Discovery of an optical counterpart to the hyperluminous X-ray source in ESO 243-49
The existence of black holes of masses ~ 10^2-10^5 Msun has important
implications for the formation and evolution of star clusters and supermassive
black holes. One of the strongest candidates to date is the hyperluminous X-ray
source HLX1, possibly located in the S0-a galaxy ESO243-49, but the lack of an
identifiable optical counterpart had hampered its interpretation. Using the
Magellan telescope, we have discovered an unresolved optical source with R =
(23.80 +/- 0.25) mag and V = (24.5 +/- 0.3) mag within HLX1's positional error
circle. This implies an average X-ray/optical flux ratio ~ 500. Taking the same
distance as ESO243-49, we obtain an intrinsic brightness M_R = (-11.0 +/- 0.3)
mag, comparable to that of a massive globular cluster. Alternatively, the
optical source is consistent with a main-sequence M star in the Galactic halo
(for example an M4.4 star at ~ 2.5 kpc). We also examined the properties of
ESO243-49 by combining Swift/UVOT observations with stellar population
modelling. We found that the overall emission is dominated by a ~5 Gyr old
stellar population, but the UV emission at ~2000 Ang is mostly due to ongoing
star-formation at a rate of ~ 0.03 Msun/yr. The UV emission is more intense (at
least a 9-sigma enhancement above the mean) North East of the nucleus, in the
same quadrant as HLX1. With the combined optical and X-ray measurements, we put
constraints on the nature of HLX1. We rule out a foreground star and a
background AGN. Two alternative scenarios are still viable. HLX1 could be an
accreting intermediate-mass black hole in a star cluster, which may itself be
the stripped nucleus of a dwarf galaxy that passed through ESO243-49, an event
which might have caused the current episode of star formation. Or, it could be

Does HBOC-201 (Hemopure) Affect Platelet Function in Orthopedic Surgery: A Single-Site Analysis from a Multicenter Study
HBOC-201, Hemoglobin glutamer-250 (bovine), (Biopure Corp., Cambridge, MA) has been studied in an international, multicenter, pivotal Phase III trial. A subset analysis of use of blood products indicated that the HBOC-201 group required no more than the packed red blood cell (PRBC) group and was limited to less than 6% in both treatment groups. In a subset analysis from one site, platelet function using PFA-100 was assessed before and after transfusion, and compared those receiving HBOC-201 versus PRBC. After initial IRB approval, patient consent for the Phase III trial and blood draws for PFA-100, an additional IRB exemption for retrospective chart review was obtained. cEPI and cADP means were compared at seven time periods: true baseline(before starting surgery and anesthesia), before transfusion, after transfusion, 1 day, 2 days, 3 to 9 days and 21 or more days after transfusion. Twenty-seven (HBOC: n = 12, PRBC: n = 15) subjects were studied. Comparing data from before transfusion and baseline did not show statistically significant differences in any of cEPI or cADP measurements. cEPI means for the HBOC-201 group increased after transfusion compared to the true baseline (P = 0.01), before transfusion (P = 0.0004) and day 1 after transfusion (P = 0.002). cADP means for the HBOC-201 group were greater after transfusion compared to the true baseline (P = 0.05) and before transfusion (P = 0.005). In the PRBC group there were no significant difference in cEPI and cADP means between all of the time periods. Our study shows that HBOC-201 causes mild platelet dysfunction. Although there were significant changes after HBOC infusion and cEPI and cADP mean values were above the upper normal limit, they did not reach the non-closure time. Further controlled studies are needed to establish definitively the effects that HBOC-201 has on platelet function in patients
Hom-Lie color algebra structures
This paper introduces the notion of Hom-Lie color algebra, which is a natural
general- ization of Hom-Lie (super)algebras. Hom-Lie color algebras include
also as special cases Lie (super) algebras and Lie color algebras. We study the
homomorphism relation of Hom-Lie color algebras, and construct new algebras of
such kind by a \sigma-twist. Hom-Lie color admissible algebras are also defined
and investigated. They are finally classified via G-Hom-associative color
algebras, where G is a subgroup of the symmetric group S_3.Comment: 16 page
Computational fluid dynamics modeling of symptomatic intracranial atherosclerosis may predict risk of stroke recurrence.
