Graphene as Transparent Electrode for Direct Observation of Hole Photoemission from Silicon to Oxide
The outstanding electrical and optical properties of graphene make it an
excellent alternative as a transparent electrode. Here we demonstrate the
application of graphene as collector material in internal photoemission (IPE)
spectroscopy; enabling the direct observation of both electron and hole
injections at a Si/Al2O3 interface and successfully overcoming the
long-standing difficulty of detecting holes injected from a semiconductor
emitter in IPE measurements. The observed electron and hole barrier heights are
3.5 eV and 4.1 eV, respectively. Thus the bandgap of Al2O3 can be further
deduced to be 6.5 eV, in close agreement with the valued obtained by vacuum
ultraviolet spectroscopic ellipsometry analysis. The detailed optical modeling
of a graphene/Al2O3/Si stack reveals that by using graphene in IPE measurements
the carrier injection from the emitter is significantly enhanced and the
contribution of carrier injection from the collector electrode is minimal. The
method can be readily extended to various IPE test structures for a complete
band alignment analysis and interface characterization.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Matter-gravity couplings and Lorentz violation
The gravitational couplings of matter are studied in the presence of Lorentz
and CPT violation. At leading order in the coefficients for Lorentz violation,
the relativistic quantum hamiltonian is derived from the gravitationally
coupled minimal Standard-Model Extension. For spin-independent effects, the
nonrelativistic quantum hamiltonian and the classical dynamics for test and
source bodies are obtained. A systematic perturbative method is developed to
treat small metric and coefficient fluctuations about a Lorentz-violating and
Minkowski background. The post-newtonian metric and the trajectory of a test
body freely falling under gravity in the presence of Lorentz violation are
established. An illustrative example is presented for a bumblebee model. The
general methodology is used to identify observable signals of Lorentz and CPT
violation in a variety of gravitational experiments and observations, including
gravimeter measurements, laboratory and satellite tests of the weak equivalence
principle, antimatter studies, solar-system observations, and investigations of
the gravitational properties of light. Numerous sensitivities to coefficients
for Lorentz violation can be achieved in existing or near-future experiments at
the level of parts in 10^3 down to parts in 10^{15}. Certain coefficients are
uniquely detectable in gravitational searches and remain unmeasured to date.Comment: 59 pages two-column REVTe
Bound on Lorentz- and CPT-Violating Boost Effects for the Neutron
A search for an annual variation of a daily sidereal modulation of the
frequency difference between co-located Xe and He Zeeman
masers sets a stringent limit on boost-dependent Lorentz and CPT violation
involving the neutron, consistent with no effect at the level of 150 nHz. In
the framework of the general Standard-Model Extension, the present result
provides the first clean test for the fermion sector of the symmetry of
spacetime under boost transformations at a level of GeV.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Relationship between serum testosterone and fracture risk in men: a comparison of RIA and LC-MS/MS
BACKGROUND: Serum testosterone can be measured byLC-MS/MS and RIA. We investigated whether the testosterone–fracture relationship was affected by the method of measurement.
METHODS: We measured total testosterone (TT) by LCMS/MS (TTLC-MS/MS) and RIA (TTRIA) in serum samples collected from 602 men whose incident fractures had been continuously ascertained by x-ray reports from 1989 to 2010. We measured bone mineral density (BMD) by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. The association between TT and fracture risk was assessed by the Cox proportional hazards model, taking into account the effect of age and BMD.
CONCLUSIONS: The concordance between LC-MS/MS and RIA in the measurement of serum TT was moderate. Moreover, the magnitude of association between testosterone and fracture risk in older men was largely unaffected by the method of measurement.

Signals for Lorentz Violation in Post-Newtonian Gravity
The pure-gravity sector of the minimal Standard-Model Extension is studied in
the limit of Riemann spacetime. A method is developed to extract the modified
Einstein field equations in the limit of small metric fluctuations about the
Minkowski vacuum, while allowing for the dynamics of the 20 independent
coefficients for Lorentz violation. The linearized effective equations are
solved to obtain the post-newtonian metric. The corresponding post-newtonian
behavior of a perfect fluid is studied and applied to the gravitating many-body
system. Illustrative examples of the methodology are provided using bumblebee
models. The implications of the general theoretical results are studied for a
variety of existing and proposed gravitational experiments, including lunar and
satellite laser ranging, laboratory experiments with gravimeters and torsion
pendula, measurements of the spin precession of orbiting gyroscopes, timing
studies of signals from binary pulsars, and the classic tests involving the
perihelion precession and the time delay of light. For each type of experiment
considered, estimates of the attainable sensitivities are provided. Numerous
effects of local Lorentz violation can be studied in existing or near-future
experiments at sensitivities ranging from parts in 10^4 down to parts in

