Trans-nasal endoscopic and intra-oral combined approach for odontogenic cysts

    Get PDF
Maxillary cysts are a common finding in maxillofacial surgery, dentistry and otolaryngology. Treatment is surgical; a traditional approach includes Caldwell-Luc and other intra-oral approaches. In this article, we analyse the outcomes of 9 patients operated on using a combined intra-oral and trans-nasal approach to the aforementioned disease. Although the number of patients is small, the good results of this study suggest that the combined approach might be a reliable treatment option

The eight questions discussed in this article are as follows: (1) Why is new legislation needed in the field of product liability? (2) What should be the basis of a new regime of product liability? (3) Who should be liable? (4) What products should be subject to a new regime of product liability? (5) Who should be entitled to sue? (6) What defenses shall be allowed? (7) What damage should be compensated? (8) How long should the producer\u27s liability last

Analysis of the effects of an oncogenic stress on the cell cycle in human tumoral cells

Although differing only for the last 24 aminoacids, the three major isoforms of p21 Ras (Ha-, Ki- and N \u2013Ras) can trigger alternative pathways of signal transduction, at least in part as a consequence of different post-translational modifications and subcellular localization. Ras mutations are a common event in tumorigenesis. In colorectal carcinomas (CRCs) the mutations affect almost exclusively Ki-Ras, while Ha-Ras mutations are mostly found in bladder carcinomas and N-Ras mutations in leukemia cells. In almost all cases, the genetic alteration is a point mutation in codons 12 or 13, and less frequently in codon 61. By affecting the GTPase activity of the protein, they always lead to a constitutively active protein. However, data obtained in different experimental systems or by analysis of primary and metastatic tumors show that not only mutations of different isoforms of Ras, but also mutations in different codons or different mutations in the same codon of the same isoform of Ras may have diverse biological consequences. To shed more light on the molecular mechanisms responsible for the different effects of Ras mutations, we have obtained stable clones of HT-29 (a human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line in which the endogenous Ras genes are wild type) transfected with cDNAs codifying Ha-RasG12V, Ki-RasG12V and Ki-RasG13D, under the control of an hormone-inducible promoter. We found that the expression of each of these mutated Ras isoforms induces specific, different effects on cell morphology and growth rate. FACS analysis shows also a differential effect on the cell cycle. H-RasG12V expression, in addition, induces apoptosis, through caspase activation mediated by p53 independent, MEK-1 dependent expression of the CDK inhibitor p21

On the continuous Cesàro operator in certain function spaces

“The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11117-014-0321-5"Various properties of the (continuous) Cesàro operator C, acting on Banach and Fréchet spaces of continuous functions and L p-spaces, are investigated. For instance, the spectrum and point spectrum of C are completely determined and a study of certain dynamics of C is undertaken (eg. hyper- and supercyclicity, chaotic behaviour). In addition, the mean (and uniform mean) ergodic nature of C acting in the various spaces is identified. The research of the first two authors was partially supported by the projects MTM2010-15200 and GVA Prometeo II/2013/013 (Spain). Adjoint bi-continuous semigroups and semigroups on the space of measures

    Get PDF
For a given bi-continuous semigroup T on a Banach space X we define its adjoint on an appropriate closed subspace X^o of the norm dual X'. Under some abstract conditions this adjoint semigroup is again bi-continuous with respect to the weak topology (X^o,X). An application is the following: For K a Polish space we consider operator semigroups on the space C(K) of bounded, continuous functions (endowed with the compact-open topology) and on the space M(K) of bounded Baire measures (endowed with the weak*-topology). We show that bi-continuous semigroups on M(K) are precisely those that are adjoints of a bi-continuous semigroups on C(K). We also prove that the class of bi-continuous semigroups on C(K) with respect to the compact-open topology coincides with the class of equicontinuous semigroups with respect to the strict topology. In general, if K is not Polish space this is not the case

Design of a high protein, no added sugar pistachio spread using oleogel as fat replacer

The production of multicomponent food items requires a correct ratio among the ingredients when specific quality parameters must be obtained. Recently, there has been an increase in the trend of consumption of healthy products, low in sugar and saturated fat and with increased protein intake. Nut based spreads need a high percentage of sugars and fat to guarantee their spreadability and mouth-melting behaviour. The present work was then aimed to design a pistachio spread without added sugars, low in saturated fat, spreadable and inducing positive sensory attributes to the consumer. An optimal formulation of a no added sugars and high protein pistachio spread was obtained by using olive oil based oleogel as unsaturated fat replacer and increasing the amount of milk originated powders (skimmed milk powder and whey protein concentrate) as structural modifier. The optimization, done by mixture design, considered technological and sensorial aspects together. The experimental design consisted of twelve different formulations in which oleogel, whey proteins and skimmed milk were set as the ingredients while spreadability, oil binding capacity, and sensory attributes like meltability, mouth adhesiveness and undesirable flavours were used as responses. Polynomial regression models were used to fit the experimental data for each type of investigated response of pistachio spreads. The optimized formulation in terms of the selected quality responses was identified in a spread characterized by 20% of olive oil based-oleogel, 13.16% of whey proteins and 26.84% of skimmed milk, achieving an overall desirability score of 0.56. The optimized spread formulation showed a spreadability of 11.71 N mm, OBC of 95.88% and sensory scores of 5.61, 9.31 and 5.42 for meltability, adhesiveness to mouth and other flavours respectively

Aspherical Complex Surfaces, the Singer Conjecture, and Gromov-L\"uck Inequality χ≥∣σ∣\chi \geq |\sigma|

We discuss the Singer conjecture and Gromov-L\"uck inequality χ≥∣σ∣\chi \geq |\sigma| for aspherical complex surfaces. We give a proof of the Singer conjecture for aspherical complex surface with residually finite fundamental group that does not rely on Gromov's K\"ahler groups theory. Without the residually finiteness assumption, we observe that this conjecture can be proven for all aspherical complex surfaces except possibly those in Class VII0+\mathrm{VII}_0^+ (a positive answer to the global spherical shell conjecture would rule out the existence of aspherical surfaces in this class). We also sharpen Gromov's inequality for aspherical complex surfaces that are not in Class VII0+\mathrm{VII}_0^+. This is achieved by connecting the circle of ideas of the Singer conjecture with the study of Reid's conjecture.Comment: Added an application of Theorem 1.4 to a recent Hodge-theoretic version of the Singer-Hopf conjecture due to Arapura-Maxim-Wang [AMW23

The phenomenon of GAS (Solidarity Purchase Groups) in Sicily has in Gasualmente an important actor. This GAS, was created following a structured training program and research by the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Palermo. It now plays an important role as activator of relationships and ethical affirmation of critical consumption, and promotion of organic products. The study aims through the Social Network Analysis, to investigate Gasualmente network and the role played by all the actors involved
