Current societies are configured in such a way that relations with others are less defined and social conditions are complex and often nontransparent (e.g. Holmes, 2015; Bauman, 2003). There is never-ending uncertainty over how to act and how to feel. Set rules on how to feel no longer exist (Hochschild, 1983; Neckel, 2005; Wouters, 1999). These conditions also pose a challenge in migration processes: clear demarcations and unwavering sense of belonging are often not possible “just like that” (Albrecht, 2016, p. 1). This implies challenges for the individual. To this effect, emotions become increasingly important in navigating one’s own path through uncertain conditions (Holmes, 2015). The following paper addresses how emotional reflexivity processes are relevant for individuals in these situations. As such, emotional reflexivity must be defined as a process of internal adjustment between emotional activity and emotional passivity. The result of this process is visible through a level of action which can also consist in taking no action at all (Helfferich, 2012). Therefore, the paper suggests a modified definition of the terms agency and “emotional reflexivity”. The definition of emotional reflexivity includes several aspects of Holmes’s (2015; 2010) and Burkitt’s (2012) former definitions and expands on them. Emotional reflexivity – internal adjustments of emotional activity and passivity – will be illustrated using empirical data on current processes of migration to Germany.

    Get PDF

Feeling the Temperature of the Room: Unobtrusive Thermal Display of Engagement during Group Communication

Thermal signals have been explored in HCI for emotion-elicitation and enhancing two-person communication, showing that temperature invokes social and emotional signals in individuals. Yet, extending these findings to group communication is missing. We investigated how thermal signals can be used to communicate group affective states in a hybrid meeting scenario to help people feel connected over a distance. We conducted a lab study (N=20 participants) and explored wrist-worn thermal feedback to communicate audience emotions. Our results show that thermal feedback is an effective method of conveying audience engagement without increasing workload and can help a presenter feel more in tune with the audience. We outline design implications for real-world wearable social thermal feedback systems for both virtual and in-person communication that support group affect communication and social connectedness. Thermal feedback has the potential to connect people across distances and facilitate more effective and dynamic communication in multiple contexts.Comment: In IMWUT 202

Crisponi syndrome/cold-induced sweating syndrome type 2: Reprogramming of CS/CISS2 individual derived fibroblasts into three clones of one iPSC line

Crisponi syndrome/cold-induced sweating syndrome type 2 (CS/CISS2) is a rare disease with severe dysfunctions of thermoregulatory processes. CS/CISS2 individuals suffer from recurrent episodes of hyperthermia in the neonatal period and paradoxical sweating at cold ambient temperatures in adolescence. Variants in CLCF1 (cardiotrophin-like-cytokine 1) cause CS/CISS2. Here, we summarize the generation of three clones of one stem cell line (iPSC) of a CS/CISS2 individual carrying the CLCF1 variant c.321C>G on both alleles. These patient derived iPSC clones show a normal karyotype, several pluripotency markers, and the ability to differentiate into the three germ layers

Spherical collapse of dark energy with an arbitrary sound speed

We consider a generic type of dark energy fluid, characterised by a constant equation of state parameter w and sound speed c_s, and investigate the impact of dark energy clustering on cosmic structure formation using the spherical collapse model. Along the way, we also discuss in detail the evolution of dark energy perturbations in the linear regime. We find that the introduction of a finite sound speed into the picture necessarily induces a scale-dependence in the dark energy clustering, which in turn affects the dynamics of the spherical collapse in a scale-dependent way. As with other, more conventional fluids, we can define a Jeans scale for the dark energy clustering, and hence a Jeans mass M_J for the dark matter which feels the effect of dark energy clustering via gravitational interactions. For bound objects (halos) with masses M >> M_J, the effect of dark energy clustering is maximal. For those with M << M_J, the dark energy component is effectively homogeneous, and its role in the formation of these structures is reduced to its effects on the Hubble expansion rate. To compute quantitatively the virial density and the linearly extrapolated threshold density, we use a quasi-linear approach which is expected to be valid up to around the Jeans mass. We find an interesting dependence of these quantities on the halo mass M, given some w and c_s. The dependence is the strongest for masses lying in the vicinity of M ~ M_J. Observing this M-dependence will be a tell-tale sign that dark energy is dynamic, and a great leap towards pinning down its clustering properties.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, matches version published in JCA

    Low‐dimensional embeddings for interaction design

    Get PDF
Physical interactions with the real world have many degrees of freedom, which has led to the development of novel input devices with a multitude of sensors to capture increasingly high‐dimensional data. This high dimensionality makes the design of interactive systems more complex. Herein, the use of autoencoder‐based dimensionality reduction is explored to simplify the design process. For this purpose, a data glove equipped with accelerometers is used to record high‐dimensional hand movement data that are thereafter reduced to 2D embeddings using autoencoders. The exploration and evaluation of the resulting embeddings suggest that autoencoders can be used to create meaningful low‐dimensional representations of complex human movement. The characteristics generality, variability, connectivity, and distinguishability are established and a guideline is provided for assessing low‐dimensional embeddings. Referring to these characteristics, system engineers can evaluate different input modalities and gestures for their specific interaction task. Further, a framework is outlined for designing and evaluating gesture interaction in the low‐dimensional space. By demonstrating the exemplary design of the interaction with a virtual lever, this research gives system engineers a template for interaction design in the low‐dimensional space

Severe, very early onset preeclampsia in a Covid 19-positive woman with a twin pregnancy presenting with a hydatidiform mole and coexisting normal fetus: a case report

Cases of hydatidiform moles with a coexisting fetus are sparse and patients are at high risk for severe complications. Patients and physicians often face the dilemma of the wish to continue pregnancy until viability of the fetus while the risk for maternal complications increases. We present an educational case of a twin pregnancy presenting with a hydatidiform mole and coexisting normal fetus with a placenta praevia. The patient developed severe, early onset preeclampsia with beginning HELLP-syndrome and was tested Covid-19 positive in the further course. Termination of pregnancy was conducted via caesarean section at 18 + 6 weeks of pregnancy. Histopathology and genetic analysis confirmed a complete hydatidiform mole next to a normal placenta. Close follow-up examinations were conducted and showed normal findings including ß HCG levels normalizing within 5 months. This case combines several rare, difficult and severe medical conditions and demonstrates how an individualized therapy by an interdisciplinary team covering a highly sensitive topic was developed in a situation where no guidelines exist
