The Current Perspectives of Stem Cell Therapy in Orthopedic Surgery
Context: Musculoskeletal injuries may be painful, troublesome, life limiting and also one of the global health problems. There has been considerable amount of interest during the past two decades to stem cells and tissue engineering techniques in orthopedic surgery, especially to manage special and compulsive injuries within the musculoskeletal system.
Evidence Acquisition: The aim of this study was to present a literature review regarding the most recent progress in stem cell procedures and current indications in orthopedics clinical care practice. The Medline and PubMed library databases were searched for the articles related with stem cell procedures in the field of orthopedic surgery and additionally the reference list of each article was also included to provide a comprehensive evaluation.
Results: Various sources of stem cells have been studied for orthopedics clinical care practice. Stem cell therapy has successfully used for major orthopedic procedures in terms of bone-joint injuries (fractures-bone defects, nonunion, and spinal injuries), osteoarthritis-cartilage defects, ligament-tendon injuries, femoral head osteonecrosis and osteogenesis imperfecta. Stem cells have also used in bone tissue engineering in combining with the scaffolds and provided faster and better healing of tissues.
Conclusions: Large amounts of preclinical studies have been made of stem cells and there is an increasing interest to perform these studies within the human population but preclinical studies are insufficient; therefore, much more and efficient studies should be conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of stem cells
MAC Protocols for Wireless Mesh Networks with Multi-beam Antennas: A Survey
Multi-beam antenna technologies have provided lots of promising solutions to
many current challenges faced in wireless mesh networks. The antenna can
establish several beamformings simultaneously and initiate concurrent
transmissions or receptions using multiple beams, thereby increasing the
overall throughput of the network transmission. Multi-beam antenna has the
ability to increase the spatial reuse, extend the transmission range, improve
the transmission reliability, as well as save the power consumption.
Traditional Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for wireless network largely
relied on the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function(DCF) mechanism,
however, IEEE 802.11 DCF cannot take the advantages of these unique
capabilities provided by multi-beam antennas. This paper surveys the MAC
protocols for wireless mesh networks with multi-beam antennas. The paper first
discusses some basic information in designing multi-beam antenna system and MAC
protocols, and then presents the main challenges for the MAC protocols in
wireless mesh networks compared with the traditional MAC protocols. A
qualitative comparison of the existing MAC protocols is provided to highlight
their novel features, which provides a reference for designing the new MAC
protocols. To provide some insights on future research, several open issues of
MAC protocols are discussed for wireless mesh networks using multi-beam
antennas.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, Future of Information and Communication

ABSense: Sensing Electromagnetic Waves on Metasurfaces via Ambient Compilation of Full Absorption
Metasurfaces constitute effective media for manipulating and transforming
impinging EM waves. Related studies have explored a series of impactful MS
capabilities and applications in sectors such as wireless communications,
medical imaging and energy harvesting. A key-gap in the existing body of work
is that the attributes of the EM waves to-be-controlled (e.g., direction,
polarity, phase) are known in advance. The present work proposes a practical
solution to the EM wave sensing problem using the intelligent and networked MS
counterparts-the HyperSurfaces (HSFs), without requiring dedicated field
sensors. An nano-network embedded within the HSF iterates over the possible MS
configurations, finding the one that fully absorbs the impinging EM wave, hence
maximizing the energy distribution within the HSF. Using a distributed
consensus approach, the nano-network then matches the found configuration to
the most probable EM wave traits, via a static lookup table that can be created
during the HSF manufacturing. Realistic simulations demonstrate the potential
of the proposed scheme. Moreover, we show that the proposed workflow is the
first-of-its-kind embedded EM compiler, i.e., an autonomic HSF that can
translate high-level EM behavior objectives to the corresponding, low-level EM
actuation commands.Comment: Publication: Proceedings of ACM NANOCOM 2019. This work was funded by

QoS Challenges in Wireless Sensor Networked Robotics
Wireless sensor networks and mobile robotics are two hot research topics. Integrating them leads to a wide range of new applications in many different environments such as terrestrial, underwater, underground and aerial. Where sensor networks are mainly used for large-scale monitoring and control, mobile robotics are used for performing fine-scale actions and automation. Network heterogeneity together with stringent Quality of Service (QoS) demands from applications such as voice and video make QoS support very challenging. Therefore, this paper investigates the QoS challenges in wireless sensor networked robotics and presents a novel QoS framework as solution to cope with these challenges
Sensor Data Collection through Unmanned Aircraft Gateways
Current addressing and service discovery schemes in mobile networks are not well-suited to multihop disconnected networks. This paper describes an implementation of a highly mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) that may never experience end-to-end connectivity. Spe-cial gateway nodes are described which are responsible for intelligently routing messages to their intended destination(s). These gateway nodes qualify their links and announce their status to the MANET, a simple approach to service discovery that is effective in this implementation. This implementation has been tested in an outdoor environment. I
XR-RF Imaging Enabled by Software-Defined Metasurfaces and Machine Learning: Foundational Vision, Technologies and Challenges
We present a new approach to Extended Reality (XR), denoted as iCOPYWAVES,
which seeks to offer naturally low-latency operation and cost-effectiveness,
overcoming the critical scalability issues faced by existing solutions.
iCOPYWAVES is enabled by emerging PWEs, a recently proposed technology in
wireless communications. Empowered by intelligent (meta)surfaces, PWEs
transform the wave propagation phenomenon into a software-defined process. We
leverage PWEs to i) create, and then ii) selectively copy the scattered RF
wavefront of an object from one location in space to another, where a machine
learning module, accelerated by FPGAs, translates it to visual input for an XR
headset using PWEdriven, RF imaging principles (XR-RF). This makes for an XR
system whose operation is bounded in the physical layer and, hence, has the
prospects for minimal end-to-end latency. Over large distances,
RF-to-fiber/fiber-to-RF is employed to provide intermediate connectivity. The
paper provides a tutorial on the iCOPYWAVES system architecture and workflow. A
proof-of-concept implementation via simulations is provided, demonstrating the
reconstruction of challenging objects in iCOPYWAVES produced computer graphics
Numerical study of heat source/sink effects on dissipative magnetic nanofluid flow from a non-linear inclined stretching/shrinking sheet
This paper numerically investigates radiative magnetohydrodynamic mixed convection boundary layer flow of nanofluids over a nonlinear inclined stretching/shrinking sheet in the presence of heat source/sink and viscous dissipation. The Rosseland approximation is adopted for thermal radiation effects and the Maxwell-Garnetts and Brinkman models are used for the effective thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of the nanofluids respectively. The governing coupled nonlinear momentum and thermal boundary layer equations are rendered into a system of ordinary differential equations via local similarity transformations with appropriate boundary conditions. The non-dimensional, nonlinear, well-posed boundary value problem is then solved with the Keller box implicit finite difference scheme. The emerging thermo-physical dimensionless parameters governing the flow are the magnetic field parameter, volume fraction parameter, power-law stretching parameter, Richardson number, suction/injection parameter, Eckert number and heat source/sink parameter. A detailed study of the influence of these parameters on velocity and temperature distributions is conducted. Additionally the evolution of skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number values with selected parameters is presented. Verification of numerical solutions is achieved via benchmarking with some limiting cases documented in previously reported results, and generally very good correlation is demonstrated. This investigation is relevant to fabrication of magnetic nanomaterials and high temperature treatment of magnetic nano-polymers
