This article is a summary of the documents produced by the Iberoamerican Network of Digital Communication (Red ICOD in Spanish) in the context of the «Digital Communicators» project of the ALFA Programme (EU). The main objective of the ICOD network was to develop proposals for accelerating the adaptation of communication studies in the new digital context. In this sense the network analysed study programs and compared the situation of the ICOD network countries (Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Portugal, France, Italy and Spain). The network also developed a research to define the profile of the communication professional in the digital age, that concluded with the creation of a map of skills. Finally, the network analysed different case-histories to exemplify the application of digital technology in communication studies

Transmedia Storytelling: Implicit Consumers, Narrative Worlds, and Branding in Contemporary Media Production

    Get PDF
Many concepts have been developed to describe the convergence of media, languages, and formats in contemporary media systems. This article is a theoretical reflection on “transmedia storytelling” from a perspective that integrates semiotics and narratology in the context of media studies. After dealing with the conceptual chaos around transmedia storytelling, the article analyzes how these new multimodal narrative structures create different implicit consumers and construct a narrative world. The analysis includes a description of the multimedia textual structure created around the Fox television series 24. Finally, the article analyzes transmedia storytelling from the perspective of a semiotics of branding

Online brands: Branding, possible worlds, and interactive grammars

This paper proposes to reflect from a semiotic perspective on the transformation that brands have undergone since the rise of the Internet. After a brief theoretical introduction to digital communication and the semiotics of brands, the case of the Google brand is analyzed by applying concepts of generative and interpretive semiotics. The paper holds that the iconic and linguistic enunciations are secondary with respect to interaction. In digital media interaction — the interactive experience that the Internet user lives — is a fundamental component of the hypermedia cocktail and occupies a central position in the brand building process. The article concludes with some of the questions and special characteristics raised by so-called eBranding

    Get PDF

PRETZEL: Opening the Black Box of Machine Learning Prediction Serving Systems

Machine Learning models are often composed of pipelines of transformations. While this design allows to efficiently execute single model components at training time, prediction serving has different requirements such as low latency, high throughput and graceful performance degradation under heavy load. Current prediction serving systems consider models as black boxes, whereby prediction-time-specific optimizations are ignored in favor of ease of deployment. In this paper, we present PRETZEL, a prediction serving system introducing a novel white box architecture enabling both end-to-end and multi-model optimizations. Using production-like model pipelines, our experiments show that PRETZEL is able to introduce performance improvements over different dimensions; compared to state-of-the-art approaches PRETZEL is on average able to reduce 99th percentile latency by 5.5x while reducing memory footprint by 25x, and increasing throughput by 4.7x.Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, 13th USENIX Symposium on Operating Systems Design and Implementation (OSDI), 201

    Highgate Cemetery

The famous Highgate Cemetery in London has stimulated people’s imaginations for over 150 years. Accompanied by an introduction to the history of the cemetery, this book provides fourteen in-depth articles which describe and analyse the site of Highgate Cemetery and the practices and images that have been both linked to it and provoked by it. These articles highlight different aspects, including the cemetery’s scenic and architectural setting, the use of religious signs and symbols on its gravestones, the interplay between its parkland environment and the representations of nature on its monuments, its past and contemporary social and religious meanings as well as its depictions in literature, film and guided tours. The articles provide new and surprising insights into one of London’s most intriguing sites. With contributions by Dolores Zoé Bertschinger, Carla Danani, Natalie Fritz, Anna-Katharina Höpflinger, Ann Jeffers, Marie-Therese Mäder, Alexander Darius Ornella, Niels Penke, Daria Pezzoli-Olgiati, Sean Ryan, Alberto Saviello, Baldassare Scolari, Paola von Wyss-Giacosa, Michael Ulrich The famous Highgate Cemetery in London has stimulated people’s imaginations for over 150 years.

    Get PDF
The research, here presented, proposes a critical analysis of instrumental approaches in Human-Computer Interaction (HCJ). From a semiotic point of view, interfaces are not "tools" that "disappear" during interaction, but rather complex devices that constraint users to co-operate with designers and to contract with them for the sense of the interaction process

In this article, after indicating some theoretical inputs for the development of a semiotics of gastronomy, we propose an analysis of the Catalan nova cuina. This new gastronomy - characterized by a extreme experimentation internationally represented by Ferran Adrià - turns out to be an interesting object of semiotic study. At the end of the article we propose some refections about the nova cuina from the perspective of the brands
