Sub-diffraction light propagation in fibers with anisotropic dielectric cores
We present a detailed study of light propagation in waveguides with
anisotropic metamaterial cores. We demonstrate that in contrast to conventional
optical fibers, our structures support free-space-like propagating modes even
when the waveguide radius is much smaller than the wavelength. We develop
analytical formalism to describe mode structure and propagation in strongly
anisotropic systems and study the effects related to waveguide boundaries and
material composition
Dyadic influences on awareness of condition in people with dementia: findings from the IDEAL cohort

We investigated the contribution of caregiver and dyadic characteristics to the difference in perspective between caregiver-informants and people with dementia about difficulties experienced, when considering awareness of condition. Methods: We conducted exploratory cross-sectional analyses using data from the IDEAL cohort. Participants were 1,038 community-dwelling people with mild-to-moderate dementia, and coresident spouse/partner caregivers. The Representations and Adjustment to Dementia Index (RADIX) checklist reporting difficulties commonly experienced in dementia was completed by 960 caregiver-informants and 989 people with dementia. Difference in scores was calculated for 916 dyads. Demographic information, cognition, informant-rated functional ability and neuropsychiatric symptoms were recorded for the person with dementia. Self-reported data were collected on mood, comorbidity, religion, importance of religion, relationship quality, and caregiver stress. Results: For most dyads, caregivers reported more RADIX difficulties than people with dementia. Caregiver RADIX ratings were more closely associated with informant-rated functional ability and neuropsychiatric symptoms than with cognition. More RADIX difficulties and higher stress were reported by female caregivers. Greater RADIX difference was associated with more caregiver stress, and older age but less depression in people with dementia. Conclusion: Few dyadic characteristics were important, but caregiver stress was higher where caregivers reported more RADIX difficulties and/or the difference in perspective was greater, whereas partners with dementia reported better mood. In addition to offering information about awareness of condition, the caregiver rating and difference in perspectives could indicate where more support is needed
Digit-only sauropod pes trackways from China - evidence of swimming or a preservational phenomenon?
For more than 70 years unusual sauropod trackways have played a pivotal role in debates about the swimming ability of sauropods. Most claims that sauropods could swim have been based on manus-only or manus-dominated trackways. However none of these incomplete trackways has been entirely convincing, and most have proved to be taphonomic artifacts, either undertracks or the result of differential depth of penetration of manus and pes tracks, but otherwise showed the typical pattern of normal walking trackways. Here we report an assemblage of unusual sauropod tracks from the Lower Cretaceous Hekou Group of Gansu Province, northern China, characterized by the preservation of only the pes claw traces, that we interpret as having been left by walking, not buoyant or swimming, individuals. They are interpreted as the result of animals moving on a soft mud-silt substrate, projecting their claws deeply to register their traces on an underlying sand layer where they gained more grip during progression. Other sauropod walking trackways on the same surface with both pes and manus traces preserved, were probably left earlier on relatively firm substrates that predated the deposition of soft mud and silt . Presently, there is no convincing evidence of swimming sauropods from their trackways, which is not to say that sauropods did not swim at all
General entanglement
The paper contains a brief review of an approach to quantum entanglement
based on analysis of dynamic symmetry of systems and quantum uncertainties,
accompanying the measurement of mean value of certain basic observables. The
latter are defined in terms of the orthogonal basis of Lie algebra,
corresponding to the dynamic symmetry group. We discuss the relativity of
entanglement with respect to the choice of basic observables and a way of

Low-Energy Theorems from Holography
In the context of gauge/gravity duality, we verify two types of gauge theory
low-energy theorems, the dilation Ward identities and the decoupling of heavy
flavor. First, we provide an analytic proof of non-trivial dilation Ward
identities for a theory holographically dual to a background with gluon
condensate (the self-dual Liu--Tseytlin background). In this way an important
class of low-energy theorems for correlators of different operators with the
trace of the energy-momentum tensor is established, which so far has been
studied in field theory only. Another low-energy relationship, the so-called
decoupling theorem, is numerically shown to hold universally in three
holographic models involving both the quark and the gluon condensate. We show
this by comparing the ratio of the quark and gluon condensates in three
different examples of gravity backgrounds with non-trivial dilaton flow. As a
by-product of our study, we also obtain gauge field condensate contributions to

