Teacher's attitudes toward their job and professional development in Turkey : an EFL perspective

    Get PDF
Various studies investigating the factors that affect professional development have found that both extrinsic factors such as pay and promotion and intrinsic rewards such as pride in work can supply motivation for professional development. This study aims to investigate the attitudes of Turkish EFL teachers toward their teaching career and professional development. In doing so, it also explores what cultural and/or political factors may affect Turkish EFL teachers' professional development. Data came from semi-structured interviews administered to 31 teachers working in 5 different English medium high schools in Istanbul. The findings indicate that these Turkish EFL teachers have positive feelings toward their careers and professional development to the extent that their personal values, abilities, and accomplishments match their expectations of the values, abilities, and accomplishments that should characterize a teacher. Moreover, the results also indicate that teachers' professional accomplishments, together with the recognition they receive from administrators and supervisors have a strong positive relationship to their attitudes toward professional development. Finally, similar to the findings of studies conducted in various cultural contexts, this research suggests that, extrinsic and intrinsic factors must receive complex interpretation in relation to work satisfaction of teachers and their attitudes toward professional development. Professional development has attracted increasing attention in recent years. It has been recognised that institutional conditions - such as the need for improving quality - and individual needs of teachers - such as job satisfaction and personal/professional growth - are the two inextricable dimensions of professional development.peer-reviewe

The contemporary theory of economization has strongly neglected changes in moral values and consumer orientations as an explanatory variable. The theory explains the current trend towards a market-based model of economic governance in terms of an interplay between two developments: the modification of political and entrepreneurial goals, and changes in economic conditions. In this article I show that changes in moral values and consumer orientations can also contribute to the emergence of economization processes. In order to better understand the moral dimension of this phenomenon, economization is conceptualized as the legitimation and legalization of the exchange of goods. Building on this, I develop four ideal-typical variants of economization which are especially useful to conceive state-driven market formation and economization as a process of detraditionalization. The approach outlined here helps to understand the interrelationship between economization and societal modernization and thus paves the way for a sociology of economization with a stronger moral basis

This study aims to determine the relationship between social connectedness level and just world belief of prospective teachers in terms of various variables. This study adopted a correlational survey model. 318 volunteer prospective teachers from Department of Visual Arts and Music Education at Faculty of Fine Arts, and Department of Physical Education at Faculty of Education of Ankara and Gazi Universities participated in this study. The General Just World Belief Scale developed by Dalbert (1999) and adapted to Turkish by Göregenli (2003) and the Social Connectedness Scale developed by Lee and Robbins and adapted to Turkish by Duru (2007) were used as a data collection tool. As a result of the research, it was determined that the general just world beliefs of the prospective teachers were at a moderate level and their social connectedness was low. In addition, the general just world beliefs and social connectedness levels of the participants in the 1st and 2nd grades were significantly higher than those in the 3rd and 4th grades. There was no significant relationship between general just world beliefs and social connectedness levels of prospective teachers

INVESTIGATING THE COMPARATIVE EFFECTS OF SUSTAINED SILENT READING, ASSISTED REPEATED READING, AND TRADITIONAL READING

    Get PDF
This quasi-experimental study aims to investigate the effects of Sustained Silent Reading (SSR), Assisted Repeated Reading (ARR), and Traditional Reading (TR) instructions integrated into an EFL reading program on EFL reading comprehension, silent reading rate, reading motivation, and attitudes toward EFL reading, by also addressing the potential effect of proficiency level. Adopting a mixed-method pretest-posttest research design, this 10-week study was conducted with mixed-proficiency university-level Turkish EFL learners divided into three experimental groups. A method incorporating 150-minute SSR or ARR instructions into the 150-minute intensive reading instruction in two groups was implemented, as compared against a TR group that received 300-minute traditional intensive reading instruction weekly. Data came from a reading comprehension and rate test, reading motivation questionnaire, participant reflections, and interviews. Findings indicated that SSR yielded significant benefits for reading comprehension of both low and high-proficiency participants. Moreover, SSR and ARR showed positive effects on intrinsic reading motivation, whereas TR contributed slightly to extrinsic reading motivation. Regarding the possible effect of proficiency, while SSR yielded more advantages for higher-proficiency learners, ARR and TR were comparatively more beneficial for lower-proficiency learners. Implications for pedagogy and future research for university-level EFL reading classes are discussed

Pen/paper and electronic portfolios : an effective tool for developing reflective thinking of Turkish EFL student teachers?

    Get PDF
This study investigates the role of portfolio development on the improvement of the reflective thinking ability of five Turkish EFL (English as a Foreign Language) student teachers from a University in Turkey. In this case study, participants’ reflective papers written for their pen/paper and electronic portfolios and their interviews were analysed. The results showed that the process of preparing a pen/paper portfolio provided a useful approach to enhancing professional development, with a few negative comments regarding the time involved in keeping the portfolio, positive comments regarding the support and collaboration that peers provided, as well as its contribution to their professional development in terms of reflective thinking and self-confidence. The results of the interview analysis also supported the notion that student teachers generally responded favourably to the development of a written portfolio. On the other hand, the process of preparing an electronic portfolio did not enhance reflective thinking since the student teachers were more concerned about the technicalities and the layout of the electronic portfolios rather than the content of the artefacts.peer-reviewe

Diabetes is a chronic disease that increases mortality and morbidity with its complications, decreases the quality of life and has considerable treatment costs and a high prevalence. One of the most significant goals of diabetes treatment is to prevent, delay or control its complications. Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 enzyme inhibitors (DPP4 inhibitors), which is a relatively new drug category and whose effects on the mechanisms of action and complications are still being investigated, are used together with other antidiabetic drugs. This study aims to investigate the effect of DPP4 inhibitors on diabetes complications. This study was carried out with 197 patients admitted to the Endocrinology outpatient clinics of Başkent University, Faculty of Medicine between 28/04/2011 and 31/12/2018 by calculating the sample size. The results revealed that all diabetic complications were less common in the patient group where DPP4 inhibitors were added to the treatment compared to the insulin group. It is thought that DPP4 inhibitors, found to reduce the rate of diabetes-related complications, can also be prescribed by primary health care physicians, which is a necessary step in reducing diabetes-related morbidity rates and treatment costs

Perianal fistula imaging : a comparison between two-channel superficial Flex coil and eight-channel body coil

    Get PDF
Purpose: Perianal fistula is an important health problem with devastating morbidity. For diagnosis and prevention of recurrence, perianal fistula imaging (PFI) is crucial. The aim of this study was to investigate if a Flex-M superficial coil images would provide more information than images obtained with a phased-array body coil in PFI. Material and methods: Thirty-one fistulas of 29 patients were prospectively evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging. A phased-array body coil was used in all patients as in routine practice, and sequences with Flex-M coil were also obtained. Afterwards, images were evaluated by two experienced radiologists who were blinded to the patients, coil and also to each other. The site of internal and external openings, and presence or absence of abscess and secondary tracts were recorded. Results: The conspicuity of images was better with the Flex-M coil. Both radiologists saw more internal openings with the Flex-M coil. Cohen's κ value was 0.100 (p = 0.201) for Reader 1 and 0.110 (p = 0.361) for Reader 2 between these two coils. Additionally, numerically more internal/external openings and secondary tracts were seen by both readers. Interobserver variability was not statistically significant, and Cohen's κ values signifyied good concordance between readers. Conclusions: In our study we showed that multichannel superficial phased-array coils improved imaging quality in PFI. We think that Flex-M coil can easily be used in routine clinical practice to gather better images of perianal fistulas
