    From time to time in Word Ways we have seen logological wordplay illustrated from a bewildering variety of sources. In this article we propose to show that one need not always look in arcane and esoteric references to prove one\u27s point. Why not turn first to the major U.S. dictionary, Webster\u27s Third New International? In particular, we see little if any need for referring to obsolete dictionaries, such as Webster\u27s Second (which only invites Webster\u27s First, which invites who-knows-what), nor to specialized once-only publications. We don\u27t object to these less authoritative works -- we simply wish to point out that these other references should only be considered the prime authority

    Unearthing learners’ conceptions of reflection to innovate business education for the 21st century

    The development of learners’ capacities for critical reflection is an important learning outcome for 21st century business education. Theories suggest that a learner holds a particular orientation to reflection, and that this perspective will be influenced by his or her underlying beliefs. This, coupled with an increased focus on the student experience, personal development, and self-regulation in higher education, offers scope for considering instructional design from a second-order perspective, or in other words, from the student’s point of view. This study sought to understand: 1) the ways that business students orientate to reflection, 2) the different conceptions they hold of reflection, and 3) whether there is a relationship between the two. Reflective learning questionnaires were completed by 112 business students studying at the University of Northampton. Survey results showed that while the research instrument was a good fit for investigating orientations to and conceptions of reflection, there did not appear to be a correlation between the two. Learning analytics such as these will be useful for considering how the University can design more meaningful business curricula. However, the disconnect between conceptions of and orientations to reflection needs to be explored through further research

    Rating life events : the effect of experience and point of reference

    Life events inventories have been extensively used to investigate the relationship between stressful life events and the etiology of disease. In order to elucidate conceptual and methodological issues surrounding the use of these instruments, a Life Events Questionnaire was constructed and administered to 100 university students. Subjects indicated which of 40 events they had experienced and rated all events on a 20 point scale based on the amount of readjustment judged to be required by each event, both for themselves and for a hypothetical average person. Results of a three-way ANOVA indicated that in the majority of cases, neither the gender nor the experience of the rater, nor the point of reference used in making the judgment had a significant effect on the magnitude of the ratings obtained. For ratings of events which did show significant group differences, the primary finding was that normative values appear to be more consistently applied to estimates of others\u27 reactions than to those of the raters themselves

    Evaluating the Effects of Temperature and Photoperiod on the Flowering Responses of Poinsettia

    During greenhouse production of poinsettia, flower initiation can be delayed by exposure to supra-optimal temperatures; this phenomenon is termed “heat delay.” Poinsettias that are delayed by high temperatures may mature too late to be shipped in time for the Christmas market. This can lead to a significant loss of revenue on a crop that is considered to be marginally profitable. The increasing global temperatures brought on by climate change are expected to amplify the magnitude of heat delay in susceptible regions and spread this problem to new areas previously unaffected by heat delay. The goal of this thesis was to evaluate the interaction of temperature and night length (NL) on flower initiation as well as differentiate the effect of NL on flower initiation and flower development. In Chapter 1, the heat-sensitive cultivar ‘Prestige Red’ and the heat-tolerant cultivar ‘Orion Red’ were subjected to sixty treatments consisting of three day temperatures, four night temperature, and five NLs for the first 17 d of the experiment; following these 17 d, all plants were consolidated to one greenhouse with an inductive environment. The results from this chapter demonstrate that the poinsettia flowering response to temperature depends on NL; however, in both cultivars, the rate of flowering increased in a sigmoidal pattern as NL increased. High day temperatures affected flowering during the first 17 d when flower initiation took place at a 12-h NL for both cultivars, while high night temperatures uniquely delayed flowering of the heat-sensitive cultivar at NL from 12-14 h. In Chapter 2, the effect of NL on flower development in ‘Prestige Red’ was evaluated by providing NLs from 11 to 14 h following 10 or 17 d under 14-h NLs. Leaf number was not affected by the NL treatments suggesting that flower initiation occurred during the 10 SD prior to the start of the NL treatments; thus, the NL treatments only affected flower development. The results from this chapter demonstrate that minimal differences in flower development occur at NL \u3e 12 h; however, an 11-h NL resulted in significantly fewer plants reaching anthesis, fewer stem bracts, and lower stem bract ratings at all node positions compared to the 12-, 13-, or 14-h NLs. The results from this project demonstrate that a 14-h NL results in rapid flower initiation, an optimal rate of flower development, and optimal bract color development. Furthermore, providing a 14-h NL will not entirely alleviate heat delay in heat-sensitive cultivars, but flowering will occur faster at a 14-h NL than if the plants were receiving natural NL during flower initiation. For this reason, black clothing poinsettias is an effective method for reducing the magnitude of heat delay when high temperatures cannot be avoided. As NL decreases below 14 h, the rate of flower initiation is increasingly delayed, which causes slower overall crop response time. During flower development, NLs between 12 and 14 h have a minimal effect on crop response time, but a 12-h NL will negatively affect color development relative to 13- or 14 h NLs.     Promoting reflection in asynchronous virtual learning spaces: tertiary distance tutors' conceptions

    Increasingly, universities are embedding reflective activities into the curriculum. With the growth in online tertiary education, how effectively is reflection being promoted or used in online learning spaces? Based on the notion that teachers’ beliefs will influence their approaches to teaching, this research sought to understand how a group of distance tutors at the UK Open University conceptualised reflection. It was hoped that these findings would illuminate their approaches to promoting reflection as part of their online pedagogies. Phenomenographic analysis indicated that these tutors conceptualised reflection in four qualitatively different ways. Furthermore, the data suggested that these educators held a combination of two conceptions: one that understood the origin of being reflective and one that understood the purpose of reflection. Analysis of structural aspects of these conceptions offered insight into tutors’ own perspectives for what is needed to make online learning environments fertile territory for reflective learning
