    Signal Traits and Oxidative Stress: A Comparative Study across Populations with Divergent Signals

    Diverging populations often shift patterns of signal use – a process that can contribute to reproductive isolation and speciation. Yet it is not clear why most traits gain or lose signal value during divergence. One reason this could occur is because changes in the relationship between signals and relevant physiological parameters degrade the reliability of a signal, or even change its underlying information content. Here we test the hypothesis that the relationship between signal trait elaboration and a central component of organismal health – oxidative stress – differs across closely related populations that have diverged in signal use and preferences. In the recently diverged barn swallow subspecies complex (Hirundo rustica, Family: Hirundinidae), different populations use different traits as sexual signals. Two of these traits, ventral breast plumage color and tail streamer length, differ markedly between North American H. r. erythrogaster and European H. r. rustica. Despite this divergence, variation in ventral plumage color was similarly associated with measures of oxidative damage across both populations. However, the directionality of these relationships differed between the sexes: darker male barn swallows had higher levels of plasma oxidative damage than their lighter counterparts, while the opposite relationship was seen in females. In contrast, relationships between tail streamer length and measures of oxidative stress were not consistent across populations. Some analyses indicated that in European H. r. rustica, where males bearing elongated streamers are preferred as mates, longer-streamered males were more oxidatively stressed; however, the opposite pattern was suggested in North American H. r. erythrogaster. Tail streamer length was not associated with measures of oxidative stress in females of either population. Differences in the physiological state of stronger signalers across populations and between the sexes may be related to costs or constraints on signal elaboration (e.g., biochemical pathways associated with melanogenesis), or reflect differences in how signal-mediated social interactions influence oxidative stress. Overall, our results suggest that while some phenotypic traits appear to be capable of conveying similar physiological information regardless of their use as signals, divergence in other phenotypic traits may be associated with shifts in their information content

    Weblog-Kommunikation und Öffentlichkeit: eine Untersuchung am Beispiel des Bundestagswahlkampfs 2005

    "Innerhalb des Internet breiten sich neue Medientechnologien aus. Weblogs und Wikis, aber auch Anbieter wie der Online-Fotodienst "flickr" ermöglichen es den Nutzern, Inhalte schnell und zu geringen Kosten einem potentiellen Massenpublikum zur VerfĂŒgung zu stellen. Ihre Benutzung erfordert kaum medienspezifische Kenntnisse, und sie unterstĂŒtzen die Zusammenarbeit der Nutzer bei der Erstellung vernetzter Inhalte. Wie verĂ€ndern diese neuen Medien die Kommunikation? BefĂŒrworter der Entwicklungen loben die Entstehung einer diskursiveren Form der Öffentlichkeit aus, in der Berichte nicht aus einer Quelle stammen, sondern aus der Vernetzung vieler einzelner BeitrĂ€ge resultieren. Dagegen mahnen die Erfahrungen mit anderen Formen der computervermittelten Kommunikation zur Vorsicht, denn Merkmale traditioneller Medien wie die Gatekeeper-Funktion haben sich auch im Internet als relevant herausgestellt. Dieser Beitrag untersucht empirisch anhand eines Samples von 317 Weblogs, die sich mit dem Bundestagswahlkampf 2005 befassen, wie Akteure mit den neuen medialen Möglichkeiten umgehen und welche Kommunikationsmuster sich dabei etablieren. Er analysiert mit Mitteln der sozialen Netzwerkanalyse die Vernetzungsstrukturen zwischen den Weblogs, zeichnet unterschiedliche Nutzungsweisen durch eine inhaltliche Analyse nach und untersucht an einem Fallbeispiel, welche Dynamik sich aus der intensiven Beobachtung von Kommunikation innerhalb der BlogosphĂ€re ergibt und welche Mechanismen dabei wirksam werden. Die Ergebnisse erlauben eine EinschĂ€tzung darĂŒber, wie sich die computervermittelte Kommunikation verĂ€ndert und welche gesellschaftlichen Effekte diese neuen Medien der Kommunikation tatsĂ€chlich nach sich ziehen.     "Mit dem Bundestagswahlkampf 2005 entstand in der deutschsprachigen BlogosphĂ€re ein neues 'Netz im Netz'. Politikerinnen und Politiker, Journalistinnen und Journalisten sowie interessierte BĂŒrgerinnen und BĂŒrger begannen gleichermaßen damit, in Weblogs ĂŒber die Wahl im Besonderen und Politik im Allgemeinen zu posten, Sachverhalte zu kommentieren und vor allem auch: Personen, Themen und Meinungen zu diskutieren. Die vorliegende Forschungsnotiz informiert ĂŒber Methodik und erste Ergebnisse einer Studie zu Weblogs im Bundestagswahlkampf 2005, welche derzeit am Arbeitsbereich Technikbewertung und Technikgestaltung der Technischen UniversitĂ€t Hamburg-Harburg durchgefĂŒhrt wird.     Online Diskurse als Instrument politischer Partizipation: Evaluation der Hamburger Internetdiskussion zum Leitbild 'Wachsende Stadt'

