DESIGN, SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION OF SOME NEW SUBSTITUTED CHALCONES AND STUDIES THEIR ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES
Eight designed chalcones, named [1(p-benzenesulphonamidophenyl)-3-p-chloro-2-propene-1-one][2], [1(p-benzenesulphonamidophenyl)-3-p-nitro-2-propene-1-one][3], [1(4-Ureido)phenyl-3-p-chlorophenyl-2-propene-1-one][5], [1(4-Ureido)phenyl-3-p-nitroophenyl-2-propene-1-one][6], [1(4(p-N-methylaminophenyl)azophenyl-3-p-chlorophenyl-2-propene-1-one][8], [1(4(p-N-methylaminophenyl)azophenyl-3-p-nitroophenyl-2-propene-1-one][9], [1(p-aminophenyl)-3-p-chlorophenyl-2-propene-1-one][10] and [1(p-aminophenyl)-3-p-nitrophenyl-2-propene-1-one][11], were synthesised by condensation of synthesised p-acetylphenylbenzene- sulphonamide, p-acetylphenylurea and p-acetyl-p'-(N-methylamino)azobenzene, with p-chlorobenzaldehyde and p nitrobenzaldehyde in basic media respectively.
All synthesised compounds are characterized by its melting points, FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and Mass spectral analysis.
All synthesised compounds are examined their antimicrobial activities against Gram-Ve bactria (Serratia marcescens, Pseudmonas aeroginosa) and Gram+Ve bacterial (Stphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes), and Candida albicans fungi.
Result showed good to moderate inhibition effect against some bacteria and fungi, in comparison with some pharmaceutical antibiotic and antifungal treatments like Cephalexin, Amoxicillin, Tetracycline, Lincomycine, Nystatine and Fluconazole respectively

A multimodal deep learning framework using local feature representations for face recognition
YesThe most recent face recognition systems are
mainly dependent on feature representations obtained using
either local handcrafted-descriptors, such as local binary patterns
(LBP), or use a deep learning approach, such as deep
belief network (DBN). However, the former usually suffers
from the wide variations in face images, while the latter
usually discards the local facial features, which are proven
to be important for face recognition. In this paper, a novel
framework based on merging the advantages of the local
handcrafted feature descriptors with the DBN is proposed to
address the face recognition problem in unconstrained conditions.
Firstly, a novel multimodal local feature extraction
approach based on merging the advantages of the Curvelet
transform with Fractal dimension is proposed and termed
the Curvelet–Fractal approach. The main motivation of this
approach is that theCurvelet transform, a newanisotropic and
multidirectional transform, can efficiently represent themain
structure of the face (e.g., edges and curves), while the Fractal
dimension is one of the most powerful texture descriptors
for face images. Secondly, a novel framework is proposed,
termed the multimodal deep face recognition (MDFR)framework,
to add feature representations by training aDBNon top
of the local feature representations instead of the pixel intensity
representations. We demonstrate that representations acquired by the proposed MDFR framework are complementary
to those acquired by the Curvelet–Fractal approach.
Finally, the performance of the proposed approaches has
been evaluated by conducting a number of extensive experiments
on four large-scale face datasets: the SDUMLA-HMT,
FERET, CAS-PEAL-R1, and LFW databases. The results
obtained from the proposed approaches outperform other
state-of-the-art of approaches (e.g., LBP, DBN, WPCA) by
achieving new state-of-the-art results on all the employed
datasets
Optimizing automated characterization of liver fibrosis histological images by investigating color spaces at different resolutions
Texture analysis (TA) of histological images has recently received attention as an automated method of characterizing liver fibrosis. The colored staining methods used to identify different tissue components reveal various patterns that contribute in different ways to the digital texture of the image. A histological digital image can be represented with various color spaces. The approximation processes of pixel values that are carried out while converting between different color spaces can affect image texture and subsequently could influence the performance of TA. Conventional TA is carried out on grey scale images, which are a luminance approximation to the original RGB (Red, Green, and Blue) space. Currently, grey scale is considered sufficient for characterization of fibrosis but this may not be the case for sophisticated assessment of fibrosis or when resolution conditions vary. This paper investigates the accuracy of TA results on three color spaces, conventional grey scale, RGB, and Hue-Saturation-Intensity (HSI), at different resolutions. The results demonstrate that RGB is the most accurate in texture classification of liver images, producing better results, most notably at low resolution. Furthermore, the green channel, which is dominated by collagen fiber deposition, appears to provide most of the features for characterizing fibrosis images. The HSI space demonstrated a high percentage error for the majority of texture methods at all resolutions, suggesting that this space is insufficient for fibrosis characterization. The grey scale space produced good results at high resolution; however, errors increased as resolution decreased
Echinacoside ameliorates hepatic fibrosis and tumor invasion in rats with thioacetamide-induced hepatocellular carcinoma