Questioning Classic Patient Classification Techniques in Gait Rehabilitation: Insights from Wearable Haptic Technology
Classifying stroke survivors based on their walking abilities is an important part of the gait rehabilitation process. It can act as powerful indicator of function and prognosis in both the early days after a stroke and long after a survivor receives rehabilitation. This classification often relies solely on walking speed; a quick and easy measure, with only a stopwatch needed. However, walking speed may not be the most accurate way of judging individual’s walking ability. Advances in technology mean we are now in a position where ubiquitous and wearable technologies can be used to elicit much richer measures to characterise gait. In this paper we present a case study from one of our studies, where within a homogenous group of stroke survivors (based on walking speed classification) important differences in individual results and the way they responded to rhythmic haptic cueing were identified during the piloting of a novel gait rehabilitation technique
The Imperfect Fluid behind Kinetic Gravity Braiding
We present a standard hydrodynamical description for non-canonical scalar
field theories with kinetic gravity braiding. In particular, this picture
applies to the simplest galileons and k-essence. The fluid variables not only
have a clear physical meaning but also drastically simplify the analysis of the
system. The fluid carries charges corresponding to shifts in field space. This
shift-charge current contains a spatial part responsible for diffusion of the
charges. Moreover, in the incompressible limit, the equation of motion becomes
the standard diffusion equation. The fluid is indeed imperfect because the
energy flows neither along the field gradient nor along the shift current. The
fluid has zero vorticity and is not dissipative: there is no entropy
production, the energy-momentum is exactly conserved, the temperature vanishes
and there is no shear viscosity. Still, in an expansion around a perfect fluid
one can identify terms which correct the pressure in the manner of bulk
viscosity. We close by formulating the non-trivial conditions for the

Nonlinearity of Mechanochemical Motions in Motor Proteins
The assumption of linear response of protein molecules to thermal noise or
structural perturbations, such as ligand binding or detachment, is broadly used
in the studies of protein dynamics. Conformational motions in proteins are
traditionally analyzed in terms of normal modes and experimental data on
thermal fluctuations in such macromolecules is also usually interpreted in
terms of the excitation of normal modes. We have chosen two important protein
motors - myosin V and kinesin KIF1A - and performed numerical investigations of
their conformational relaxation properties within the coarse-grained elastic
network approximation. We have found that the linearity assumption is deficient
for ligand-induced conformational motions and can even be violated for
characteristic thermal fluctuations. The deficiency is particularly pronounced
in KIF1A where the normal mode description fails completely in describing
functional mechanochemical motions. These results indicate that important
assumptions of the theory of protein dynamics may need to be reconsidered.
Neither a single normal mode, nor a superposition of such modes yield an
approximation of strongly nonlinear dynamics.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Effects of affective picture viewing on postural control
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Emotion theory holds that unpleasant events prime withdrawal actions, whereas pleasant events prime approach actions. Recent studies have suggested that passive viewing of emotion eliciting images results in postural adjustments, which become manifest as changes in body center of pressure (COP) trajectories. From those studies it appears that posture is modulated most when viewing pictures with negative valence. The present experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that pictures with negative valence have a greater impact on postural control than neutral or positive ones. Thirty-four healthy subjects passively viewed a series of emotion eliciting images, while standing either in a bipedal or unipedal stance on a force plate. The images were adopted from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS). We analysed mean and variability of the COP and the length of the associated sway path as a function of emotion.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The mean position of the COP was unaffected by emotion, but unipedal stance resulted in overall greater body sway than bipedal stance. We found a modest effect of emotion on COP: viewing pictures of mutilation resulted in a smaller sway path, but only in unipedal stance. We obtained valence and arousal ratings of the images with an independent sample of viewers. These subjects rated the unpleasant images as significantly less pleasant than neutral images, and the pleasant images as significantly more pleasant than neutral images. However, the subjects rated the images as overall less pleasant and less arousing than viewers in a closely comparable American study, pointing to unknown differences in viewer characteristics.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Overall, viewing emotion eliciting images had little effect on body sway. Our finding of a reduction in sway path length when viewing pictures of mutilation was indicative of a freezing strategy, i.e. fear bradycardia. The results are consistent with current knowledge about the neuroanatomical organization of the emotion system and the neural control of behavior.</p
