    The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between the inferior vena cava distensibility and blood pressure. Six Japanese healthy males volunteered to participate in this study. We measured the cross-sectional area of inferior vena cava (CSAivc) and blood pressure at rest and during passive leg raising in supine position. We calculated the change rates of each parameter, based on the value at rest in supine position. We observed a negative correlation between the change rate of CSAivc and systolic blood pressure (P<0.05). These results suggest that the inferior vena cava distensibility affects partially systolic blood pressure

    In an attempt to determine the level and heat stability of residual catalase in somatic cells of acatalasemic Japanese, skin fibroblasts from an acatalasemic subject were cultured, and the catalase activity of the cultured fibroblasts was compared with that of cultured normal fibroblasts. Catalase activity was determined using an oxygen electrode. The residual catalase activity in cultured acatalasemic fibroblasts was 10% of the normal. The heat stability at 55 degrees C of residual catalase in the acatalasemic fibroblasts was similar to that of normal fibroblasts

    Simple way of finding Ba to Si deposition rate ratios for high photoresponsivity in BaSi2 films by Raman spectroscopy

    Since the photoresponsivity of BaSi2 is sensitive to a Ba-to-Si deposition rate ratio (R Ba/R Si), there is a need to determine the optimum value of R Ba/R Si. We grew 0.5 μm thick BaSi2 films with R Ba/R Si varied from 1.1–3.6 at 580 °C and 0.4–4.7 at 650 °C. The photoresponsivity reached a maximum at R Ba/R Si = 2.2 and 1.2, respectively. Raman spectroscopy revealed that the crystalline quality of BaSi2 became better with decreasing R Ba/R Si. However, as R Ba/R Si decreased further beyond these values, excess Si precipitated, showing that the optimum value of R Ba/R Si should be as small as possible without causing Si precipitates to form

    A 26-year-old female with Bartter's syndrome associated with Graves' disease is reported. This patient had a history of Graves' disease from the age of 22 and anti-thyroid drug (Methimazole) had been administered for 2 years. Thyroid function returned to normal but general fatigue and polyuria continued. Hypokalemia was diagnosed at 25 years of age and she was referred to our hospital for evaluation. Blood pressure was normal and laboratory data revealed normal thyroid function, hypokalemic alkalosis, high plasma renin activity and high plasma aldosterone concentration. She showed normal pressor sensitivity to norepinephrine infusion, grossly diminished pressor sensitivity to exogenous angiotensin II infusion compared with the normal. A renal biopsy specimen showed juxtaglomerular cell hyperplasia. Electron microscopy confirmed lacis cell (agranular cell) proliferation.</p

    Effect of Environmental Change while Climbing Mt. Daisen on Forced Vital Capacity and Forced Expiratory Volume % in Young Women

    The aim of the present study was to clarify the effects of environmental change while climbing Mt. Daisen on forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume % in young women in summer. Seven healthy Japanese women (age: 22.6 ± 4.2 years) volunteered to climb Mt. Daisen (1,709m), located in Tottori prefecture, in August. Participants\u27 expiratory forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume % (FEV_%) and arterial oxygen saturation (SpO_2) were measured at 4 points (Ground: 10m, Rest point: 780m, Summit: 1,709m, Goal point: 780m). The measurements were conducted soon after the subjects\u27 arrival at each point. The degree of dyspnea sensation was measured at Ground, Rest point, Goal point and at each station. There were no significant changes in FVC. FEV_% at the summit was significantly lower than at the Ground and Rest point. No significant differences were found in SpO_2 at each measuring point. The degree of dyspnea sensation at each station soon after the subjects\u27 arrival was significantly higher than those at the Rest point. The results of this study indicated mild airway contraction induced by stresses on the respiratory system from increasing exercise intensity during an ascent of Mt. Daisen

    The phosphate clamp: a small and independent motif for nucleic acid backbone recognition

    The 1.7 Å X-ray crystal structure of the B-DNA dodecamer, [d(CGCGAATTCGCG)]2 (DDD)-bound non-covalently to a platinum(II) complex, [{Pt(NH3)3}2-µ-{trans-Pt(NH3)2(NH2(CH2)6NH2)2}](NO3)6 (1, TriplatinNC-A,) shows the trinuclear cation extended along the phosphate backbone and bridging the minor groove. The square planar tetra-am(m)ine Pt(II) units form bidentate N-O-N complexes with OP atoms, in a Phosphate Clamp motif. The geometry is conserved and the interaction prefers O2P over O1P atoms (frequency of interaction is O2P > O1P, base and sugar oxygens > N). The binding mode is very similar to that reported for the DDD and [{trans-Pt(NH3)2(NH2(CH2)6(NH3+)}2-µ-{trans-Pt(NH3)2(NH2(CH2)6NH2)2}](NO3)8 (3, TriplatinNC), which exhibits in vivo anti-tumour activity. In the present case, only three sets of Phosphate Clamps were found because one of the three Pt(II) coordination spheres was not clearly observed and was characterized as a bare Pt2+ ion. Based on the electron density, the relative occupancy of DDD and the sum of three Pt(II) atoms in the DDD-1 complex was 1:1.69, whereas the ratio for DDD-2 was 1:2.85, almost the mixing ratio in the crystallization drop. The high repetition and geometric regularity of the motif suggests that it can be developed as a modular nucleic acid binding device with general utility
