Aims: Characterisation of alkaliphilic Bacillus species for spore production and germination and calcite formation as a prelude to investigate their potential in micro-crack remediation in concrete. Methods and Results: Conditions, extent and timing of endospore production was determined by dark field light microscopy; germination induction and kinetics was assessed by combining reduction in optical density with formation of refractile bodies by phase contrast microscopy. B. pseudofirmus was selected from several species as the most suitable isolate. Levels and timing of calcium carbonate precipitated in vitro by B. pseudofirmus was evaluated by atomic absorption spectroscopy and structural identity confirmed as calcite and aragonite by Raman spectroscopy and FITR. The isolate produced copious spores that germinated rapidly in the presence of germinants L-alanine, inosine and NaCl. Bacterial cells produced CaCO3 crystals in micro-cracks and the resulting occlusion markedly restricted water ingress. Conclusions: By virtue of rapid spore production and germination, calcium carbonate formation in vitro and in situ, leading to sealing of micro-cracks, B. pseudofirmus shows clear potential for remediation of concrete on a commercial scale. Significance and Impact of Study: Microbial sealing of micro-cracks should become a practicable and sustainable means of increasing concrete durability

The requirements for autonomic microbiologically-induced calcite-precipitation in concrete

    Get PDF
This paper addresses the complex problem of using microbiologically-induced calcite-precipitation as a means of autonomic self-healing of concrete and describes the requirements for the encapsulated bacteria, precursors and nutrients. The paper discusses the need to use copious spore-forming alkaliphilic bacteria that germinate relatively quickly and considers the kinetics of microbiologically-induced calcite-precipitation. Issues relating to pH and temperature are also discussed. The paper also considers the compatibility of the nutrients and organic precursors with concrete. It is concluded that whilst the encapsulation of bacteria, nutrients and organic precursors that lead to microbiologically-induced calcite-precipitation is readily achievable, optimisation of the process requires further biological and engineering research. Some key areas of further fundamental research are highlighted

The fishery industry is an organized activity related to the management and utilization of fish resources and the environment, ranging from pre-production, production to marketing are carried out within one business fishing industry. Gajah Mungkur Wonogiri has the potential for the cultivation of freshwater that is floating cages. The purpose of this study is to measure the feasibility evaluaton of using a financial analysis and economics through some of the eligibility criteria of business, namely Payback Period, Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, ProfitabilityIndex, Break Eventand depictions of aspects of the business using the business Model Canvas (BMC). The results of a financial analysis floating cages red tilapia fish in the study area seen from the calculation of the Payback Period that is 6 months 7 days, an Internal Rate of Return of 84% for 2 years, the Net Present Value for 2 years has a value of Rp 82,943,219.00, Profitability Index for 2 years ie amounted to 5.155, Break Event Point on the amount of sales of 4.280 kg in the 24-month year-to-2 or in the number of admissions of Rp 109,217,040.00, shows that the business is feasible and has a huge advantage. Aspects of the market determines the value dapam increase profit from the work done, while determining the environmental aspects in the process of quality control environment, especially the water reservoir as the main means of supporting business continuity floating net cages of tilapia merah.Dalam depiction of aspects of the business using the Business Model Canvas (BMC) for the cultivation of floating net cage red tilapia fish in the study area there are nine components. Ninth such components have their respective roles in this business activity. Keywords: Keramba cage, Red Tilapia Fish, Feasibility Evaluation Analysis, BM

Towards the Implementation of Monetary Management in Islamic Economic System Based on Recent Developments

Monetary management is an essential part of the objectives of Shari’ah under the umbrella of the preservation of wealth (Ma’al). Our primary sources: Qur’an and Sunn’ah, provide divine legislation on the prohibition of Riba to manage bases of monetary transaction. Further, the juristic tools facilitate scholars to propose solutions to meet the emerging issues on diversified aspects of society. Muslim scholars have always adapted and contributed to the Islamic finance system and regulation, theoretically and practically. In recent decades, Islamic banking and finance has seen strong momentum with double digit growth, fulfilling the monetary requirement of depositors on the liability side along with industry on the asset side. We seek to review the theoretical and empirical literature on Islamic monetary mangement. Monetary management in the Islamic economic context is still an area that needs more research. This paper examines how literature has been developed over time up until modern Islamic economic and banking practices. The findings suggest that Islamic monetary management has been gradually developed in recent years and such development is remarkable steps forward in pursuing Islamic monetary policy independently. In addition, Islamic monetary policy is proved to be relatively more effective compared to interest based conventional monetary policy. The implications of such findings have established new milestones for the central banks of all the countries, including the muslim majority countries for pursuing interest free Islamic monetary policy with full confidence.  Furthermore, there are four major views on Islamic monetary policy and the central banks of the world should choose one of the best methods and views for the greater effectiveness of monetary policy because conventional monetary policy has been less effective in bringing full employment and price stability in recent years and financial crisis has crippled the interest based conventional economic systems quite badly

The effect of water-borne contaminants on the durability of concrete is waswell-known and cracked concrete is more susceptible to permeation of these contaminants. Consequently, research is attempting to develop concrete that can self-heal cracks, potentially reducing costs of repair and maintenance work on infrastructure projects dramatically. The research described in this paper was carried out to demonstrate the use of microbiologically induced calcite-precipitation as a means of autonomic self-healing of concrete in a full-scale site trial. The paper describes microbiology and concrete technology investigations carried out to select an appropriate combination of spores and nutrients, and to devise a method for encapsulating these safely within the concrete. It is demonstrated that for the encapsulation method used and the agents chosen it is possible to produce self-healing concrete with similar early-age and mechanical properties to that of normal concrete. This self-healing concrete was then used in a reinforced concrete wall, and the initial findings are described

The dataset contains the data used to prepare the research paper "Application of expanded perlite encapsulated bacteria and growth media for self-healing concrete". This research investigated the self-healing performance of concrete in terms of the number of bacterial spores required and the concentration and composition of nutrients and precursors. The dataset contains: 1. The particle size distribution of the perlite used. 2. Calculations of the number of bacterial cells to calcium acetate. 3. The optical density of bacteria growth in three media. 4. Calcite productivity in the three media in relation to number of bacteria cells. 5. Details of the mortar mix designs. 6. The mean initial surface absorption of mortars from 10 to 120 minutes