BackgroundPatients with symptomatic intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS) of ≥ 70% luminal stenosis are at high risk of stroke recurrence. We aimed to evaluate the relationships between hemodynamics of ICAS revealed by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models and risk of stroke recurrence in this patient subset.MethodsPatients with a symptomatic ICAS lesion of 70-99% luminal stenosis were screened and enrolled in this study. CFD models were reconstructed based on baseline computed tomographic angiography (CTA) source images, to reveal hemodynamics of the qualifying symptomatic ICAS lesions. Change of pressures across a lesion was represented by the ratio of post- and pre-stenotic pressures. Change of shear strain rates (SSR) across a lesion was represented by the ratio of SSRs at the stenotic throat and proximal normal vessel segment, similar for the change of flow velocities. Patients were followed up for 1 year.ResultsOverall, 32 patients (median age 65; 59.4% males) were recruited. The median pressure, SSR and velocity ratios for the ICAS lesions were 0.40 (-2.46-0.79), 4.5 (2.2-20.6), and 7.4 (5.2-12.5), respectively. SSR ratio (hazard ratio [HR] 1.027; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.004-1.051; P = 0.023) and velocity ratio (HR 1.029; 95% CI, 1.002-1.056; P = 0.035) were significantly related to recurrent territorial ischemic stroke within 1 year by univariate Cox regression, respectively with the c-statistics of 0.776 (95% CI, 0.594-0.903; P = 0.014) and 0.776 (95% CI, 0.594-0.903; P = 0.002) in receiver operating characteristic analysis.ConclusionsHemodynamics of ICAS on CFD models reconstructed from routinely obtained CTA images may predict subsequent stroke recurrence in patients with a symptomatic ICAS lesion of 70-99% luminal stenosis
Depression and Oral FTC/TDF Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Among Men and Transgender Women Who Have Sex With Men (MSM/TGW).
We conducted a longitudinal and cross-sectional analysis of depressive symptomology in iPrEx, a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of daily, oral FTC/TDF HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in men and transgender women who have sex with men. Depression-related adverse events (AEs) were the most frequently reported severe or life-threatening AEs and were not associated with being randomized to the FTC/TDF arm (152 vs. 144 respectively OR 0.66 95 % CI 0.35-1.25). Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D) and a four questions suicidal ideation scale scores did not differ by arm. Participants reporting forced sex at anal sexual debut had higher CES-D scores (coeff: 3.23; 95 % CI 1.24-5.23) and were more likely to have suicidal ideation (OR 2.2; 95 % CI 1.09-4.26). CES-D scores were higher among people reporting non-condom receptive anal intercourse (ncRAI) (OR 1.46; 95 % CI 1.09-1.94). We recommend continuing PrEP during periods of depression in conjunction with provision of mental health services
HIP 38939B: A New Benchmark T Dwarf in the Galactic Plane Discovered with Pan-STARRS1
We report the discovery of a wide brown dwarf companion to the mildly
metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-0.24), low galactic latitude (b = 1.88 deg) K4V star HIP
38939. The companion was discovered by its common proper motion with the
primary and its red optical (Pan-STARRS1) and blue infrared (2MASS) colors. It
has a projected separation of 1630 AU and a near-infrared spectral type of
T4.5. As such it is one of only three known companions to a main sequence star
which have early/mid-T spectral types (the others being HN Peg B and eps Indi
B). Using chromospheric activity we estimate an age for the primary of
900{+1900,-600} Myr. This value is also in agreement with the age derived from
the star's weak ROSAT detection. Comparison with evolutionary models for this
age range indicates that HIP 38939B falls in the mass range 38+/-20 Mjup with
an effective temperature range of 1090+/-60 K. Fitting our spectrum with
atmospheric models gives a best fitting temperature of 1100 K. We include our
object in an analysis of the population of benchmark T dwarfs and find that
while older atmospheric models appeared to over-predict the temperature of the
coolest objects compared to evolutionary models, more recent atmospheric models

Preliminary spatial analysis of Hendra disease outbreaks in South East Queensland
Hendra Virus was first reported in the suburb of Hendra, Brisbane in 1994. It has proven to be fatal to both humans and horses, with the first outbreak resulting in the death of 13 horses and a trainer. Since then, there have been several other outbreaks reported across Queensland, from Cairns to the New South Wales border at Murwillumbah. Due to the frequent incidents of the virus outbreak, the Queensland Government's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) stated that there is a pressing need for current research on the spatial and temporal occurrences of the virus infections (DAFF 2012). This paper presents an overview of the research, and the preliminary results of the relationship between the Hendra disease outbreaks and the roosting sites of flying-foxes in the south-east Queensland. The results show a strong relationship (92% of the incidents) between temporary and seasonal roosting sites (rather than the permanent continuous roosting sites) and the outbreak locations. This finding suggests the need for detailed cluster analysis and regression models to identify the risk factors for the spread of the disease
Attack Resilience of the Evolving Scientific Collaboration Network
Stationary complex networks have been extensively studied in the last ten years. However, many natural systems are known to be continuously evolving at the local (“microscopic”) level. Understanding the response to targeted attacks of an evolving network may shed light on both how to design robust systems and finding effective attack strategies. In this paper we study empirically the response to targeted attacks of the scientific collaboration networks. First we show that scientific collaboration network is a complex system which evolves intensively at the local level – fewer than 20% of scientific collaborations last more than one year. Then, we investigate the impact of the sudden death of eminent scientists on the evolution of the collaboration networks of their former collaborators. We observe in particular that the sudden death, which is equivalent to the removal of the center of the egocentric network of the eminent scientist, does not affect the topological evolution of the residual network. Nonetheless, removal of the eminent hub node is exactly the strategy one would adopt for an effective targeted attack on a stationary network. Hence, we use this evolving collaboration network as an experimental model for attack on an evolving complex network. We find that such attacks are ineffectual, and infer that the scientific collaboration network is the trace of knowledge propagation on a larger underlying social network. The redundancy of the underlying structure in fact acts as a protection mechanism against such network attacks
