Storytelling Experiences by Millennial Tourists in UNESCO Heritage Centers
As principais
As experiências turísticas memoráveis fomentam
comportamentais diversificados.
permitam conhecer a comunidade local, a história, e património (EdgeResearch, 2017).
Traveling is an ephemeral way of living in another culture and learning about its customs
and traditions. Tourists increasingly seek to make their travels more authentic and
unforgettable and are more open to other socio-cultural contexts. They are no longer a
mere spectator, but an active participant in the tourism experience (Otto & Ritchie, 1996).
Tourism is indeed a set of moments, then portrayed in memories that keep tourists
connected to the destinations. The economy of experience is undoubtedly a growing
trend, justified by the globalization of information, by the democratization of culture, by
and by the urgency of living unique moments (Pine & Gilmore, 1998; Jelincic &
Mansfeld, 2019). Tourists want to know more about destinations, traditions and heritage
by looking for reliable sources of information. Learning and tourism have become in
dissociated elements, resulting in an exponential increase of cultural tourists with
different motivations: spiritual, intellectual and emotional, that define their profile as
tourists. The main cultural attractions of the destinations are located in the historical
centers. Here, monuments, heritage and story sharing are concentrated.
Telling stories is a product of cultural tourism, a means of communication, a mechanism
to promote the tourism potential of the destinations by fostering space conservation,
social awareness, knowledge sharing and the preservation of local traditions (Gonçalves,
Seabra, & Silva, 2017). Memorable tourist experiences foster strong connections with
destinations, making tourists want to return, relive past moments and in parallel, become
storytellers sharing their own experience. Storytelling is not limited to reporting events.
It helps tourists to connect with the visited places in a sensorial way, enabling a closer
relationship with the community, its residents and the local culture. Cultural tourists are
a very heterogenous segment, with diverse personalities and behavioral patterns.
Considering this factor, it was pertinent to adopt a generational approach, focusing
exclusively on the millennial generation. This group reveals a surprising interest in
visiting heritage and knowing the culture of the destinations. In their travels the
millennials opt for authentic experiences that enable them to get to know the local
community, history, and heritage (EdgeResearch, 2017).
The empirical study was carried out by conducting surveys in Historical Centers
recognized by UNESCO in Portugal mainland: Évora, Guimarães and Porto. The results
confirm the dimensions of experience: (1) sense, (2) feel, (3) think, (4) act, and (5) relate,
regarding the model of Schmitt (1999). However, the dimension think was not relevant
in the generation studied. This is understandable because millennials are more
experimental and prefer to live the moment to the fullest, through their senses and
sensations (Veiga, Santos, Águas, & Santos, 2017). Discussion centers on the study
findings and implications for cultural tourism, and tourism management that can help in
the creation of new marketing and communication strategies that enhance the dimensions
of the tourism experience. Lastly limitations and guidelines for future research are
presented
Leishmaniasis are a group of diseases caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania sp. In the Mediterranean Basin, Leishmania infantum is the main species causing visceral leishmaniasis, the most severe form of the disease, while L. major is one of the etiological agents of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Although it is considered that these
parasites have essentially clonal reproduction, in the last 20 years it has been described genetic recombination between different strains and species, with occurrence of natural hybrids in the Old and New World. Recently, in Portugal, for the first time, hybrid strains of L. infantum/L. major were isolated and identified.
The main goals of the present study were the search of "new species" of Leishmania and the "in vitro" behavior analysis of hybrid and parental strains of L. infantum and L. major.
In the first part of the work, sample culture and search of Leishmania sp. DNA in 229 canine bone marrow blood samples were performed, from an endemic region of Portugal, using different molecular markers (kDNA, ITS1 and SSU rRNA) and PCR protocols. No DNA of hybrid species was found, although it has been identified Leishmania sp. DNA in 45.85% (105/ 229) of samples including dogs with no clinical signs.
