    Diagnosis and surveillance of rinderpest using reverse transcription - PCR

    PCR technique was used as an alternative method to detect evidence of rinderpest virus for diagnosis and in epidemiological surveys. Viral RNA was purified in 20 to 30 min using a commercial kit (RNaid (BIO 101). Primers used mapped in the nucleocapsid protein gene of rinderpest virus and gave specific and sensitive amplification from pathological samples. The size of the amplified fragment was 297 bp and the result was confirmed using internal non-radioactive probe SB1. The specificity of the PCRproducts was also confirmed by cleavage using restriction enzyme RsaI to give a major band of 200 bp

    High prevalence of ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in clinical samples from central CĂ´te d'Ivoire

    Objectives: Infections caused by multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales pose a significant challenge to clinical patient care, particularly in resource-constrained settings where epidemiological data on antimicrobial resistance are scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of extended spectrum beta-lactamase-(ESBL)-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae among clinical samples from a teaching hospital in Bouaké, central Côte d’Ivoire. Methods: Clinical specimens were collected from sterile and non-sterile body sites and were subjected to microbiological diagnostics (April 2016-June 2017). The antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of K. pneumoniae were analysed using automated resistance testing and double-disk diffusion to test for ESBL production. Multiplex PCR was carried out to determine the presence of the resistance-conferring genes blaCTX-M, blaSHV and blaTEM. Results: A total of 107 isolates were included, most of which were obtained from bloodstream (39%; n = 42) and urinary tract infections (39%; n = 42). Among all K. pneumoniae isolates, 84% (n = 90) were ESBL producers, many of which were also not susceptible to sulfonamides (99%), quinolones (81%) and aminoglycosides (79%). The majority of ESBL-producing strains harboured all three investigated bla genes. Conclusion: The high prevalence of ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae in clinical isolates from Côte d’Ivoire calls for revised empirical treatment regimens in critically ill patients with suspected Gram-negative infections, and the establishment of antimicrobial resistance surveillance systems

    Utilization of Calcined Sandstone and Calcined Laterite as an Adsorbent for the Removal of Arsenic from Water

    Calcined sandstone and calcined laterite were tested as adsorbent at a low cost for the removal of arsenic (As) from the drinking water. The natural materials were collected in Côte d'Ivoire, washed and then dried at a temperature of 60 ° C and finally calcined in an oven at the atmospheric air in several temperatures 300 ° C, 400 ° C, 500 ° C, 600 ° C and 700 ° C. The study of adsorption of the arsenic was realized for the various adsorbates. It showed that the biggest efficiency of the elimination was attributed to the calcined sandstone to 300°C and 400°C for laterite during 2h with a percentage that reached 99.4 %. At this calcination temperature, amount of arsenic in treated water, satisfying the World Health Organization (WHO) standard for drinking water at initial arsenic concentrations greater than 5 mg/L. The chemical composition of the obtained adsorbs was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal analysis (TGA-DSC). Adsorption has been described by the pseudo-second-order model. Calcination of sandstone and laterite increases the adsorption of arsenic on the materials.     Recombinant Poliovirus circulation among healthy children immunized with oral polio vaccine in Abidjan

    In order to assess the level of polio virus with natural recombinant genome and wild polio virus circulating in the environment of healthy children aged 0 to 5 years in Abidjan, 130 polio viruses made up of 26 polio type 1, 55 type 2 and 49 type 3 were identified by neutralisation test with monoclonal antibodies and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) targeting the VP1 and 3D1 gene. Four wild non Sabin-like (NSL) strains (3.1%): one type 2 and three type 3 were identified in non vaccinated children. One hundred and six (81.5%) isolates were Sabin-like, 20 (15.4%) were recombinant with the following polio virus profiles: 2 Sabin-like type 1/type 2, 3 Sabin-like type 3/type 1, 11 Sabin-like type 3/type 2 and one polio virus type 3 NSL/Sabin-like type 3. Intertypic vaccine/vaccine or vaccine/wild strain recombinant polio virus circulating among healthy children rate was high and suggested the need for a molecular surveillance of vaccine strains. Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) strains are well-known to revert to pathogenicity in vaccines. Therefore, the long term excretion of pathogenic OPV derived strains by some vaccinees needs to be considered quite seriously. It therefore suggested that all polio virus isolated from acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) be analyzed by restriction fragment length polymorphism and sequencing of the viral genome.     Ethnobotanic survey of the galactagogue plants used by Brong and Koulango, two indigenous peoples in Gontougo region/Côte d’Ivoire

    This study aims to inventory plants and traditional medicinal recipes used by the population of Tanda (Gontougo region, Côte d’Ivoire) to boost milk production in women.Using a questionnaire, the methods consisted in carrying out a survey near the traditional medicine actors of 15 localities. Among 47 actors of traditional medicine aged from 34 to 80 years investigated, 70.21 % were women. These women had more knowledge on the galactagogue plants than the men (29.79 % of the actors). They were represented by matrons, specialists in lactation, healers and saleswomen of medicinal plants. Among about fifteen listed galactagogue plants, Euphorbia hirta (Euphorbiaceae) was the most used plant. Leaves represented the majority of the medicinal preparations (73.33 %). These preparations were in 66.67 % of the cases associated with various other biological or mineral ingredients (pepper, meat, vegetables, ash, kaolin…). The direct application of crushings on mammary glands (cutaneous way) by friction constituted the principal route of administration (66.67 % of the medical receipts).Traditional medicine actors of the town of Tanda are actively interested in the search of solutions to the lacteal secretion issues which occur in the breast-feeding mothers. They have about fifteen medicinal plants which enable them to stimulate the production of maternal milk when a need is expressed
