PubMedID: 19551480We studied the susceptibility patterns to 15 different antibiotics and six heavy metals in Aeromonas spp. and Pseudomonas spp. isolated from Iskenderun Bay, Turkey (northeast Mediterranean Sea). A high percentage of Aeromonas isolates showed resistance to cefazolin (66.6%) and trimethoprim- sulphamethoxazole (66.6%). Amongst the Pseudomonas isolates, there was a high incidence of resistance to nitrofurantoin (86.2%), cefazolin (84.8%) and cefuroxime (71.7%). Most isolates showed tolerance to different concentrations of heavy metals, and minimal inhibition concentrations ranged from 25 to >3,200 µg/ml. The Aeromonas spp. and Pseudomonas spp. showed high resistance to copper of 98.3% and 75.4%, respectively, and low resistance to lead of 1.7% and 7.2%, respectively. Our results show that antibiotic and heavy metal resistant Aeromonas spp. and Pseudomonas spp. were widespread in Iskenderun Bay in 2007 and 2008. The increasing presence of antibiotic and heavy metal resistant Aeromonas spp. and Pseudomonas spp. may become a potential human health hazard. © Springer Science + Business Media B.V. 2009.EF2008BAP3Acknowledgements We would like to thank BAPKOM (Cukurova University) for the financial support of this work (Project number: EF2008BAP3). Posterior kapsül germe egzersizinin total ark hareket defisiti olan bireylerde anlık etkileri

Purpose: Total arc of motion deficit (TAMD) is a pathologic process contributing to shoulder injury. The purpose of the study was to examine the immediate effect on joint position sense and range of motion of posterior capsule stretching exercise, which is recommended for TAMD that can be seen in healthy individuals. Methods: The study included 28 healthy individuals who were diagnosed with TAMD via goniometric measurements. The shoulder with TAMD was accepted as the study group. The non-deficit shoulder was accepted as the control. In order to measure the joint position sense, the angle repetition test was performed using a laser pointer, and the range of motion (ROM) of the shoulder joints was measured using goniometer. After the measurements in both shoulders were completed, the posterior capsule stretching exercise was demonstrated for the shoulder with TAMD. After the exercise was completed, the measurements were repeated for both shoulders. Results: While no immediate change was found in joint position sense in the study group (p=0.280). Immediate significant changes were determined in internal rotation (p<0.001), external rotation (p=0.021), and horizontal adduction ranges (p=0.003).Conclusion: The TAMD is a condition that can be observed in healthy individuals. It was found that posterior capsule stretching exercise immediately decreased the TAMD but did not affect the joint position sense. The long-term effects could be examined in further studies.C1 [Taspinar, Ferruh; Taspinar, Betul] Izmir Democracy Univ, Fac Hlth Sci, Dept Physiotherapy & Rehabil, TR-35140 Izmir, Turkey.[Akkan, Hakan; Saracoglu, Ismail] Kutahya Hlth Sci Univ, Dept Physiotherapy & Rehabil, Fac Hlth Sci, Kutahya, Turkey.[Erel, Suat] Pamukkale Univ, Vocat Sch Phys Therapy & Rehabil, Denizli, Turkey

Isonet LTT, a new alternative material for mating disruption of Lobesia botrana (Den. & Schiff.) in Turkey

European Grapevine Moth (EGVM), Lobesia botrana (Den. & Schiff.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is the key pest of grape in Turkey. The efficacy of Isonet LTT has been tested against L. botranain comparison with registered Isonet L dispensers in Manisa and Canakkale, Turkey. One chemically treated vineyard was used to compare infestation levels for each location. By the emergence of the first EGVM adult, ∼320 Isonet LTT and 650 Isonet L dispensers/ha -including borders- were installed once a year. EGVM adults have been monitored in all plots by pheromone traps from the beginning of the flight until harvest. Infestation rates were compared. We indicated that both Isonet LTT and Isonet L dispensers showed excellent performance against the pest without additional treatment in 2015 and 2016. Average infestation rates of EGVM were below the threshold of 6%. EGVM infestation has been maintained at zero level by sprayings five and four times in the chemical treated vineyard in 2015 and 2016 in Manisa. Isonet LTT dispensers released 340 and 370 mg pheromone until harvest (19 August 2015 and 16 August 2016) in Manisa, whereas they released 360 and 410 mg of until harvest (27 August 2015 and 22 August 2016) in Canakkale, respectively

The effects of 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide riboside on the pancreas in neonatal streptozotocin-diabetic rats

In this study, we aimed to determine the alterations of beta-cell ultrastructure, insulin mRNA and protein products of the same gene on the pancreas of rats following long-term treatment of 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide riboside (AICAR). A single dose of streptozotocin (STZ) 100 mg/kg was injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) to 2-day-old newborn (n2) rats. The rats were divided into three groups. The first group was the n2 STZ-diabetic rats. The second group consisted of n2 STZ-diabetic rats treated with AICAR 10 mg/kg/day for one month. The third group was non-diabetic control rats. Our findings demonstrate that AICAR treatment decreases the blood glucose level but increases the body weight in n2 STZ-diabetic rats. In the AICAR-treated group, numerous beta cells showed increased insulin gene expression. We also observed increased exocytosis in this group, in an ultrastructural manner. As a result, it is suggested that AICAR may induce insulin synthesis and betacell regeneration in n2 STZ-diabetic rats

Second eyes to develop neovascular age-related macular degeneration have fewer symptoms and better one-year visual outcomes

Abstract Background This study compares the visual and anatomical outcomes for the eyes of patients who developed sequential neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), both at the time of diagnosis and at one year after treatment. Methods The study comprised a retrospective case series of 52 patients whose eyes were diagnosed sequentially with nAMD. All eyes were treated with three monthly loading doses of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents, followed by further intravitreal injections, as required. Baseline characteristics and outcomes at one year after diagnosis and initial treatment were compared between first and second eyes and included visual acuity (VA), central macular thickness (CMT), and pigment epithelial detachment (PED) height on optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. Results VA at diagnosis was better for second eyes compared with first eyes to develop nAMD (logMAR 0.68 ± 0.51 versus logMAR 0.41 ± 0.34, P = 0.002) and remained so at one year (logMAR 0.61 ± 0.60 versus logMAR 0.42 ± 0.37, P = 0.041). Similarly, PED height at diagnosis was higher in first eyes (225 ± 176 μm versus 155 ± 144 μm, P = 0.003) and also at one year (188 ± 137 μm versus 140 ± 112 μm, P = 0.019). Whereas most patients reported symptoms at first eye diagnosis (71.2%), half as many second eyes were symptomatic (28.8%, P < 0.001). Significantly more symptomatic first eyes experienced visual distortions (32.4% versus 13.3%) or scotomas (29.4% versus 6.7%), compared with a less specific visual complaint of blurry vision (38.2% versus 80.0%, P = 0.006). Conclusions Compared with first eyes to develop nAMD, second eyes tended to have better vision, smaller PED heights, and fewer symptoms likely because monitoring permitted earlier diagnosis
