The dioritic-gabbroic intrusive complex of Susqueda (Montseny–Guilleries massif, Catalonia): lithological units and petrographic features

    Get PDF
The intrusive complex of Susqueda constitutes the biggest association of plutonic mafic rocks of the Catalonian Coastal Ranges. It is located in the contact between the large calc-alkaline granitoid intrusions and the Paleozoic country rocks affected by Hercynian regional metamorphism. Intrusive relationships denote contemporaneity of basic magmas and, at least, an acid magma intrusion. A significant part of the outcrop consists of a heterogeneous mixing zone between the two magmas (mingling). The intrusion is made up of two oval-shaped outcrops about 3 km long, elongated in the N–S direction and separated by a NW–SE fault. In these units, the compositions of the plutonic rocks range from quartz diorites and tonalites (in the mixing zones) up to olivine hornblendites. Even though its distribution is quite heterogeneous, a preliminary cartography was made including the different petrographic types in three main groups: 1) hornblende gabbros and olivine hornblendites; 2) biotite-hornblende diorites; and 3) heterogeneous mixing zone between hornblende-biotite quartz diorite, granodiorite, and tonalite. The predominant mineral composition consists of plagioclase and amphibole, typical of dioritic rocks. Nevertheless, in a great part of the outcrop the plagioclase widely exceeds the 50% in An, typical of gabbroic rocksEl complejo intrusivo de Susqueda constituye la mayor asociación plutónica de rocas máficas del batolito de las Cordilleras Costeras Catalanas.

Practical guidelines to manage discordant situations of SMN2 copy number in patients with spinal muscular atrophy

Objective Assessment of SMN2 copy number in patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is essential to establish careful genotype-phenotype correlations and predict disease evolution. This issue is becoming crucial in the present scenario of therapeutic advances with the perspective of SMA neonatal screening and early diagnosis to initiate treatment, as this value is critical to stratify patients for clinical trials and to define those eligible to receive medication. Several technical pitfalls and interindividual variations may account for reported discrepancies in the estimation of SMN2 copy number and establishment of phenotype-genotype correlations. Methods We propose a management guide based on a sequence of specified actions once SMN2 copy number is determined for a given patient. Regardless of the method used to estimate the number of SMN2 copies, our approach focuses on the manifestations of the patient to recommend how to proceed in each case. Results We defined situations according to SMN2 copy number in a presymptomatic scenario of screening, in which we predict the possible evolution, and when a symptomatic patient is genetically confirmed. Unexpected discordant cases include patients having a single SMN2 copy but noncongenital disease forms, 2 SMN2 copies compatible with type II or III SMA, and 3 or 4 copies of the gene showing more severe disease than expected. Conclusions Our proposed guideline would help to systematically identify discordant SMA cases that warrant further genetic investigation. The SMN2 gene, as the main modifier of SMA phenotype, deserves a more in-depth study to provide more accurate genotype-phenotype correlations

The video game has been one of the phenomena with the greatest impact on the entire social fabric, and especially among young people. Therefore, it is essential to understand the interaction between the players and the video game itself. However, few instruments have been designed to assess the types of players in the adolescent population. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to validate the Gamification User Types Hexad Scale for the Spanish adolescent population. The sample of participants consisted of 1345 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18. To evaluate the psychometric properties of the scale, a confirmatory factor analysis and a multi-group analysis of invariance by sex were performed. The results provide evidence of a valid and reliable six-factor instrument to measure the types of players in the Spanish adolescent population, regardless of their sex

Between Level Up and Game Over: A Systematic Literature Review of Gamification in Education

Educational gamification consists of the use of game elements and game design techniques in the educational context. The objective of this study is to examine the existing evidence on the impact of educational gamification on student motivation and academic performance in the last five years in order to analyze its distribution over time, educational level, variables, and most used game elements, and know the advantages of its implementation in the classroom. For this, a systematic review is proposed through the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology in three multidisciplinary databases, through an exhaustive search with inclusion and exclusion criteria on quantitative experimental studies that explore gamification in educational centers, which provide information about the most current lines of research. Fourteen studies were included in this review. These used experimental or quasi-experimental designs. Most of them report gamification as a valid learning strategy. The results support the conclusion that educational gamification has a potential impact on the academic performance, commitment, and motivation of students. Therefore, this study implies the need to expand research on the needs and challenges of students when learning with gamified techniques
