    The Intricate Interplay Between Cancer Stem Cells and Cell-of-Origin of Cancer: Implications for Therapeutic Strategies

    BACKGROUND: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) have emerged as pivotal players in tumorigenesis, disease progression, and resistance to therapies. OBJECTIVE: This comprehensive review delves into the intricate relationship between CSCs and the cell-of-origin in diverse cancer types. DESIGN: Comprehensive review of thematically-relevant literature. METHODS: We explore the underlying molecular mechanisms that drive the conversion of normal cells into CSCs and the impact of the cell-of-origin on CSC properties, tumor initiation, and therapeutic responses. Moreover, we discuss potential therapeutic interventions targeting CSCs based on their distinct cell-of-origin characteristics. RESULTS: Accruing evidence suggest that the cell-of-origin, the cell type from which the tumor originates, plays a crucial role in determining the properties of CSCs and their contribution to tumor heterogeneity. CONCLUSION: By providing critical insights into the complex interplay between CSCs and their cellular origins, this article aims to enhance our understanding of cancer biology and pave the way for more effective and personalized cancer treatments

    Patterns of Interactions in Complex Social Networks Based on Coloured Motifs Analysis

    Coloured network motifs are small subgraphs that enable to discover and interpret the patterns of interaction within the complex networks. The analysis of three-nodes motifs where the colour of the node reflects its high – white node or low – black node centrality in the social network is presented in the paper. The importance of the vertices is assessed by utilizing two measures: degree prestige and degree centrality. The distribution of motifs in these two cases is compared to mine the interconnection patterns between nodes. The analysis is performed on the social network derived from email communication

    Unstable superheavy relic particles as a source of neutrinos responsible for the ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays

    Decays of superheavy relic particles may produce extremely energetic neutrinos. Their annihilations on the relic neutrinos can be the origin of the cosmic rays with energies beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff. The red shift acts as a cosmological filter selecting the sources at some particular value z_e, for which the present neutrino energy is close to the Z pole of the annihilation cross section. We predict no directional correlation of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays with the galactic halo. At the same time, there can be some directional correlations in the data, reflecting the distribution of matter at red shift z=z_e. Both of these features are manifest in the existing data. Our scenario is consistent with the neutrino mass reported by Super-Kamiokande and requires no lepton asymmetry or clustering of the background neutrinos.Comment: 3 pages, revtex; references adde

    Disappearance of Elliptic Flow: A New Probe for the Nuclear Equation of State

    Using a relativistic hadron transport model, we investigate the utility of the elliptic flow excitation function as a probe for the stiffness of nuclear matter and for the onset of a possible quark-gluon-plasma (QGP) phase-transition at AGS energies 1 < E_Beam < 11 AGeV. The excitation function shows a strong dependence on the nuclear equation of state, and exhibits characteristic signatures which could signal the onset of a phase transition to the QGP.Comment: 11 pages, 4 Postscript figures, uses epsf.sty, submitted to Physical Review Letter

    Molecular Gas in Infrared Ultraluminous QSO Hosts

    We report CO detections in 17 out of 19 infrared ultraluminous QSO (IR QSO) hosts observed with the IRAM 30m telescope. The cold molecular gas reservoir in these objects is in a range of 0.2--2.1×1010M⊙\times 10^{10}M_\odot (adopting a CO-to-H2{\rm H_2} conversion factor αCO=0.8M⊙(Kkms−1pc2)−1\alpha_{\rm CO}=0.8 M_\odot {\rm (K km s^{-1} pc^2)^{-1}}). We find that the molecular gas properties of IR QSOs, such as the molecular gas mass, star formation efficiency (LFIR/LCO′L_{\rm FIR}/L^\prime_{\rm CO}) and the CO (1-0) line widths, are indistinguishable from those of local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). A comparison of low- and high-redshift CO detected QSOs reveals a tight correlation between LFIR_{\rm FIR} and LCO(1−0)′L^\prime_{\rm CO(1-0)} for all QSOs. This suggests that, similar to ULIRGs, the far-infrared emissions of all QSOs are mainly from dust heated by star formation rather than by active galactic nuclei (AGNs), confirming similar findings from mid-infrared spectroscopic observations by {\it Spitzer}. A correlation between the AGN-associated bolometric luminosities and the CO line luminosities suggests that star formation and AGNs draw from the same reservoir of gas and there is a link between star formation on ∼\sim kpc scale and the central black hole accretion process on much smaller scales.Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    We examine whether the cosmologies with varying speed of light (VSL) are compatible with the second law of thermodynamics.
