As encrypted traffic is becoming a standard and traffic obfuscation techniques become more accessible and common, companies are struggling to enforce their network usage policies and ensure optimal operational network performance. Users are more technologically knowledgeable, being able to circumvent web content filtering tools with the usage of protected tunnels such as VPNs. Consequently, techniques such as DPI, which already were considered outdated due to their impracticality, become even more ineffective. Furthermore, the continuous regulations being established by governments and international unions regarding citizen privacy rights makes network monitoring increasingly challenging. This work presents a scalable and easily deployable network-based framework for application identification in a corporate environment, focusing on video applications. This framework should be effective regardless of the environment and network setup, with the objective of being a useful tool in the network monitoring process. The proposed framework offers a compromise between allowing network supervision and assuring workers’ privacy. The results evaluation indicates that we can identify web services that are running over a protected channel with an accuracy of 95%, using low-level packet information that does not jeopardize sensitive worker data.

Background: Laboratory investigations are often required to manage patients in the hospital. Laboratory request forms serve as a medium between the pathologists and the clinician. Improperly filled laboratory forms may result in misdiagnosis and inadvertent mix-up of patients results. We therefore undertook to document the extent to which Doctors properly fill laboratory request forms at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri. Methods: One thousand two hundred laboratory request forms which had already been filled out by various Doctors in the hospital between January and June, 2013 were randomly selected and analysed. The forms were evaluated to assess the completeness of information entered by the requesting Clinician. Results: The patients' names and investigations requested were entered on all forms. 3.0% of forms did not state the gender of the patient, while 11.5% did not even give the age of the patient. 9.6% did not specify the patient's location and 34.0% did not have the patient's hospital number. 25.5% of forms also did not have the name of the attending Consultant and 15.5% did not have the name of the requesting Doctor, while 27.1% of all forms were not signed by the requesting Doctor. A working diagnosis was not stated on 16.5% of forms. Also, the date of collection and nature of the specimen were not stated on 21.5% and 11.0% of forms respectively. Conclusion: Laboratory request forms are not always properly filled by Clinicians. Only the patients' names and the requested investigations were filled on all forms. There is the need to remind Clinicians of the importance of carefully filling laboratory request forms. Keywords: Laboratory request; form completion; Doctors documentation; Nigeri

Physicochemical and bacteriological parameters were investigated in river nun along its path with stations situate at Amassoma, Tantua and Tombia communities of Bayelsa State. This was undertaken in order to gauge the effect of human intrusions and show site specific patterns in the effect of pollutants on the health of the river. Physicochemical parameters of Temperature, pH, Turbidity, Conductivity and Total Dissolved Solids were investigated. While bacteriological variables of heterotrophic and total coliform bacteria were identified in the water samples. Result was analyzed for means and standard deviation, Analysis of variance was conducted at the 95% confidence to determine the variability and similarities between sampling stations. Turkey post Hoc test was thereafter employed to separate means and show the relatedness between variables. Result from the study indicate that there were significant differences (P0.05) but significantly different from Tombia. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) between all stations in heterotrophic bacteria. Heterotrophic bacteria count show that Tombia>Amassoma>Tantua. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) between all stations in total coliform bacteria count. However, Amassoma>Tantua> Tombia. The Preponderance of total coliform bacteria in Amassoma and Tantua more than in Tombia is attributable to human activities of open defecation into the river. All total coliform bacteria count exceeded international permissible limit. This imply that the safety and health of people living along the river catchments is in grave danger as the consumption of these water without treatment can be fatal

