Export structure and growth : a detailed analysis for Argentina

    Get PDF
This paper examines recent changes in the structure of Argentine exports and the implications for future growth. The authors find that the current export structure of Argentina is not conducive to future growth because it is dominated by low-productivity goods that tend to be exported by low-income countries. The productivity content of Argentine exports has increased recently although, as of 2004, these changes have been relatively minor. The authors identify products with characteristics similar to those currently exported by Argentina and which are morelikely to foster growth because they would shift the structure of exports more the efficiency frontier. Those products include chemicals and primary products with some degree of value added, including partly processed meat, fish and grains. If economic growth is to be fostered by developing new export products and by increasing the value added of existing exports, there will be a need for sector-specific analysis to address possible market failures. The analysis should focus on issues such as the provision of public goods needed for production (including infrastructure, but also complex intangibles such as sector-specific legislation), possible impediments to effective coordination, sector-specific and economy wide externalities, or barriers to information. This last source of potential market failure is critical to a successful policy framework for exports and growth.Economic Theory&Research,Transport Economics Policy&Planning,Tax Law,Water and Industry,Agribusiness&Markets

Functionalization of silicon carbide by magnetic nanoparticles for tracer uses

    Get PDF
The present work reports a novel and simple way to functionalize commercial silicon carbide with magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4). Maghemite and magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical coprecipitation of FeCl3·6H2O and FeCl2·4H2O with a proportion 2:1. This method was selected for its simplicity, reproducibility and low cost in terms of solvents and chemical reagents. They were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetometry (MIAtek®) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV). The main objective of this work is to study the coating of SiC with Fe3O4 in four different situations: synthesis or addition of magnetic nanoparticles, evaporation of water, and use of a binder. The particles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), magnetometry (MIAtek®) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). As observed by MIAtek® there is a difference between the methods used, evaporation of water being the best technique to obtain functionalized SiC with 0,5 wt% coated nanoparticles and showing no apparent change on morphology and a high magnetic saturation reachable at low applied field and room temperature, making this method, suitable for tracer uses

CellSim: a validated modular heterogeneous multiprocessor simulator

    Get PDF
As the number of transistors on a chip continues increasing the power consumption has become the most important constraint in processors design. Therefore, to increase performance, computer architects have decided to use multiprocessors. Moreover, recent studies have shown that heterogeneous chip multiprocessors have greater potential than homogeneous ones. We have built a modular simulator for heterogeneous multiprocessors that can be configure to model IBM's Cell Processor. The simulator has been validated against the real machine to be used as a research tool.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
