A Search for Kinematic Evidence of Radial Gas Flows in Spiral Galaxies
CO and HI velocity fields of seven nearby spiral galaxies, derived from
radio-interferometric observations, are decomposed into Fourier components
whose radial variation is used to search for evidence of radial gas flows.
Additional information provided by optical or near-infrared isophotes is also
considered, including the relationship between the morphological and kinematic
position angles. To assist in interpreting the data, we present detailed
modeling that demonstrates the effects of bar streaming, inflow, and a warp on
the observed Fourier components. We find in all of the galaxies evidence for
either elliptical streaming or a warped disk over some range in radius, with
deviations from pure circular rotation at the level of ~20-60 km/s. Evidence
for kinematic warps is observed in several cases well inside R_{25}. No
unambiguous evidence for radial inflows is seen in any of the seven galaxies,
and we are able to place an upper limit of ~5-10 km/s (3-5% of the circular
speed) on the magnitude of any radial inflow in the inner regions of NGC 4414,
5033 and 5055. We conclude that the inherent non-axisymmetry of spiral galaxies

Surveillance of emerging drugs of abuse in Hong Kong: Validation of an analytical tool

Objective: To validate a locally developed chromatography-based method to monitor emerging drugs of abuse whilst performing regular drug testing in abusers. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Eleven regional hospitals, seven social service units, and a tertiary level clinical toxicology laboratory in Hong Kong. Participants: A total of 972 drug abusers and high-risk individuals were recruited from acute, rehabilitation, and high-risk settings between 1 November 2011 and 31 July 2013. A subset of the participants was of South Asian ethnicity. In total, 2000 urine or hair specimens were collected. Main outcome measures: Proof of concept that surveillance of emerging drugs of abuse can be performed whilst conducting routine drug of abuse testing in patients. Results: The method was successfully applied to 2000 samples with three emerging drugs of abuse detected in five samples: PMMA (paramethoxymethamphetamine), TFMPP [1-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)piperazine], and methcathinone. The method also detected conventional drugs of abuse, with codeine, methadone, heroin, methamphetamine, and ketamine being the most frequently detected drugs. Other findings included the observation that South Asians had significantly higher rates of using opiates such as heroin, methadone, and codeine; and that ketamine and cocaine had significantly higher detection rates in acute subjects compared with the rehabilitation population. Conclusions: This locally developed analytical method is a valid tool for simultaneous surveillance of emerging drugs of abuse and routine drug monitoring of patients at minimal additional cost and effort. Continued, proactive surveillance and early identification of emerging drugs will facilitate prompt clinical, social, and legislative management.Link_to_subscribed_fulltex
Electronic structure of fluorides: general trends for ground and excited state properties
The electronic structure of fluorite crystals are studied by means of density
functional theory within the local density approximation for the exchange
correlation energy. The ground-state electronic properties, which have been
calculated for the cubic structures ,, , ,
, -, using a plane waves expansion of the wave
functions, show good comparison with existing experimental data and previous
theoretical results. The electronic density of states at the gap region for all
the compounds and their energy-band structure have been calculated and compared
with the existing data in the literature. General trends for the ground-state
parameters, the electronic energy-bands and transition energies for all the
fluorides considered are given and discussed in details. Moreover, for the

Measuring the dark side (with weak lensing)
We introduce a convenient parametrization of dark energy models that is
general enough to include several modified gravity models and generalized forms
of dark energy. In particular we take into account the linear perturbation
growth factor, the anisotropic stress and the modified Poisson equation. We
discuss the sensitivity of large scale weak lensing surveys like the proposed
DUNE satellite to these parameters. We find that a large-scale weak-lensing
tomographic survey is able to easily distinguish the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati
model from LCDM and to determine the perturbation growth index to an absolute

âCaution! The Bread is Poisonedâ: The Hong Kong Mass Poisoning of January 1857
This article examines the Hong Kong mass poisoning of 15 January 1857, in which bread from a Chinese bakery that supplied the colonial community was adulterated with arsenic. Even though there is a wealth of printed and manuscript documentation available many vital aspects of the poisoning remain unclear. What kind of incident was it: an act of terrorism and attempted mass murder, a war crime, a criminal conspiracy, an act of commercial sabotage, an accident or even an imagined or imaginary event? Throughout, our focus remains firmly fixed on the central act of the poisoning itself and on what it reveals about the precarious nature of early colonial Hong Kong. Interpretations have swarmed over the available âfacts'. Equally ironic is what happened to the afterlife of how the event was understood. This article seeks to rescue the Hong Kong poisoning from being a freakish and isolated footnote of only local interest. Accepting this historical verdict would be a mistake as it is of significance not only at a local level, but geopolitically in Britain and across the empire

HDAC9 is implicated in atherosclerotic aortic calcification and affects vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype.
Aortic calcification is an important independent predictor of future cardiovascular events. We performed a genome-wide association meta-analysis to determine SNPs associated with the extent of abdominal aortic calcification (nâ=â9,417) or descending thoracic aortic calcification (nâ=â8,422). Two genetic loci, HDAC9 and RAP1GAP, were associated with abdominal aortic calcification at a genome-wide level (Pâ<â5.0âĂâ10-8). No SNPs were associated with thoracic aortic calcification at the genome-wide threshold. Increased expression of HDAC9 in human aortic smooth muscle cells promoted calcification and reduced contractility, while inhibition of HDAC9 in human aortic smooth muscle cells inhibited calcification and enhanced cell contractility. In matrix Gla protein-deficient mice, a model of human vascular calcification, mice lacking HDAC9 had a 40% reduction in aortic calcification and improved survival. This translational genomic study identifies the first genetic risk locus associated with calcification of the abdominal aorta and describes a previously unknown role for HDAC9 in the development of vascular calcification

Evidence for the η_b(1S) Meson in Radiative ΄(2S) Decay
We have performed a search for the η_b(1S) meson in the radiative decay of the ΄(2S) resonance using a sample of 91.6 Ă 10^6 ΄(2S) events recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. We observe a peak in the photon energy spectrum at E_Îł = 609.3^(+4.6)_(-4.5)(stat)±1.9(syst) MeV, corresponding to an η_b(1S) mass of 9394.2^(+4.8)_(-4.9)(stat) ± 2.0(syst) MeV/c^2. The branching fraction for the decay ΄(2S) â γη_b(1S) is determined to be [3.9 ± 1.1(stat)^(+1.1)_(-0.9)(syst)] Ă 10^(-4). We find the ratio of branching fractions B[΄(2S) â γη_b(1S)]/B[΄(3S) â γη_b(1S)]= 0.82 ± 0.24(stat)^(+0.20)_(-0.19)(syst)
