In Turkish Classical Literature which has its own particular aesthetic properties, the aim of art takes the most important place. Having these aspects, this literature which was accepted for centuries by the society in which it was realised has been criticised from Tanzimat until present for being alienated from social life. Despite the generally accepted sense of art Divan poets expressed in their work the social matters which take place in the society they live. As an example of this it seems that this literature which has the poems of yuf redif having social criticism is not completely far from social matters

This article aims to document the findings of a professional development intervention study seeking to promote in-service preschool teachers’ professional growth about education for sustainability (EfS) through media literacy (ML). The overall aim of this year-long action research project (based on the Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate or ADDIE approach) was to foster teachers' knowledge and awareness regarding EfS via a professional development program incorporating media literacy education. Four preschool teachers participated in the professional development program. Participants’ in-class EfS implementations before and after the professional development program were examined utilizing interview, stimulated recall interviews, field notes and content analysis of teacher daily and monthly plans. The principal outcome of the study was that the proposed professional development program does, indeed, lead to the growth of the early childhood teachers' EfS knowledge and awareness. In the short term, examination of participants’ pre/post intervention teaching activities indicated that fostering teachers’ ML skills helped when designing EfS activities since they were able to access, analyze & evaluate and create EfS related media resources more effectively. Longer-term, the teachers involved in the study incorporated an increased number of EfS related activities in-class, as evidenced by their post-intervention daily and monthly plans.

Introduction: pulmonary hypertension (PH) is one of the leading causes of mortality in the world. This study aimed to determine the ratio distribution and etiological characteristics of PH in Somalia-Turkey Training and Research Hospital. Methods: the study was designed as a hospital-based retrospective observational study and included 260 patients who were diagnosed with PH by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in the cardiology outpatient clinic in Somalia-Turkey Training and Research Hospital in Mogadishu. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and data on morbidity were retrieved from clinical records. Results: the echocardiographic prevalence of PH was found to be 18% (n=260). PH due to left heart disease was the most common form of PH (n=151, 58%), followed by PH due to lung disease (n=61, 23%), group 1 PH (n=38, 16%), group 5 PH (n=7, 2%), and chronic thromboembolic PH (CTEPH) (n=3, 1%). Conclusion: the present study showed that the prevalence of PH in Somalia is relatively higher than the rest of the world's average. The distribution characteristics of the disease could be related to the region-specific differences of the causative diseases. Further studies are needed to better capture the epidemiology of PH in Somalia

The on-going criminalisation of women peace activists and targeted violence against Turkey’s LGBTI+ community weakens any hope of a gendered perspective becoming a priority for the Turkish state. Nisan Alıcı, Güley Bor and Güneş Daşlı detail the effects of the long-standing lack of political will to overcome this, now exacerbated by the effects of the coronavirus, and call for continued support and inclusion of individuals and organisations working for a gender just peace in Turkey

THE EFFECT OF THEMATIC ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ON THE STUDENTS’ RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOR TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENT

The international meetings held have repeatedly demonstrated the importance of environmental education. The success of the thematic education approach has been demonstrated by previous studies and it is thought that this approach will also be successful in environmental education. Starting from here, in this study, the effect of the thematic environmental education activities on students' responsible behavior towards the environment was investigated. The study was carried out with 5th grade students studying in a public secondary school in the 2022-2023 academic year. In the research conducted in the quasi-experimental model, data were collected by applying the pretest-posttest to the non-random experimental and control groups. The data were obtained from the Behavior Towards the Environment Test form. The pretests and posttests applied to the experimental and control groups were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis (mean and standard deviation). Afterwards, the assumptions of the independent samples t-test were examined to examine whether the differences observed between the groups were statistically significant. According to the findings of the study, a positive significant difference was found in the environmentally responsible behaviors of the students studying with thematic environmental education activities compared to the students studying with the current curriculum

Implementation of Education for Sustainability in Turkish Pre-Service Teachers' Practicum

    Get PDF
In this study, we explored early childhood education pre-service teachers' (ECEPTs') understanding and pedagogical application of education for sustainability (EfS) by critically analyzing EfS implementation during ECEPTs' practicum. The study examined the challenges and critical aspects of EfS practices in the practicum, and the relationships among mentor teachers, academic mentors, and ECEPTs. A multiple case study methodology was employed involving two purposefully distinct universities with 14 participant students across the two university case study sites. Initially, 22 practicum activity plans for each ECEPT were examined via content analysis; then, the students were individually interviewed about the plans and their implications. Subsequent analysis indicated negligible differences between the two universities' student activity plans regarding quality (aspects of EfS) and quantity (frequency of EfS activities). The students self-reflected about their EfS understandings and implementation. Additionally, they remarked that academic mentors' and mentor teachers' stances influenced them either positively or negatively during their workplace-based learning. They also pointed to the absence of a whole-institution approach, not only at the practicum school but also at the university level

A result cache invalidation scheme for web search engines

Ankara : The Department of Computer Engineering and the Graduate School of Engineering and Science of Bilkent University, 2011.Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 2011.Includes bibliographical references leaves 51-55.The result cache is a vital component for the efficiency of large-scale web search engines, and maintaining the freshness of cached query results is a current research challenge. As a remedy to this problem, our work proposes a new mechanism to identify queries whose cached results are stale. The basic idea behind our mechanism is to maintain and compare the generation time of query results with the update times of posting lists and documents to decide on staleness of query results. The proposed technique is evaluated using a Wikipedia document collection with real update information and a real-life query log. Throughout the experiments, we compare our approach with two baseline strategies from literature together with a detailed evaluation. We show that our technique has good prediction accuracy, relative to the baseline based on the time-to-live (TTL) mechanism. Moreover, it is easy to implement and it incurs less processing overhead on the system relative to a recently proposed, more sophisticated invalidation mechanism.Alıcı, ŞadiyeM.S

Macro explanatory factors of Turkish tourism companies’ stock returns

    Get PDF
This study examines whether the stock prices of Turkish tourism companies respond to growth in eight macro-economic variables namely, consumer price index, imports, exchange rate, consumer confidence index, oil price, money supply, foreign tourist arrivals, and monthly stock market return. By applying the Granger causality procedure, we find that growth in the consumer confidence index and imports could Granger cause tourism companies’ stock returns among eight macro factors in Turkey during the 2005 to 2013 period. After considering the structural break that occurred in 2007, the pre-break results indicate that the consumer confidence index, exchange rate, and foreign tourist arrivals could Granger cause tourism stock returns. However, the results in the post-structural break period reveal that only growths in oil prices and imports are significant

    Entropy in Born-Infeld gravity

    Get PDF
There is a class of higher derivative gravity theories that are in some sense natural extensions of cosmological Einstein's gravity with a unique maximally symmetric classical vacuum and only a massless spin-2 excitation about the vacuum and no other perturbative modes. These theories are of the Born-Infeld determinant form. We show that the macroscopic dynamical entropy as defined by Wald for bifurcate Killing horizons in these theories are equivalent to the geometric Bekenstein-Hawking entropy (or more properly Gibbons-Hawking entropy for the case of de Sitter spacetime) but given with an effective gravitational constant which encodes all the information about the background spacetime and the underlying theory. We also show that the higher curvature terms increase the entropy. We carry out the computations in generic n dimensions including the particularly interesting limits of three, four and infinite number of dimensions. We also give a preliminary discussion about the black hole entropy in generic dimensions for the Born-Infeld theories