Monitoring for Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance to artemisinin and artesunate in Binh Phuoc Province, Vietnam: 1998-2009
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Artemisinin derivatives have been used for malaria treatment in Vietnam since 1989. Reported malaria cases have decreased from 1,672,000 with 4,650 deaths in 1991, to 91,635 with 43 deaths in 2006. Current national guidelines recommend artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT), although artesunate is still available as monotherapy through the private sector. Recent reports suggest that effectiveness of ACT and artesunate monotherapy has declined in western Cambodia. This study examined <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>resistance patterns over 10 years in southwest Vietnam in infected patients treated with artemisinin compounds.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study was conducted in two communes in Phuoc Long district, Binh Phuoc province, 100 km west of the Cambodian border. This was chosen as a likely site for emerging artemisinin resistance because of the high prevalence of <it>P. falciparum </it>malaria, and the length of time that artemisinin had been in use. In <it>vivo </it>and <it>in vitro </it>monitoring of <it>P. falciparum </it>susceptibility to anti-malarial drugs was conducted in 1998, 2001, 2004/5, and 2008/9. Patients with confirmed <it>P. falciparum </it>malaria received therapy with 5 or 7 days of artemisinin (1998 and 2001 respectively) or 7 days of artesunate</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the four surveys, 270 patients were recruited and treated. The mean parasite clearance times differed between 1998, 2001 and 2004/5 (1.8, 2.3 and 2.1 days, P < 0.01) but not between 1998 and 2008/2009. The mean parasite clearance times were correlated with parasite density at day 0 (r = 0.4; P < 0.001). Treatment failure rates after PCR adjustment were 13.8%, 2.9%, 1.2%, and 0% respectively. Susceptibility of <it>P. falciparum </it>to artemisinin in <it>in vitro </it>tests was stable during the period, except for a rise in EC90 and EC99 in 2001.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study showed stable levels of <it>P. falciparum </it>sensitivity to artemisinin compounds in the two sites over a ten-year period. The introduction of ACT in this area in 2003 may have protected against the development of artemisinin resistance. Adherence to the latest WHO and Vietnamese guidelines, which recommend ACT as first-line therapy in all malarious areas, and continued monitoring along the Vietnam-Cambodia border will be essential to prevent the spread of artemisinin resistance in Vietnam.</p
Polyoxazoline-Based Bottlebrush and Brush-Arm Star Polymers via ROMP: Syntheses and Applications as Organic Radical Contrast Agents

The synthesis of functional poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) (PAOx) copolymers with complex nanoarchitectures using a graft-through ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) approach is described. First, well-defined norbornene-terminated poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PEtOx) macromonomers (MM) were prepared by cationic ring-opening polymerization. ROMP of these MMs produced bottlebrush copolymers with PEtOx side chains. In addition, PEtOx-based branched MMs bearing a terminal alkyne group were prepared and conjugated to an azide-containing bis-spirocyclohexyl nitroxide via Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). ROMP of this branched MM, followed by in situ cross-linking, provided PEtOx-based brush-arm star polymers (BASPs) with nitroxide radicals localized at the core-shell interface. These PEtOx-based nitroxide-containing BASPs displayed relaxivity values on par with state-of-the-art polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based nitroxide materials, making them promising as organic radical contrast agents for metal-free magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Right coronary wall cmr in the older asymptomatic advance cohort: positive remodeling and associations with type 2 diabetes and coronary calcium
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Coronary wall cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is a promising noninvasive approach to assess subclinical atherosclerosis, but data are limited in subjects over 60 years old, who are at increased risk. The purpose of the study was to evaluate coronary wall CMR in an asymptomatic older cohort.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Cross-sectional images of the proximal right coronary artery (RCA) were acquired using spiral black-blood coronary CMR (0.7 mm resolution) in 223 older, community-based patients without a history of cardiovascular disease (age 60-72 years old, 38% female). Coronary measurements (total vessel area, lumen area, wall area, and wall thickness) had small intra- and inter-observer variabilities (r = 0.93~0.99, all p < 0.0001), though one-third of these older subjects had suboptimal image quality. Increased coronary wall thickness correlated with increased coronary vessel area (p < 0.0001), consistent with positive remodeling. On multivariate analysis, type 2 diabetes was the only risk factor associated with increased coronary wall area and thickness (p = 0.03 and p = 0.007, respectively). Coronary wall CMR measures were also associated with coronary calcification (p = 0.01-0.03).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Right coronary wall CMR in asymptomatic older subjects showed increased coronary atherosclerosis in subjects with type 2 diabetes as well as coronary calcification. Coronary wall CMR may contribute to the noninvasive assessment of subclinical coronary atherosclerosis in older, at-risk patient groups.</p
Minimum information and guidelines for reporting a Multiplexed Assay of Variant Effect
Multiplexed Assays of Variant Effect (MAVEs) have emerged as a powerful
approach for interrogating thousands of genetic variants in a single
experiment. The flexibility and widespread adoption of these techniques across
diverse disciplines has led to a heterogeneous mix of data formats and
descriptions, which complicates the downstream use of the resulting datasets.
To address these issues and promote reproducibility and reuse of MAVE data, we
define a set of minimum information standards for MAVE data and metadata and
outline a controlled vocabulary aligned with established biomedical ontologies
for describing these experimental designs
