Climate change, in the framework of the constructal law

Here we present a simple and transparent alternative to the complex models of Earth thermal behavior under time-changing conditions. We show the one-to-one relationship between changes in atmospheric properties and time-dependent changes in temperature and its distribution on Earth. The model accounts for convection and radiation, thermal inertia and changes in albedo (ρ) and greenhouse factor (γ). The constructal law is used as the principle that governs the evolution of flow configuration in time, and provides closure for the equations that describe the model. In the first part of the paper, the predictions are tested against the current thermal state of Earth. Next, the model showed that for two time-dependent scenarios, (δρ = 0.002; δγ = 0.011) and (δρ = 0.002; δγ = 0.005) the predicted equatorial and polar temperature increases and the time scales are (Δ<i>T</i>H = 1.16 K; Δ<i>T</i>L = 1.11 K; 104 years) and (0.41 K; 0.41 K; 57 years), respectively. In the second part, a continuous model of temperature variation was used to predict the thermal response of the Earth's surface for changes bounded by δρ = δγ and δρ = −δγ. The results show that the global warming amplitudes and time scales are consistent with those obtained for δρ = 0.002 and δγ = 0.005. The poleward heat current reaches its maximum in the vicinity of 35° latitude, accounting for the position of the Ferrel cell between the Hadley and Polar Cells

RadialPheno: A tool for near-surface phenology analysis through radial layouts

Premise Increasingly, researchers studying plant phenology are exploring novel technologies to remotely observe plant changes over time. The increasing use of phenocams to monitor leaf phenology, based on the analysis of indices extracted from sequences of daily digital vegetation images, has demanded the development of appropriate tools for data visualization and analysis. Here, we describe RadialPheno, a tool that uses radial layouts to represent time series from digital repeat photographs, and applies them to the analysis of leafing patterns and leaf exchange strategies of different vegetations. Methods and Results We developed a web tool, RadialPheno, provided with the R and Shiny environments, which uses radial visual structures to represent cyclical multidimensional temporal data associated with digital image time series. We demonstrate the application of our methods and tool for a savanna vegetation phenology in the Brazilian Cerrado. We visually represented the greenness index extracted from sequential imagery using the RadialPheno tool. Conclusions RadialPheno was successfully applied for the visualization and interpretation of individual, species, and community long-term leafing phenology data associated with near-surface phenological observations of Cerrado vegetation. RadialPheno was also effective for intercomparisons of ground-based direct visual observations and camera-derived phenology observations

Although laminitis has been reported in pigs, distal phalanx rotation detected by radiography has not been described yet in this species. Accordingly, this paper describes three cases of laminitis in sows from a Brazilian commercial swine unit, and a preliminary study on laminitis in culled sows from a slaughterhouse, based on radiographic evaluation. A farrow-to-finish unit located in a central swine production area in southern Brazil showed a history of locomotor alterations in sows. Three lame sows were selected for examination. They displayed typical clinical signs of laminitis. Their feet were radiographed, and all three showed distal phalanx deviation in at least one digit. In order to find out the possibility of laminitis occurrence in other farms, thirteen hind and five front feet from lame sows were collected in a slaughterhouse, and radiographed in lateromedial position. Eleven sows (61%) showed distal phalanx rotation of the third or the fourth digit, whereas eight of them (44%) showed this alteration in both digits. Osteolysis in five sows (28%) and periosteal proliferation in another four sows (11%) were observed. In conclusion, laminitis with distal phalanx rotation is present in Brazilian herds, and radiographic analysis may be an important diagnosis tool for the disease in vivo or at slaughterhouses.

Loss of tenomodulin expression is a risk factor for age‐related intervertebral disc degeneration

The intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is thought to be closely related to ingrowth of new blood vessels. However, the impact of anti-angiogenic factors in the maintenance of IVD avascularity remains unknown. Tenomodulin (Tnmd) is a tendon/ligament-specific marker and anti-angiogenic factor with abundant expression in the IVD. It is still unclear whether Tnmd contributes to the maintenance of IVD homeostasis, acting to inhibit vascular ingrowth into this normally avascular tissue. Herein, we investigated whether IVD degeneration could be induced spontaneously by the absence of Tnmd. Our results showed that Tnmd was expressed in an age-dependent manner primarily in the outer annulus fibrous (OAF) and it was downregulated at 6 months of age corresponding to the early IVD degeneration stage in mice. Tnmd knockout (Tnmd(-)(/)(-)) mice exhibited more rapid progression of age-related IVD degeneration. These signs include smaller collagen fibril diameter, markedly lower compressive stiffness, reduced multiple IVD- and tendon/ligament-related gene expression, induced angiogenesis, and macrophage infiltration in OAF, as well as more hypertrophic-like chondrocytes in the nucleus pulposus. In addition, Tnmd and chondromodulin I (Chm1, the only homologous gene to Tnmd) double knockout (Tnmd(-)(/)(-)Chm1(-)(/)(-)) mice displayed not only accelerated IVD degeneration, but also ectopic bone formation of IVD. Lastly, the absence of Tnmd in OAF-derived cells promoted p65 and matrix metalloproteinases upregulation, and increased migratory capacity of human umbilical vein endothelial cells. In sum, our data provide clear evidences that Tnmd acts as an angiogenic inhibitor in the IVD homeostasis and protects against age-related IVD degeneration. Targeting Tnmd may represent a novel therapeutic strategy for attenuating age-related IVD degeneration
