    Local Actors in Top-Down Implementation of Curricular Reform in Benin’s Primary Education System

    Since the 1990 Jomtien Conference on Education for All, basic education in developing countries has attracted growing attention, both globally and do-mestically. Many policies have been initiated to improve educational access, quality and equity. While the accrued interest in education has followed a certain rationality, context-specific realities have nonetheless imposed dif-ferent turns on the planned interventions. An actor-oriented approach to policy study offers the opportunity to uncover how grassroots actors from the periphery unpack, transform and domesticate globally promoted educa-tion policies. Using an actor-oriented approach, the current study sets out to examine policy in practice. It focuses on grassroots actors in the implementation of a competency-based curricular reform in Benin’s primary education system. In Benin, the development promise attributed to the new curricular para-digm was quickly contradicted by considerable resistance from grassroots actors. Although opinions converged on the failure of the school system to yield satisfactory learning outcomes for students despite the unprecedented nature of the reform policy, actors in the system diverged on the probable causes of this shortcoming. The bone of contention in the debate was the new curricula, which had been initiated to improve Benin’s school system but instead came to exemplify problems of ownership and appropriation at the grassroots level. Bottom-up implementation scholars and normative discourse state une-quivocally that front-line actors’ ownership and appropriation of planned measures are prerequisites for the effective implementation of public policy. In this light, the current study examines the policy debate on the curricular reform in Benin to explore how the controversy affected implementation of the education policy. Set in the tradition of actor-oriented policy studies, the research follows a qualitative design, combining the techniques of extensive fieldwork, interviews, focus-group discussions, direct observations, docu-mentary investigation and analytic induction

    Cosmological Feedback from High-Redshift Dwarf Galaxies

    We model how repeated supernova explosions in high-redshift dwarf starburst galaxies drive superbubbles and winds out of the galaxies. We compute the efficiencies of metal and mass ejection and energy transport from the galactic potentials, including the effect of cosmological infall of external gas. The starburst bubbles quickly blow out of small, high-redshift, galactic disks, but must compete with the ram pressure of the infalling gas to escape into intergalactic space. We show that the assumed efficiency of the star formation rate dominates the bubble evolution and the metal, mass, and energy feedback efficiencies. With star formation efficiency f*=0.01, the ram pressure of infall can confine the bubbles around high-redshift dwarf galaxies with circular velocities v_c>52 km/s. We can expect high metal and mass ejection efficiencies, and moderate energy transport efficiencies in halos with v_c~30-50 km/s and f*~0.01 as well as in halos with v_c~100 km/s and f*>>0.01. Such haloes collapse successively from 1-2 sigma peaks in LambdaCDM Gaussian density perturbations as time progresses. These dwarf galaxies can probably enrich low and high-density regions of intergalactic space with metals to 10^-3-10^-2 Zsun as they collapse at z~8 and z<5 respectively. They also may be able to provide adequate turbulent energy to prevent the collapse of other nearby halos, as well as to significantly broaden Lyman-alpha absorption lines to v_rms~20-40 km/s. We compute the timescales for the next starbursts if gas freely falls back after a starburst, and find that, for star formation efficiencies as low as f*<0.01, the next starburst should occur in less than half the Hubble time at the collapse redshift. This suggests that episodic star formation may be ubiquitous in dwarf galaxies.Comment: Accepted for ApJ v613, 60 pages, 15 figure

    Cannabidiol Prevents Motor and Cognitive Impairments Induced by Reserpine in Rats

    Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychotomimetic compound from Cannabis sativa that presents antipsychotic, anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. In Parkinson's disease patients, CBD is able to attenuate the psychotic symptoms induced by L-DOPA and to improve quality of life. Repeated administration of reserpine in rodents induces motor impairments that are accompanied by cognitive deficits, and has been applied to model both tardive dyskinesia and Parkinson's disease. The present study investigated whether CBD administration would attenuate reserpine-induced motor and cognitive impairments in rats. Male Wistar rats received four injections of CBD (0.5 or 5 mg/kg) or vehicle (days 2-5). On days 3 and 5, animals received also one injection of 1 mg/kg reserpine or vehicle. Locomotor activity, vacuous chewing movements, and catalepsy were assessed from day 1 to day 7. On days 8 and 9, we evaluated animals' performance on the plus-maze discriminative avoidance task, for learning/memory assessment. CBD (0.5 and 5 mg/kg) attenuated the increase in catalepsy behavior and in oral movements - but not the decrease in locomotion induced by reserpine. CBD (0.5 mg/kg) also ameliorated the reserpine-induced memory deficit in the discriminative avoidance task.     Endothelial dysfunction, carotid artery plaque burden, and conventional exercise-induced myocardial ischemia as predictors of coronary artery disease prognosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>While both flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) in the brachial artery (BA), which measures endothelium-dependent vasodilatation, and intima-media thickness (IMT) in the carotid artery are correlated with the prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD), it is not clear which modality is a better predictor of CAD. Furthermore, it has not been fully determined whether either of these modalities is superior to conventional ST-segment depression on exercise stress electrocardiogram (ECG) as a predictor. Thus, the goal of the present study was to compare the predictive value of FMD, IMT, and stress ECG for CAD prognosis.</p> <p>Methods and Results</p> <p>A total of 103 consecutive patients (62 ± 9 years old, 79 men) with clinically suspected CAD had FMD and nitroglycerin-induced dilation (NTG-D) in the BA, carotid artery IMT measurement using high-resolution ultrasound, and exercise treadmill testing. The 73 CAD patients and 30 normal coronary patients were followed for 50 ± 15 months. Fifteen patients had coronary events during this period (1 cardiac death, 2 non-fatal myocardial infarctions, 3 acute heart failures, and 9 unstable anginas). On Kaplan-Meier analysis, only FMD and stress ECG were significant predictors for cardiac events.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Brachial endothelial function as reflected by FMD and conventional exercise stress testing has comparable prognostic value, whereas carotid artery plaque burden appears to be less powerful for predicting future cardiac events.</p

    Controle associado de Alphitobius diaperinuse efeito de microrganismos eficazes no desenvolvimento de Beauveria bassiana

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência de Beauveria bassiana (Bb), terra diatomácea (TD) e microrganismos eficazes (EM-4), associados ou não, no controle de Alphitobius diaperinus, e o efeito de EM-4 no desenvolvimento de B. bassiana. Os agentes de controle (Bb, TD e EM-4), em diferentes concentrações e combinações, foram aplicados em uma mistura de cama-de-frango e ração, em que os insetos foram acondicionados por dez dias. Avaliaram-se, in vitro: a germinação, as unidades formadoras de colônia (UFC), o crescimento vegetativo e a produtividade de conídios de Bb em contato com suspensão aquosa de EM-4 (1%) não filtrada e filtrada. Os maiores índices de mortalidade foram observados nos tratamentos TD + Bb + EM-4 e TD + Bb, nas maiores concentrações. Verificou-se efeito não-aditivo sinérgico para TD + Bb nas três concentrações. Nos testes com EM-4 filtrado, não houve diferença em relação à testemunha quanto à germinação e às UFC, entretanto, o crescimento vegetativo e a produtividade de conídios foram negativamente afetados. O uso conjunto de B. bassiana e terra diatomácea, para o manejo de populações de A. diaperinus, pode reduzir o uso de produtos químicos

    The agricultural sector has an important role in supporting the national economy. The role is the creation of food security, a contributor to gross domestic product, job creation, poverty alleviation, a provider of food and industrial raw materials, a source of community income. All of the respondents in this study have farmed livestock. The application of the pattern of community service to farmer groups in Magelang Regency and Temanggung Regency shows that most farmers/breeders are of productive age and can increase agricultural productivity after receiving guidance from the Ministry of Agriculture program. Communication patterns have the same perception of group goals, division of tasks with members' abilities, trust in the group, level of satisfaction with the group, channels for communicating id / ideas for group progress and the achievement of member goals through the group. Trust in the group and the level of satisfaction with the group increased because of the guidance from the Ministry of Agriculture
