0001) were significantly higher in juvenile Pink Salmon in close proximity to salmon farms, than in Pink Salmon distant from salmon farms

    Salmon farms: are we making progress

    Commercial finfish aquaculture has endured a turbulent thirty years since its arrival in British Columbia. The international record on the state of wild salmonid populations exposed to salmon farms is not encouraging as there is no region where salmon farming and stable wild salmonid populations coexist. The industry has made changes as it matures, reporting better siting, sea lice control and vaccines. However at the same time the number of fish per farm has risen to 1.7 million, adjacent commercial fisheries are largely closed, orca are increasing failing to carry offspring full term and First Nations are without food fish. In this presentation we review the current state of two of the most controversial public concerns regarding impact of salmon farms on wild salmon: sea louse management and exposure to farm-origin disease agents. Is there visible progress? Are there indicators that equilibrium between farmed and wild salmon populations can be reached? What is the scientific record telling us and where do we go from here

    Research-Informed Guidelines for the Development of Adaptively-Released Assessment Feedback (ARAF) Strategies in Higher Education

    Assessment feedback has the potential to significantly impact on learning; this can be in the form of quantitative or qualitative feedback, or both. While assessment feedback is intended to provide students with insight into how their learning has progressed against learning outcomes, exploratory research into the impact of assessment feedback has found that students pay more heed to numeric grades than qualitative comments, despite the latter having more potential to positively impact learning. This paper reports on a project, funded by the Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT), to determine the impact of feedback strategies on students’ learning. Academic staff and students\u27 perspectives were sought about the manner in which assessment feedback was provided to establish the impact feedback had on learning. This study considered differentiated types of assessment feedback and the way in which they were distributed, to determine the quality of students\u27 post-assessment learning and students’ ability to reflect on past learning to enhance future learning.     Incorporating carbon into health care: adding carbon emissions to health technology assessments

    Summary At the UN Climate Change Conference 26 in Glasgow, 50 countries committed to low-carbon health services, with 14 countries further committing to net-zero carbon health services by 2050. Reaching this target will require decision makers to include carbon emissions when evaluating new and existing health technologies (tests and treatments). There is currently, however, a scarcity of data on the carbon footprint of health-care interventions, nor any means for decision makers to include and consider carbon emission health-care assessments. We therefore investigated how to integrate carbon emissions calculated by environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) into health technology assessments (HTA). HTAs are extensively used in developing clinical and policy guidelines by individual public or private payers, and by government organisations. In the first section we explain the methodological differences between environmentally extended input-output and process-based LCA. The second section outlines ways in which carbon emissions calculated by LCA could be integrated with HTAs, recognising that HTAs are done in several ways by different jurisdictions. International effort and processes will be needed to ensure that robust and comprehensive carbon footprints of commonly used health-care products are freely available. The technical and implementation challenges of incorporating carbon emissions into HTAs are considerable, but not unsurmountable. Our aim is to lay foundations for meeting these challenges

    Annexin A2 is a novel Cellular Redox Regulatory Protein involved in Tumorigenesis

    Annexins are a structurally related family of calcium and phospholipid-binding proteins that are involved in the regulation of a wide range of molecular and cellular processes. Annexin A2 is unique among the annexins in that it possesses redox sensitive cysteine(s). The ubiquitous and abundant expression of ANXA2 in cells and its reactivity with hydrogen peroxide led us to hypothesize that this protein could play a role in cellular redox regulation. Here we show that ANXA2 protein levels are induced by hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, depletion of ANXA2 resulted in the elevation of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon oxidative stress, increased activation of the ROS-induced pro-apoptotic kinases, JNK, p38 and Akt and elevated sensitivity to ROS-mediated cellular damage/death. ANXA2-null mice showed significantly elevated protein oxidation in the liver and lung tissues compared to WT mice. ANXA2 depleted cancer cells showed enhanced cellular protein oxidationconcomitant with decreased tumor growth compared to control cancer cells andboth the oxidation of cellular proteins and tumor growth deficit werereversed by the antioxidant N-acetyl cysteine, indicating that ANXA2 plays akey role in the regulation of cellular redox during tumorigenesis. Ex-vivo human cancer studies showed that up-regulation of the reduced form of ANXA2 is associated with protection of the tumor proteins from oxidation. In summary, our results indicate that ANXA2 plays an important role incellular redox regulation by protecting cells from oxidative stress, aneffect that is particularly important during tumorigenesis

    GRADE equity guidelines 4: guidance on how to assess and address health equity within the evidence to decision process

    Objective: The aim of this paper is to provide detailed guidance on how to incorporate health equity within the GRADE (Grading Recommendations Assessment and Development Evidence) evidence to decision process. Study design and setting: We developed this guidance based on the GRADE evidence to decision (EtD) framework, iteratively reviewing and modifying draft documents, in person discussion of project group members and input from other GRADE members. Results: Considering the impact on health equity may be required, both in general guidelines, and guidelines that focus on disadvantaged populations. We suggest two approaches to incorporate equity considerations: 1) assessing the potential impact of interventions on equity and; 2) incorporating equity considerations when judging or weighing each of the evidence to decision criteria. We provide guidance and include illustrative examples. Conclusion: Guideline panels should consider the impact of recommendations on health equity with attention to remote and underserviced settings and disadvantaged populations. Guideline panels may wish to incorporate equity judgments across the evidence to decision framework

    The tyrosine phosphatase CD148 is an essential positive regulator of platelet activation and thrombosis

    Platelets play a fundamental role in hemostasis and thrombosis. They are also involved in pathologic conditions resulting from blocked blood vessels, including myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. Platelet adhesion, activation, and aggregation at sites of vascular injury are regulated by a diverse repertoire of tyrosine kinase–linked and G protein–coupled receptors. Src family kinases (SFKs) play a central role in initiating and propagating signaling from several platelet surface receptors; however, the underlying mechanism of how SFK activity is regulated in platelets remains unclear. CD148 is the only receptor-like protein tyrosine phosphatase identified in platelets to date. In the present study, we show that mutant mice lacking CD148 exhibited a bleeding tendency and defective arterial thrombosis. Basal SFK activity was found to be markedly reduced in CD148-deficient platelets, resulting in a global hyporesponsiveness to agonists that signal through SFKs, including collagen and fibrinogen. G protein–coupled receptor responses to thrombin and other agonists were also marginally reduced. These results highlight CD148 as a global regulator of platelet activation and a novel antithrombotic drug targe
