The association between MPOWER tobacco control policies and adolescent smoking across 36 countries: An ecological study over time (2006–2014)

Objective: To examine associations over time between national tobacco control policies and adolescent smoking prevalence in Europe and Canada. Design: In this ecological study, national tobacco control policies (MPOWER measures, as derived from WHO data) in 36 countries and their changes over time were related to national-level adolescent smoking rates (as derived from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study, 2006-2014). MPOWER measures included were: Protecting people from tobacco smoke (P), offering help to quit tobacco use (O), warning about the dangers of tobacco (W), enforcing bans on advertising, promotion and sponsorship (E) and raising taxes on tobacco (R). Results: Across countries, adolescent weekly smoking decreased from 17.7% in 2006 to 11.6% in 2014. It decreased most strongly between 2010 and 2014. Although baseline MPOWER policies were not directly associated with differences in average rates of adolescent smoking between countries, countries with higher baseline smoke-free policies (P) showed faster rates of change in smoking over the time period. Moreover, countries that adopted increasingly strict policies regarding warning labels (W) over time, faced stronger declines over time in adolescent weekly smoking. Conclusion: A decade after the introduction of the WHO MPOWER package, we observed that, in our sample of European countries and Canada, measures targeting social norms around smoking (i.e., smoke-free policies in public places and policies related to warning people about the dangers of tobacco) are most strongly related to declines in adolescent smoking.publishedVersio

Antioxidant and antimicrobial peptide fractions from squid and tuna skin gelatin

27 páginas, 4 figuras, 4 tablas.Gelatin extracted from tuna skins and giant squid tunics were hydrolysed with Alcalase at 50ºC for 3h. Two peptide fractions (1-10K and ≤1K) were obtained from each gelatin hydrolysate by subjecting them to centrifugal ultrafiltration using successively a 10 kDa and a 1 kDa membrane. The peptide fractions were characterized in terms of amino acid composition and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Antioxidant properties were tested according to the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay and the radical scavenging capacity (ABTS) assay. A disk diffusion test was performed to test antimicrobial action against a panel of Gram-positive and Gramnegative pathogenic and fish spoilage-associated microorganisms. Although antioxidant and antimicrobial properties could be detected in all tested peptide fractions, the lowermost molecular weight fraction from squid hydrolysate presented the highest reducing and radical scavenging capacities, whereas microbial growth inhibition was found to be specifically related to the type of microorganism. This study was supported by the Spanish “Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia” (project AGL2005-02380/ALI and AGL2008-02135/ALI).Peer reviewe

Brazil's Engagement in International Development Cooperation: The State of the Debate

    Get PDF
The international development cooperation architecture has changed dramatically over the last decade. The global context, characterised by a lingering financial crisis and the emergence of new powers, has brought South–South Development Cooperation (SSDC) to the core of international development debate. The growing influence of emerging countries, such as the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), as development cooperation providers requires a deeper understanding of how and to what extent these countries are promoting sustainable and inclusive development by cooperating with partners in the global South. To be able to answer these questions, the national dynamics need to be unpacked by mapping institutions, ideas, and interests informing decision-making processes, and shaping, not only policy priorities, but also the effectiveness of development cooperation. Brazil is in the spotlight and Brazilian cooperation, in all its different modalities (from technical, scientific and technological, educational, and humanitarian cooperation to contributions to international organisations, refugee support and protection, and peace operations), has risen to unprecedented levels in recent years. According to official data, Brazilian development cooperation increased from US160millionin2005tomorethanUS160 million in 2005 to more than US900 million in 2010. In that period, the country’s technical cooperation disbursements grew almost fourfold and its humanitarian cooperation expanded from less than half a million dollars in 2005 to US$161 million in 2010. However, interviews and the current budget freeze on the Brazilian Cooperation Agency’s (ABC) activities indicate that the upward trend may have changed in the last three years.UK Department for International Developmen
