    Using Motivational Interviewing in Public Health Practice to Prevent Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

    Background: Surveys of women in prenatal care at busy clinics in Detroit, Michigan have reported 12.5% continue to drink during pregnancy (Flynn et al, 2003) and women in substance abuse treatment programs in Wayne County, MI have an incidence rate for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) of 4 in 1,000 births, double the national prevalence rate of FAS. The goal of the current study was to intervene with women at high risk for an alcohol-exposed pregnancy using techniques of Brief Motivational Interviewing (BMI) in a verbal and written format. Methods: One third (33%) of 1,784 women screened at Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion (DHWP) primary health care clinics and HIV/AIDS-STD clinic were found to be at risk of an alcohol exposed pregnancy defined as binge drinking (at least 4 drinks per occasion) or heavy drinking (8 or more drinks per week) in the last three months, while they were having sex with inconsistent or no contraception. This intervention utilized Brief Motivational Interviewing (BMI) and developed written materials based on the principles of BMI to 1) assess readiness for change, 2) strengthen motivation to change, and 3) provide an individualized change plan. For women who received the Individual Level Intervention (n = 77), four sessions of BMI were conducted (two in-person, two via telephone) over a six-month period. A Self-Guided Change version of the intervention (Community Level Intervention) was offered for women (n = 327) who preferred to utilize the materials at home and receive two follow-up telephone calls following baseline interview, also during a six-month period. Results: Both strategies, based on principles of Motivational Interviewing, have been shown to be effective in reducing drinking and increasing contraceptive use. Out of the 404 women participating in the program, 310 (77%) women completed at least one follow-up and were included in the analyses. Overall, 59.9% of the women enrolled in both interventions were no longer at risk for an alcohol-exposed pregnancy at the end of the intervention six months later. Conclusion: Brief Motivational Interviewing, delivered verbally or in a written format, is an effective method of reducing women’s risky behaviors for an alcohol exposed pregnancy. The Individual Level Intervention that included 2 face-to-face sessions resulted in less attrition than the Self-Guided Change version which relied on phone and mail contact only

    Pasture Management in the US Midwest – An Assessment of Current Practices and Future Opportunities

    Managed grazing offers significant potential to improve the sustainability of livestock farms in the US Midwest, however the benefits of managed grazing are largely influenced by the management practices employed on farm. The objective of this study was to gain an understanding of current grazing practices on Midwest farms and to identify the knowledge and support needs of graziers. A total of 185 responses were received from a range of different enterprises including dairy, beef, and sheep production. Results show a substantial degree of variation in grazing management practices between respondents and highlights significant scope for improvement on farms particularly in the areas of pasture measurement and budgeting, and grazing infrastructure. Reported benefits of managed grazing included lower environmental impact, better pasture and animal performance, better animal health and welfare, and lower costs. Challenges with managed grazing included time and labor input, maintaining pasture quantity and quality during the grazing season, adverse weather conditions such as excessive rain and drought, and animal health challenges such as heat stress, parasites and in some cases coyotes. The study highlighted opportunities for research and extension providers to better support farmers with information and advice and identified knowledge gaps in areas such as pasture species selection, soil fertility, grazing infrastructure, pasture budgeting, legumes, and pasture measurement. The study successfully gained an insight into graziers in the Midwest, the outputs of which, will be valuable to a number of key stakeholders going forward, including researchers, extension agents, farmers and policy makers

    Invasive Lionfish Drive Atlantic Coral Reef Fish Declines

    Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) have spread swiftly across the Western Atlantic, producing a marine predator invasion of unparalleled speed and magnitude. There is growing concern that lionfish will affect the structure and function of invaded marine ecosystems, however detrimental impacts on natural communities have yet to be measured. Here we document the response of native fish communities to predation by lionfish populations on nine coral reefs off New Providence Island, Bahamas. We assessed lionfish diet through stomach contents analysis, and quantified changes in fish biomass through visual surveys of lionfish and native fishes at the sites over time. Lionfish abundance increased rapidly between 2004 and 2010, by which time lionfish comprised nearly 40% of the total predator biomass in the system. The increase in lionfish abundance coincided with a 65% decline in the biomass of the lionfish's 42 Atlantic prey fishes in just two years. Without prompt action to control increasing lionfish populations, similar effects across the region may have long-term negative implications for the structure of Atlantic marine communities, as well as the societies and economies that depend on them

    The Role of Citizens in Detecting and Responding to a Rapid Marine Invasion

    Documenting and responding to species invasions requires innovative strategies that account for ecological and societal complexities. We used the recent expansion of Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans/miles) throughout northern Gulf of Mexico coastal waters to evaluate the role of stakeholders in documenting and responding to a rapid marine invasion. We coupled an online survey of spearfishers and citizen science monitoring programs with traditional fishery-independent data sources and found that citizen observations documented lionfish 1–2 years earlier and more frequently than traditional reef fish monitoring programs. Citizen observations first documented lionfish in 2010 followed by rapid expansion and proliferation in 2011 (+367%). From the survey of spearfishers, we determined that diving experience and personal observations of lionfish strongly influenced perceived impacts, and these perceptions were powerful predictors of support for initiatives. Our study demonstrates the value of engaging citizens for assessing and responding to large-scale and time-sensitive conservation problems

    Biology and ecology of the invasive lionfishes, Pterois miles and Pterois volitans

    The Indo-Pacific lionfishes, Pterois miles and P. volitans, are now established along the U.S. southeast coast, Bermuda, Bahamas, and are becoming established in the Caribbean. While these lionfish are popular in the aquarium trade, their biology and ecology are poorly understood in their native range. Given the rapid establishment and potential adverse impacts of these invaders, comprehensive studies of their biology and ecology are warranted. Here we provide a synopsis of lionfish biology and ecology including invasion chronology, taxonomy, local abundance, reproduction, early life history and dispersal, venomology, feeding ecology, parasitology, potential impacts, and control and management. This information was collected through review of the primary literature and published reports and by summarizing current observations. Suggestions for future research on invasive lionfish in their invaded regions are provided

    Comparison of MSIS and Jacchia atmospheric density models for orbit determination and propagation

    Two atmospheric density model families that are commonly chosen for orbit determination and propagation, Jacchia and MSIS, are compared for accuracy. The Jacchia 70 model, the MSISE-90 model, and the NRLMSISE-00 model may each be used to determine orbits over fitspans of several days and then to propagate forward. With observations kept over the propagation period, residuals may be computed and the accuracy of each model evaluated. We have performed this analysis for over 4000 cataloged satellites with perigee below 1000km for September-­October 1999, and the 60 HASDM calibration satellites with a large observation set for February 2001. The purpose of this study is to form a picture of the relative merits of the drag models in a comprehensive view, using all satellites in a manner consistent with the operational practice of US space surveillance centers. A further goal is to refine this knowledge to understand the orbital parameter regions where one of the models may be consistently superior
