    First measurement of Ξc0\Xi_{\rm c}^0 production in pp collisions at s\mathbf{\sqrt{s}} = 7 TeV

    The production of the charm-strange baryon Ξc0\Xi_{\rm c}^0 is measured for the first time at the LHC via its semileptonic decay into e+Ξ−Μe^+\Xi^-\nu_{\rm e} in pp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV with the ALICE detector. The transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 1 << pTp_{\rm T} << 8 GeV/cc at mid-rapidity, ∣y∣|y| << 0.5. The transverse momentum dependence of the Ξc0\Xi_{\rm c}^0 baryon production relative to the D0^0 meson production is compared to predictions of event generators with various tunes of the hadronisation mechanism, which are found to underestimate the measured cross-section ratio.Comment: 22 pages, 6 captioned figures, 1 table, authors from page 17, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/412

    Constraining the magnitude of the Chiral Magnetic Effect with Event Shape Engineering in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76$ TeV

    In ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, the event-by-event variation of the elliptic flow v2v_2 reflects fluctuations in the shape of the initial state of the system. This allows to select events with the same centrality but different initial geometry. This selection technique, Event Shape Engineering, has been used in the analysis of charge-dependent two- and three-particle correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} =2.76 TeV. The two-particle correlator ⟹cos⁥(φα−φÎČ)⟩\langle \cos(\varphi_\alpha - \varphi_\beta) \rangle, calculated for different combinations of charges α\alpha and ÎČ\beta, is almost independent of v2v_2 (for a given centrality), while the three-particle correlator ⟹cos⁥(φα+φÎČ−2Κ2)⟩\langle \cos(\varphi_\alpha + \varphi_\beta - 2\Psi_2) \rangle scales almost linearly both with the event v2v_2 and charged-particle pseudorapidity density. The charge dependence of the three-particle correlator is often interpreted as evidence for the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME), a parity violating effect of the strong interaction. However, its measured dependence on v2v_2 points to a large non-CME contribution to the correlator. Comparing the results with Monte Carlo calculations including a magnetic field due to the spectators, the upper limit of the CME signal contribution to the three-particle correlator in the 10-50% centrality interval is found to be 26-33% at 95% confidence level.Comment: 20 pages, 6 captioned figures, 1 tables, authors from page 15, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/382

    Energy dependence of exclusive J/ψJ/\psi photoproduction off protons in ultra-peripheral p-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} = 5.02 TeV

    The ALICE Collaboration has measured the energy dependence of exclusive photoproduction of J/ψJ/\psi vector mesons off proton targets in ultra-peripheral p-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02 TeV. The e+^+e−^- and ÎŒ+Ό−\mu^+\mu^- decay channels are used to measure the cross section as a function of the rapidity of the J/ψJ/\psi in the range −2.5<y<2.7-2.5 < y < 2.7, corresponding to an energy in the Îł\gammap centre-of-mass in the interval 40<WÎłp<55040 < W_{\gamma\mathrm{p}}<550 GeV. The measurements, which are consistent with a power law dependence of the exclusive J/ψJ/\psi photoproduction cross section, are compared to previous results from HERA and the LHC and to several theoretical models.     Measurement of the production of charm jets tagged with D0^{0} mesons in pp collisions at s\sqrt{s}= 7 TeV

    The production of charm jets in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV was measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 6.236.23 nb−1{\rm nb}^{-1}, collected using a minimum-bias trigger. Charm jets are identified by the presence of a D0^0 meson among their constituents. The D0^0 mesons are reconstructed from their hadronic decay D0→^0\rightarrowK−π+^{-}\pi^{+}. The D0^0-meson tagged jets are reconstructed using tracks of charged particles (track-based jets) with the anti-kTk_{\mathrm{T}} algorithm in the jet transverse momentum range 5<pT,jetch<305<p_{\rm{T,jet}}^{\mathrm{ch}}<30 GeV/c{\rm GeV/}c and pseudorapidity ∣ηjet∣<0.5|\eta_{\rm jet}|<0.5. The fraction of charged jets containing a D0^0-meson increases with pT,jetchp_{\rm{T,jet}}^{\rm{ch}} from 0.042±0.004 (stat)±0.006 (syst)0.042 \pm 0.004\, \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.006\, \mathrm{(syst)} to 0.080±0.009 (stat)±0.008 (syst)0.080 \pm 0.009\, \rm{(stat)} \pm 0.008\, \rm{(syst)}. The distribution of D0^0-meson tagged jets as a function of the jet momentum fraction carried by the D0^0 meson in the direction of the jet axis (z∣∣chz_{||}^{\mathrm{ch}}) is reported for two ranges of jet transverse momenta, 5<pT,jetch<155<p_{\rm{T,jet}}^{\rm{ch}}<15 GeV/c{\rm GeV/}c and 15<pT,jetch<3015<p_{\rm{T,jet}}^{\rm{ch}}<30 GeV/c{\rm GeV/}c in the intervals 0.2<z∣∣ch<1.00.2<z_{||}^{\rm{ch}}<1.0 and 0.4<z∣∣ch<1.00.4<z_{||}^{\rm{ch}}<1.0, respectively. The data are compared with results from Monte Carlo event generators (PYTHIA 6, PYTHIA 8 and Herwig 7) and with a Next-to-Leading-Order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics calculation, obtained with the POWHEG method and interfaced with PYTHIA 6 for the generation of the parton shower, fragmentation, hadronisation and underlying event.Comment: 29 pages, 8 captioned figures, 3 tables, authors from page 24, published version, figures at http://alice-publications.web.cern.ch/node/525