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) affects approximately 800,000 individuals globally each year. Despite advancements in HCC treatments, there is still a pressing need to identify new drugs that can combat resistance. One potential option is echinacoside, a natural caffeic acid glycoside with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, and antidiabetic properties. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the ability of echinacoside to exhibit antitumor activity against HCC in rats through ameliorating hepatic fibrosis and tumor invasion. Rats were given thioacetamide to induce HCC, and some were given 30 mg/kg of echinacoside twice a week for 16 weeks. The liver impairment was assessed by measuring serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) and examining liver sections stained with Masson trichrome or anti-transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 antibodies. The hepatic expression of mRNA and protein levels of TGF-β1, β-catenin, SMAD4, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9), phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3K), mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), connective tissue growth factor 2 (CCN2), E-Cadherin, platelets derived growth factor (PDGF)-B and fascin were also analyzed. Echinacoside improved the survival rate of rats by decreasing serum AFP and the number of hepatic nodules. Examination of micro-images indicated that echinacoside can reduce fibrosis. It also significantly decreased the expression of TGF-β1, β-catenin, SMAD4, MMP9, PI3K, mTOR, CCN2, PDGF-B, and fascin while enhancing the expression of E-Cadherin. In conclusion, echinacoside exhibits a protective effect against HCC by increasing survival rates and decreasing tumor growth. It also acts as an inhibitor of the hepatic tissue fibrosis pathway by reducing the expression of TGF-β1, β-catenin, SMAD4, PI3K, CCN2, PDGF-B and mTOR. Additionally, it prevents tumor invasion by suppressing MMP9 and fascin, and increasing the expression of E-Cadherin
The (cost-)effectiveness of a lifestyle physical activity intervention in addition to a work style intervention on the recovery from neck and upper limb symptoms in computer workers
BACKGROUND: Neck and upper limb symptoms are frequently reported by computer workers. Work style interventions are most commonly used to reduce work-related neck and upper limb symptoms but lifestyle physical activity interventions are becoming more popular to enhance workers health and reduce work-related symptoms. A combined approach targeting work style and lifestyle physical activity seems promising, but little is known on the effectiveness of such combined interventions. METHODS/DESIGN: The RSI@Work study is a randomised controlled trial that aims to assess the added value of a lifestyle physical activity intervention in addition to a work style intervention to reduce neck and upper limb symptoms in computer workers. Computer workers from seven Dutch companies with frequent or long-term neck and upper limb symptoms in the preceding six months and/or the last two weeks are randomised into three groups: (1) work style group, (2) work style and physical activity group, or (3) control group. The work style intervention consists of six group meetings in a six month period that take place at the workplace, during work time, and under the supervision of a specially trained counsellor. The goal of this intervention is to stimulate workplace adjustment and to improve body posture, the number and quality of breaks and coping behaviour with regard to high work demands. In the combined (work style and physical activity) intervention the additional goal is to increase moderate to heavy physical activity. The control group receives usual care. Primary outcome measures are degree of recovery, pain intensity, disability, number of days with neck and upper limb symptoms, and number of months without neck and upper limb symptoms. Outcome measures will be assessed at baseline and six and 12 months after randomisation. Cost-effectiveness of the group meetings will be assessed using an employer's perspective. DISCUSSION: This study will be one of the first to assess the added value of a lifestyle physical activity intervention in addition to a work style intervention in reducing neck and upper limb symptoms of computer workers. The influence of culture on entrepreneurial intentions: a Nigerian university graduates’ perspective
Culture influences entrepreneurship and it is becoming essential to determine its role in entrepreneurship development in different countries especially in those with cultural diversities like Nigeria where there are less studies. Nigeria included a compulsory variant of entrepreneurship education in the curriculum of universities to nurture entrepreneurial mind-sets. Despite the general recognition of the instrumentality and significance of entrepreneurship, there are no studies evaluating the programme or the role of culture in entrepreneurial intention development. This study applied an extended version of the theory of planned behaviour to examine the interaction between culture and entrepreneurship how this impact on the entrepreneurial intentions of graduates. This article analysed and reported results of the survey of 409 graduates from six universities using structural equation modelling-AMOS, analysis of moment structures. Findings indicate that culture has both direct and indirect effect on graduates’ entrepreneurial intentions. The study has implications for policy and practice

Classification of Types of Stuttering Symptoms Based on Brain Activity
Among the non-fluencies seen in speech, some are more typical (MT) of stuttering speakers, whereas others are less typical (LT) and are common to both stuttering and fluent speakers. No neuroimaging work has evaluated the neural basis for grouping these symptom types. Another long-debated issue is which type (LT, MT) whole-word repetitions (WWR) should be placed in. In this study, a sentence completion task was performed by twenty stuttering patients who were scanned using an event-related design. This task elicited stuttering in these patients. Each stuttered trial from each patient was sorted into the MT or LT types with WWR put aside. Pattern classification was employed to train a patient-specific single trial model to automatically classify each trial as MT or LT using the corresponding fMRI data. This model was then validated by using test data that were independent of the training data. In a subsequent analysis, the classification model, just established, was used to determine which type the WWR should be placed in. The results showed that the LT and the MT could be separated with high accuracy based on their brain activity. The brain regions that made most contribution to the separation of the types were: the left inferior frontal cortex and bilateral precuneus, both of which showed higher activity in the MT than in the LT; and the left putamen and right cerebellum which showed the opposite activity pattern. The results also showed that the brain activity for WWR was more similar to that of the LT and fluent speech than to that of the MT. These findings provide a neurological basis for separating the MT and the LT types, and support the widely-used MT/LT symptom grouping scheme. In addition, WWR play a similar role as the LT, and thus should be placed in the LT type