In the second part of the work, several "in vitro" tests were performed, using both, natural hybrid L. infantum/L. major and parental L. infantum, L. major strains. In normal growth conditions, a distinct growth pattern for each strain studied was observed. Under oxidative stress conditions, the highlight was a significant difference between the two hybrid strains studied. Under nutritional stress, the strains showed no differences. After in vitro susceptibility to Amphotericin B, all strains were susceptible, with inhibitory concentrations (IC50) between 0.21 and 1.15 μg/mL. After infection of monocytic cell lines, no statistically significant differences were observed in the rate and intensity of infection of the hybrid strains in comparison to the putative parents.
The obtained results contributed to a better understanding of the biological behavior of these natural hybrid L. infantum/L. major strains. They demonstrated an intermediate "in vitro" behavior compared to their parental strains. These results may serve as a basis for the development of other studies with these "new species", namely “in vivo”
pathogenicity studies and the role of known virulence biomarkers, allowing a potential prognostic of infection and evaluation of its epidemiological risk
The exponential growth of industry in the last years led to the development of new manufacturing techniques as to the improvement of existing ones, linking research focuses with the manufacturing needs. To meet industry needs within coatings development, it is revealed a bet in deposition processes by PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) and CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition), which have gained big significance in the last two decades with the imposition to abolish the electrodeposition processes, due to environmental and public safety and health matters. Due to the frequent use of coated parts not only in the plastics industry, but also in all metalworking industry, it was realized the importance of studying the chromium coating processes, through PVD - Sputtering, betting not only on the aesthetic aspect, but also in a possible alternative to hexavalent chromium, usually denominated by chromium 6 and namely applied in electrodeposition processes. Therefore, it is of great interest to study the development of new thin coatings, checking its adaptability to optical applications in automotive industry. In the current work, it was carried out the development of thin chromium coatings through Sputtering in polymeric parts. The initial analysis was performed over the deposition process, letting to study the appropriate parameterization for the required aesthetic, adhesion, and transmittance characteristics. In a second stage, it was studied the thickness and roughness aspects of the obtained coatings, performing an adhesin analysis through a Scratch-test equipment and evaluating the transmittance though spectrophotometry. In the final stage, it was applied a wider characterization, comprising all tests carried out previously, plus the tests in climatic chamber and of resistance to abrasion. The developed coatings were widely characterized, letting to take conclusions over its strengths and aspects that should be improved, such the resistance to climate changes
Lactose intolerance occurs when individuals who have an inefficient lactose digestion manifest symptom such as colic, pain, bloating or diarrhea when consuming milk and / or milk products. In North American countries, the prevalence of self-reported lactose intolerance is between 11% and 16%. Similar data for Brazil is not available. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of lactose intolerance in the adult population by self-report and to examine their dietary adaptations. Method: cross-sectional study with individuals, randomly selected, invited to answer a questionnaire. Results: The overall prevalence of self-reported lactose intolerance was 32.3% (n = 67). Of the total sample of individuals considered to be lactose intolerant, 92.5% (n = 62) were women and 7.5% (n = 5) were men. Most (97%) reduce or eliminate dairy products from their eating routine and less than 3% do not make this change. Conclusion: The prevalence of self-reported lactose intolerance was considerably higher than that reported in other studies, almost 1 in 3 Brazilian adults believe to be lactose intolerant, and many have limited their intake of milk and dairy products. It is important that health professionals advise individuals with self-reporting or diagnosis about an appropriate food intake to avoid nutritional deficiencies.
Effects of a home-based exercise program in body composition, abdominal fat and lipid profile in patients with coronary artery disease
Coronary artery disease and aging seems to be associated with a sedentary lifestyle, contributing to increased abdominal fat and consequently metabolic complications. The exercise can break this cycle by stimulating lipolysis and the use of fatty acids. In Europe there is still a lack of cardiac rehabilitation programmes in hospitals, therefore, this study aims to demonstrate the advantages of implementing home-based exercise programmes, as well as, their effects on cardiovascular prevention. This study analyzed the effects of a home-based exercise programme, in patients with coronary artery disease (myocardial infarction for 1 year), in body composition, abdominal fat, lipid profile.