Background: Radiological investigations are often essential in the management of patients. The request forms act as a medium between the managing Physician and the Radiologists who is often required to make significant input. Failure to properly complete these forms may therefore result in misdiagnosis and possible mix-up of the forms. We therefore, undertook to document the extent to which radiological request forms are properly filled. Methods: Three hundred radiological request forms which had already been filled out by doctors at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital between January and June, 2014 were randomly selected and analyzed. The forms were evaluated for completeness of the information entered by the clinician. Results: The names of the patients and the requested investigations were fully entered on all 300 forms. However, all other criteria were not fully completed. The ages of the patients were filled in properly on 259 (86.3%) forms, while 13 (4.3%) did not record any age. The date on which the investigations were requested was filled on 294 (98.0%) of forms. Four (1.3%) did not fill in any date while it was  incompletely filled in 2 (0. 7%). Also, the sex of the patient was filled on only 292 (97.3%). The required clinical information of the patient was recorded in 275 (91. 7%) of forms. One (0.3%) did not give any clinical information while 24 (8.0%) forms did not have adequately filled clinical information. Also, the name of the requesting doctor was filled in 273 (91.0%) forms while 27 (9.0%) forms did not have the name of the requesting doctor. The requesting doctors signed in 273 (91.0%) forms while 27 (9.0%) did not carry any signature. The name of the Consultant Surgeon was recorded in 244 (81.3%) while 56 (18. 7%) did not have the Consultants' names. Conclusion: Radiological request forms are not always filled out properly. Only the names of the patients and the required investigations were properly written. Keywords: Radiological request; forms completion; audi

Many Nigerian manufacturing firms have faced working capital management anomalies due to concerns of balancing profitability and liquidity that led to most business failures. To remain competitive corporate managers and business leaders of manufacturing firms need to operate optimally in working capital by understanding the association between working capital management (WCM), working capital strategy (WCS), and performance. Using the cash conversion cycle theory as the linchpin, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between WCM, WCS, and performance. The study utilized secondary financial data spanning 2014 to 2018 from a random sample of 54 publicly traded Nigerian manufacturing firms. The regression results consisting of three models were statistically significant in predicting performance as it relates to economic value added (EVA), return on capital employed (ROCE), and Tobin’s Q (TQ). The regression results revealed that WCM and WCS were significant predictors of EVA, (F (5, 48) = 2.672, p ˂ .05, R2 = .218; ROCE, (F (5, 48) = 7.143, p ˂ .001, R2 = .427; and TQ, (F (5, 48) = 25.920, p ˂ .001, R2 = .730. Overall, the findings showed that WCM and WCS significantly predicted performance (p ˂ .05). Corporate managers and business leaders may integrate findings to enhance employee knowledge in working capital efficiency in the overall corporate strategy for the firm\u27s profitability and sustainability. Profitable businesses may prepare dedicated corporate social responsibility budgets to cater to community-based infrastructures. These include roads, schools, and hospitals, amongst others, to improve the populace\u27s living conditions, thereby maintaining peace and order in society

The impact of surgical delay on resectability of colorectal cancer: An international prospective cohort study

    Get PDF
AIM: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has provided a unique opportunity to explore the impact of surgical delays on cancer resectability. This study aimed to compare resectability for colorectal cancer patients undergoing delayed versus non-delayed surgery. METHODS: This was an international prospective cohort study of consecutive colorectal cancer patients with a decision for curative surgery (January-April 2020). Surgical delay was defined as an operation taking place more than 4 weeks after treatment decision, in a patient who did not receive neoadjuvant therapy. A subgroup analysis explored the effects of delay in elective patients only. The impact of longer delays was explored in a sensitivity analysis. The primary outcome was complete resection, defined as curative resection with an R0 margin. RESULTS: Overall, 5453 patients from 304 hospitals in 47 countries were included, of whom 6.6% (358/5453) did not receive their planned operation. Of the 4304 operated patients without neoadjuvant therapy, 40.5% (1744/4304) were delayed beyond 4 weeks. Delayed patients were more likely to be older, men, more comorbid, have higher body mass index and have rectal cancer and early stage disease. Delayed patients had higher unadjusted rates of complete resection (93.7% vs. 91.9%, P = 0.032) and lower rates of emergency surgery (4.5% vs. 22.5%, P < 0.001). After adjustment, delay was not associated with a lower rate of complete resection (OR 1.18, 95% CI 0.90-1.55, P = 0.224), which was consistent in elective patients only (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.69-1.27, P = 0.672). Longer delays were not associated with poorer outcomes. CONCLUSION: One in 15 colorectal cancer patients did not receive their planned operation during the first wave of COVID-19. Surgical delay did not appear to compromise resectability, raising the hypothesis that any reduction in long-term survival attributable to delays is likely to be due to micro-metastatic disease