    'Seit langem diskutieren Wissenschaftler die Frage, welche Auswirkungen das Internet auf das politische System und demokratische Verfahren haben wird. HĂ€ufig ist in diesem Zusammenhang eine StĂ€rkung demokratischer Mitbestimmung, grĂ¶ĂŸere BĂŒrgernĂ€he und eine erhöhte Transparenz politischer Entscheidungsprozesse prognostiziert worden. Doch wĂ€hrend inzwischen vor allem die Digitalisierung von VerwaltungsablĂ€ufen weiter voranschreitet ('eAdministration'), ist die sogenannte elektronische Demokratie ('eDemocracy') bisher hinter den optimistischen Prognosen zurĂŒck geblieben. Anhand eines Fallbeispiels wird in diesem Beitrag die Frage untersucht, inwiefern Online-Diskurse zur Realisierung elektronischer Demokratie beitragen, und ob sie den anspruchsvollen Erwartungen an den Einsatz neuer Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien entsprechen können. Bei dem Fallbeispiel handelt es sich um eine Online-Diskussion, mit der im November 2002 Hamburger BĂŒrgerinnen und BĂŒrger im Rahmen eines Ideenwettbewerbs im Internet an der Gestaltung der stĂ€dtischen Politik beteiligt wurden.     Contextual influences on physical activity and eating habits -options for action on the community level

    Background: This conceptual paper aims to illustrate the ways in which communities are able to advance health improvements on a population level. Outcome measures may include increased physical activity and healthier eating habits in particular, as well as an improved health-related quality of life and social cohesion as more generic outcomes. Main body: The paper begins by asking initial questions: Why did previous health-specific interventions only show moderate effects on an individual level and mixed effects on a population level? What is the added value of a community-based public health perspective compared to the traditional biomedical perspective when it comes to prevention? Why are we living the way we are living? Why do we eat what we eat? Why do we move the way we move? Subsequently, we illustrate the broad spectrum of contextual interventions available to communities. These can have geographical and technological as well as economic, political, normative and attitude-specific dimensions. It is shown that communities have a strong influence on health-related contexts and decision-making of adults, adolescents and children. In addition contextual characteristics, effects, mediators, moderators and consequences relevant for health can differ greatly between age groups. Both small-scale settings and overarching sectors possess physical, economic, political and sociocultural characteristics that can be proactively influenced by community decision-makers in the sense of a “health in all policies”-strategy. Short conclusion: After presenting various interdisciplinary approaches to community-based health interventions, the manuscript closes with the following core message: Successful community-based health promotion strategies consist of multilevel – multicomponent interventions on the micro, meso and macro-level-environments

    Identification of starting points to promote health and wellbeing at the community level – a qualitative study

    Background: As health is influenced by the social, economic and environmental conditions in which individuals live, local communities are an ideal setting to promote health and wellbeing. However, up to now various health promotion interventions at the community level have had limited success, perhaps related to an incomplete understanding of local contexts and priorities. We therefore aimed to develop a broader and deeper understanding of topics or issues that were most salient to residents of a South-West German community by exploring their perceptions of needs, challenges, barriers and existing resources related to health and well-being. Methods: As an initial step of a multi-year community-based participatory research project, we conducted semi-structured interviews with key informants (n = 30) from various community settings (e.g., child care, elderly care, businesses, non-profit organizations, village councils, and local government). The terms “health” and “wellbeing” were included in the stem of each question in the semi-structured interview guide to enable a focus on related perceived needs, challenges, barriers and existing resources. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim and analyzed using qualitative content analysis techniques. Results: Themes emerging from our interviews appeared to center primarily in three distinct areas: natural resources and built environment, access to services, and social cohesion including subthemes on the importance of social engagement and volunteerism, sense of community, and shared identity. Conclusions: That health and wellbeing were not identified explicitly as a priority by key informants suggests that these should not be presented as the primary focus of a community-wide initiative. Instead themes with a higher priority should be addressed in ways that can lead to better health and wellbeing as a secondary goal

    Framework and baseline examination of the German National Cohort (NAKO)

    The German National Cohort (NAKO) is a multidisciplinary, population-based prospective cohort study that aims to investigate the causes of widespread diseases, identify risk factors and improve early detection and prevention of disease. Specifically, NAKO is designed to identify novel and better characterize established risk and protection factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases, musculoskeletal diseases, respiratory and infectious diseases in a random sample of the general population. Between 2014 and 2019, a total of 205,415 men and women aged 19–74 years were recruited and examined in 18 study centres in Germany. The baseline assessment included a face-to-face interview, self-administered questionnaires and a wide range of biomedical examinations. Biomaterials were collected from all participants including serum, EDTA plasma, buffy coats, RNA and erythrocytes, urine, saliva, nasal swabs and stool. In 56,971 participants, an intensified examination programme was implemented. Whole-body 3T magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 30,861 participants on dedicated scanners. NAKO collects follow-up information on incident diseases through a combination of active follow-up using self-report via written questionnaires at 2–3 year intervals and passive follow-up via record linkages. All study participants are invited for re-examinations at the study centres in 4–5 year intervals. Thereby, longitudinal information on changes in risk factor profiles and in vascular, cardiac, metabolic, neurocognitive, pulmonary and sensory function is collected. NAKO is a major resource for population-based epidemiology to identify new and tailored strategies for early detection, prediction, prevention and treatment of major diseases for the next 30 years.
