On the Structure of Liquid Methyl Salicylate: the Role of Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding
A study on the structure of methyl salicylate is reported using quantum mechanical calculations, molecular dynamics simulations, vibrational spectroscopy and microwave dielectric relaxation spectroscopy tools. The reported results show that a strong intramolecular hydrogen bonding is developed between the hydroxyl hydrogen and carbonyl oxygen. This intramolecular interaction is maintained in gas and liquid phases and even when diluted in inert solvents. Interaction between neighbour molecules is developed through dipolar interactions, and thus, intermolecular hydrogen bonding should be discarded for pure liquid methyl salicylate. The interaction between neighbour methyl salicylate molecules do not lead to remarkable changes in the intramolecular hydrogen bonding
El caso de la Barcelona Traction. Una revisión
This paper seeks to contribute answers to diverse queries that have maintained the case of the Spanish control of Barcelona Traction unconcluded in spite of the years and its importance. The answers are useful to discover the relationships among the main sides of the topic, some of them only suspected and other simply unknown ones. The rejection to the 1945 plan, the origins of the 1951 Statement, the irregularities of the BT group and of the March group, the Canadian abandonment in its diplomatic task, the British support to March, the series of frustrated negotiations..., all of them are useful to know who the winner of the BT case was and what behaviors were decisive for that outcome. Intermolecular forces in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide + ethanol mixtures
The characteristics of intermolecular forces in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide + ethanol mixtures were studied in the full composition range using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Molecular clusters were used to model the short-range interactions between the ionic liquid and the primary alcohol, studied using density functional theory calculations, inferring preferred interaction sites, strength of interactions and topological characteristics of intermolecular forces. Dynamic viscosity and refraction index were measured as a function of mixture composition and temperature and analysed in terms of evolution of intermolecular forces. Raman IR studies were carried out and the analysis of selected spectral regions allowed to characterize hydrogen bonding evolution for all the possible interacting sites.
TAK1 mRNA Expression in the Tumor Tissue of Locally Advanced Head and Neck Cancer Patients
Resistance to radio and chemotherapy is one of the major drawbacks in the progression of head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) patients, evidencing the importance of finding optimum molecular prognosis markers to develop personalized treatment schedules. TGF-β effector TAK1 activity has been related to a greater aggressiveness in several types of cancer (Kondo et al. 1998; Edlund et al. 2003; Kaur et al. 2005) and, although there has been described no significant implication of TAK1 in HNSCC development, we have further examined the role of its mRNA expression as a marker of prognosis in HNSCC. Fifty-nine advanced HNSCC patients were recruited for the study. The tumor expression of TAK1 mRNA was analyzed with RT-PCR using Taqman technology and its relationship with the clinical outcome of the patients studied. TAK1 mRNA expression was lower in patients that relapsed than in those that did not, but the difference was only significant between the patients that showed response to treatment (p < 0.001). ROC curve analyses pointed a 0.5 expression ratio TAK1/B2M value as an optimum cut-off point for relapse and response. Our data suggest the TAK1 mRNA analysis by Taqman RT-PCR can predict the risk of relapse in HNSCC patients
Insights on the water effect on deep eutectic solvents properties and structuring: The archetypical case of choline chloride + ethylene glycol
The effect of water on the properties and nanostructuring of the prototypical choline chloride: ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent is studied using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. The reported results showed large hydrophilic character of the solvent, which is based on the ability of water molecules to be hydrogen bonded to the different components of the eutectic in a efficient way. The effect of water on the studied fluid is largely dependent on the concentration range but the properties of the eutectic solvent can be maintained up to reasonably large water content. Therefore, the water content in these solvents may be used for tuning and controlling their properties but maintaining properties and features.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (Spain, project RTI2018-101987-B-I00).
