    EMPOWERING THE USE OF MOBILE-BASED VOCABULARY NOTEBOOKS

    The high demand on the mobile devices like smart phones and Ipads in daily life has given a rise to mobile learning trends in foreign language learning. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in vocabulary achievement level of students keeping mobile-based and paper-based vocabulary notebooks in English language learning. The study was designed through mixed method where a pre-post test control group quasi-experimental study was conducted. Data were collected through a vocabulary achievement test used as pre and post tests. The results indicated mobile-based vocabulary notebooks have positive effects on students’ vocabulary achievement

    This descriptive study identified engineering students’ learning styles and the differences in the learning styles according to sex and department. To determine the differences in the learning styles of engineering students, the Turkish version of the Index of Learning Style (ILS) developed by Felder-Solomon for engineering students was used. The form was administered to 400 engineering students at METU. The differences in learning style preferences according to sex and department factors were assessed via Chisquare tests. The results showed that engineering students are active, sensing, visual and global learners rather than reflective, intuitive, verbal and sequential. The Chi-square results did not indicate any significant results in all of the four learning style dimensions in terms of sex and department.Tarama türündeki bu çalışmada mühendislik öğrencilerinin öğrenme stilleri ve cinsiyet ve bölümlerine göre öğrenme stillerindeki farklılık incelenmiştir. Mühendislik öğrencilerinin öğrenme stillerini belirlemek için Felder-Soloman tarafından mühendislik öğrencileri için geliştirilen Öğrenme Stilleri Index’i (ÖSI) Türkçe’ye uyarlanmış ve 400 ODTÜ mühendislik öğrencisi üzerinde uygulanmıştır. Öğrencilerin ÖSI’den elde ettikleri 4 öğrenme stilindeki tercihlerinin cinsiyet ve bölüm faktörlerine göre farklılaşıp farklılaşmadığını belirlemek için ki-kare testi uygulanmıştır. Sonuçlar, mühendislik öğrencilerinin genel olarak aktif, duyusal, görsel, bütünsel öğrenenler olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Yansıtıcı, sezgisel, sözel ve ardışık öğrenenlerin sayısının ise daha az olduğu görülmüştür. Ki kare sonuçları 4 öğrenme stilinde de cinsiyet ve bölüm bakımından mühendislik öğrencileri arasında anlamlı bir fark olmadığını ortaya koymuştur

    The Development of an Achievement Test for the Principles and Methods of Instruction Course

    DergiPark: 494903tredTheaim of this study was to develop an Achievement Test in the Principles andMethods of Instruction Course. 14 objectives were developed in accordance withthe aims and goals of the course as determined by the Council of HigherEducation. The first form of the achievement test which consisted of 49 items wasapplied to 486 sophomore students who took the Principles and Methods ofInstruction Course at the spring semester of 2016-2017 academic year. TestAnalysis Program (TAP, version 14. 7. 4) was used to examine the itemdiscrimination indices, item difficulty indices and reliability coefficient ofthe achievement test. After conducting the analysis, the difficulty indices ofthe remaining items ranged between ‘0.15-0.74’ with a mean difficulty index of0.51. The item discrimination indices were between ‘0.21-0.57’ with a meandifficulty index of 0.37. Finally, the KR-20 value was found to be 0.78

    A NEW APPROACH IN HIGHER EDUCATION: THE PERCEPTIONS OF PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS RELATED TO FLIPPED LEARNING

    The purpose of this study was to develop and implement flipped learning materials in the Principles and Methods of Instruction course and investigate the perceptions of pre-service teachers about flipped learning. This study was conducted in the fall semester of 2017-2018 for 11 weeks at a public university located in the Aegean Region in Turkey. This study employed a mixed method research design. There were 30 pre-service teachers in the flipped learning group. In the current study, student questionnaire and interview schedule were implemented. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistical analysis techniques. For the analysis of the data, SPSS 22.0 was used and alpha level was determined as .05. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed by using both the content and descriptive analysis techniques. The findings of the study showed that pre-service teachers mostly had positive perceptions about flipped learning processes and materials. They agreed that flipped learning supported and facilitated learning was effective in order to practice theoretical knowledge and contributed to personal development and self-enhancement.     Seventh Grade Students’ Understanding of Linear Measurement: What Has Been Learned About Linear Measurement in Seven Years of Schooling Process?

    AbstractThe present study aimed to investigate the extent to which students comprehend the basic concepts and skills of linear measurement. The data were some part of a larger study and collected from 134 seventh grade students attending a public primary school in a medium socio-economic area of Ankara, Turkey through a set of tasks that were designed to challenge students to apply their knowledge and skills about linear measurement in different contexts. Results indicated that an alarming number of the students started with 1, instead of zero, while measuring with a ruler. Most of them did not comprehend the nature of linear measurement. Hence, students’ understanding of linear measurement was observed to be still superficial and inadequate, even though linear measurement was introduced to students in the first grade

    The relationship between cognitive distortions and forgiveness in romantic relationships

    The purpose of the present study was to find out the relationship between cognitive distortions and forgiveness in romantic relationships of college students. The sample of the study was 340 college students who have a romantic relationship at a state university in Turkey. The purposeful sampling method was carried out in this correlational study. In order to collect data, three instruments were utilized: Interpersonal Cognitive Distortions Scale (ICDS), Heartland Forgiveness Scale and Demographic Data Form. The scales were put online to survey.metu.edu.tr and students having a romantic relationship were asked to complete the scale. In the present study, canonical correlation was conducted through SPSS 22 statistical package for data analysis in order to assess the relationship between two sets of variables: “Interpersonal Rejection”, “Unrealistic Relationship Expectation” and “Interpersonal Misperception” are the subscales of interpersonal cognitive distortions on one set and “Forgiveness of Self”, “Forgiveness of Others” and “Forgiveness of Situations” are the subscales of forgiveness on the other set. The study was significant because it might fill the gap in the literature and counseling field in terms of finding the relationship between two sets of variables to give a light to possible predictors in future research studying romantic relationships