An ongoing randomized controlled trial with a sample of 20 participants were randomly allocated to intervention (n = 10) and control groups (n = 10). Intervention group performed a specific exercise programme during 8 weeks, consisting of ten home based exercises taking into account flexibility, muscle endurance and strength as well as cardiovascular endurance.
Skinfolds thickness were measure to calculate the percentage of total fat: Skinfolds used were suprailiac, abdominal horizontal and vertical. Body mass index calculation and blood tests for lipidic profile were performed.
After eight weeks the intervention group decreased significantly the percentage of total fat (p < 0.05), the suprailiac skinfold (p < 0.05), the abdominal horizontal and vertical skinfold (p < 0.05) when compared with control group. In the intervention group it was observed after 8 weeks a significant decrease in body mass index, LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides.
Home-based exercise programme influenced body composition, abdominal fat and lipid profile. These results highlight the importance of implementing home based exercises that are easy and cheap to implement in cardiac patients, in order to promote health and reduce cardiovascular risk factors

Results: The sample is mainly female (84,3%), lives together, has an average age of 56.97 years, has the 4th school grade and is working on average 8h/day. The data reveal that the variables that influenced the quality of life are: age, employment status, the "way they live"; practicing physical exercise and the pain intensity, being this last the one that represents the largest association. Conclusion: The results support the multidimensionality and variability in the quality of life of patients with FM and show the need for health professionals to promote intervention programs in the community, in order to implement intervention strategies that minimize pain, functional disability and promote the patients with fibromyalgia quality of life.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The association of the Mediterranean diet and exercise appears to have a protective role, reducing cardiovascular risk. This study investigated the effects of education sessions on the Mediterranean diet and an exercise program in modifying eating behaviors, body composition and abdominal fat.
An experimental study was performed on 20 subjects with known coronary heart disease randomly assigned to experimental (n=10) and control (n=10) groups. Both groups received education sessions on the Mediterranean diet, but the experimental group also followed an eight-week program of specific exercises. A semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire was administered to analyze food intake, bioimpedance was used to measure weight, fat mass and lean mass, and waist circumference was measured to calculate waist-to-height ratio.
After eight weeks, protein (p<0.05) and cholesterol (p<0.05) intake in the experimental group had decreased significantly compared with the control group. Between the beginning and end of the study, there were significant decreases in the control group in carbohydrate (p<0.05) and saturated fat intake (p<0.05). In both groups the percentage of total fat (p<0.05) and fat mass (p<0.05) was significantly decreased. In the experimental group the waist-to-height ratio was significantly reduced (p<0.05).
The Mediterranean diet reduced carbohydrate and saturated fat intake, reflected in reduced fat mass. The association of the exercise program showed additional benefits in reduction of protein and cholesterol intake and abdominal fat.
The contribution of tourism to the Portuguese economy: comparison between 2019 and 2022 (pre-Covid-19 and post-Covid-19)
Tourism has developed in the last decade (2011/2020), allowing the growth of different destinations. Therefore,
the main objective of this article is to understand the main characteristics of tourism supply and demand in
Portugal and identify its importance and contribution to the Portuguese economy, through the comparison of data
from 2019 with that from 2022 (pre-Covid-19 and post-Covid-19).
In this article, we opted for a qualitative methodology, in a systematic review of the literature, and a quantitative
methodology, in the analysis and interpretation of the various official statistics on Portuguese tourism.
Regarding the results, the importance of the sector can be seen in the comparison of overnight stays from January
to September of 2019 and 2022, where there was an increase in demand. Regarding revenues in the same period
(January to September), it shows that in 2022 these were 14.4 billion euros, while those recorded in 2019 were
12.66 billion euros. In 2022 it was found that the United Kingdom is the country that stands out most in terms of
international overnight stays in Portugal, and thus the one that contributed most to tourism revenue.
We conclude that there was, in 2022 as compared to 2019, a significant growth in revenue that shows a positive
relationship between the tourism sector and its impact on the Portuguese economy.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