    Measurement of the inclusive J/ψ\psi polarization at forward rapidity in pp collisions at s=8\sqrt{s} = 8 TeV

    We report on the measurement of the inclusive J/ψ\psi polarization parameters in pp collisions at a center of mass energy s=8\sqrt{s} = 8 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.23 pb−1^{-1}. J/ψ\psi resonances are reconstructed in their di-muon decay channel in the rapidity interval 2.5<y<4.02.5 < y < 4.0 and over the transverse-momentum interval 2<pT<152 < p_{\rm T} < 15 GeV/cc. The three polarization parameters (λΞ\lambda_\theta, λφ\lambda_\varphi, λΞφ\lambda_{\theta\varphi}) are measured as a function of pTp_{\rm T} both in the helicity and Collins-Soper reference frames. The measured J/ψ\psi polarization parameters are found to be compatible with zero within uncertainties, contrary to expectations from all available predictions.     Heavy quarkonium: progress, puzzles, and opportunities

    A golden age for heavy quarkonium physics dawned a decade ago, initiated by the confluence of exciting advances in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and an explosion of related experimental activity. The early years of this period were chronicled in the Quarkonium Working Group (QWG) CERN Yellow Report (YR) in 2004, which presented a comprehensive review of the status of the field at that time and provided specific recommendations for further progress. However, the broad spectrum of subsequent breakthroughs, surprises, and continuing puzzles could only be partially anticipated. Since the release of the YR, the BESII program concluded only to give birth to BESIII; the BB-factories and CLEO-c flourished; quarkonium production and polarization measurements at HERA and the Tevatron matured; and heavy-ion collisions at RHIC have opened a window on the deconfinement regime. All these experiments leave legacies of quality, precision, and unsolved mysteries for quarkonium physics, and therefore beg for continuing investigations. The plethora of newly-found quarkonium-like states unleashed a flood of theoretical investigations into new forms of matter such as quark-gluon hybrids, mesonic molecules, and tetraquarks. Measurements of the spectroscopy, decays, production, and in-medium behavior of c\bar{c}, b\bar{b}, and b\bar{c} bound states have been shown to validate some theoretical approaches to QCD and highlight lack of quantitative success for others. The intriguing details of quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions that have emerged from RHIC have elevated the importance of separating hot- and cold-nuclear-matter effects in quark-gluon plasma studies.     Guillain-Barré syndrome during the Zika virus outbreak in Northeast Brazil: An observational cohort study

    Objective: To determine the clinical phenotype of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) after Zika virus (ZIKV) infection, the anti-glycolipid antibody signature, and the role of other circulating arthropod-borne viruses, we describe a cohort of GBS patients identified during ZIKV and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) outbreaks in Northeast Brazil. Methods: We prospectively recruited GBS patients from a regional neurology center in Northeast Brazil between December 2014 and February 2017. Serum and CSF were tested for ZIKV, CHIKV, and dengue virus (DENV), by RT-PCR and antibodies, and serum was tested for GBS-associated antibodies to glycolipids. Results: Seventy-one patients were identified. Forty-eight (68%) had laboratory evidence of a recent arbovirus infection; 25 (52%) ZIKV, 8 (17%) CHIKV, 1 (2%) DENV, and 14 (29%) ZIKV and CHIKV. Most patients with a recent arbovirus infection had motor and sensory symptoms (72%), a demyelinating electrophysiological subtype (67%) and a facial palsy (58%). Patients with a recent infection with ZIKV and CHIKV had a longer hospital admission and more frequent mechanical ventilation compared to the other patients. No specific anti-glycolipid antibody signature was identified in association with arbovirus infection, although significant antibody titres to GM1, GalC, LM1, and GalNAc-GD1a were found infrequently. Conclusion: A large proportion of cases had laboratory evidence of a recent infection with ZIKV or CHIKV, and recent infection with both viruses was found in almost one third of patients. Most patients with a recent arbovirus infection had a sensorimotor, demyelinating GBS. We did not find a specific anti-glycolipid antibody signature in association with arbovirus-related GBS

    NEOTROPICAL XENARTHRANS: a data set of occurrence of xenarthran species in the Neotropics

    Xenarthrans – anteaters, sloths, and armadillos – have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with 24 domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, ten anteaters, and six sloths. Our dataset includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data-paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the south of the USA, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to its austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n=5,941), and Cyclopes sp. has the fewest (n=240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n=11,588), and the least recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n=33). With regards to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n=962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n=12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other datasets of Neotropical Series which will become available very soon (i.e. Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, and Neotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure, habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possible with the Neotropical Xenarthrans dataset
