Border Detection of Skin Tumor Images

    Get PDF
Color border programs are used to try to obtain a border for skin tumors. A series of programs are used to obtain a color segmented image. This color segmented image can then be passed through a program that searches for the border, Colborder. Simple”. Problems have occurred in trying to obtain the color segmented image. Normal images were used instead of the color segmented image as input to the color border detection program. The program was unsuccessful in finding the border

No More Cuts: The Curious Fate of Self-Mutilation in Its Development

    Get PDF
In this article, we present descriptions of four young women with relatively severe personality disorders. All four were in psychodynamic psychotherapy and all had the symptom of self-cutting. During their treatment, it became evident that their self-cutting had undergone a transformation and a new symptom had appeared in its place. In three, self-cutting was substituted by behaviors that we might call cutting equivalents and, in the fourth, by an enhanced self-reflective attitude and by journal-writing. We suggest that symptom-replacement for self-cutting may be common in its developmental course or in its course as it becomes influenced by psychotherapy, and that the replacement is sometimes, perhaps often, salutary

Hosseini’s The Kite Runner: Some Critical Surveys, Impacts and Suggestions

    Get PDF
Khaled Hossieni’s The Kite Runner (2003) is a multi-dimensional novel, which gives a variety of material for research from diverse angles. The critics and reviewers have explored the thematic, structural, political, denominational and strategic understanding of Afghanistan in their reviews. Their focus on ethnic through political to religious conflicts is revealed through socio-cultural dynamics of the characters. This study aims at focusing on the existing literature on the novel in such a way as to highlight its symbolic/ psychological suggestiveness. The in-depth analysis of the study shows that both the social and psychological sides of the humans are juxtaposed. If one side is balanced, the other will be developed and vice versa. Hence, the fundamental finding of the paper shows that prejudice, lack of cooperation, evils and stereotypes are caused by the psychological imbalance which can be corrected if one works on self-examination, self-criticism and self-improvement. Keywords: The Kite Runner; Political; Multi-dimensional; Psychological Imbalance; Self-examination

Entropy Analysis of the Peristaltic Flow of Hybrid Nanofluid Inside an Elliptic Duct with Sinusoidally Advancing Boundaries

    Get PDF
Peristaltic flow of hybrid nanofluid inside a duct having sinusoidally advancing boundaries and elliptic cross-section is mathematically investigated. The notable irreversibility effects are also examined in this mathematical research by considering a descriptive entropy analysis. In addition, this work provides a comparison analysis for two distinct nanofluid models: a hybrid model (Cu-Ag/water) and a phase flow model (Cu/water). A comprehensive graphical description is also provided to interpret the physical aspects of this mathematical analysis

TO BE RESPONSIBLE SOCIALLY IS VIABLE FINANCIALLY

This paper aims to evaluate the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on Company’s Financial Performance (CFP) operating or based in Pakistan. Emerging CSR practices in the developed world have raised question about the inclination of the developing world towards CSR. Pakistan being a developing country, its corporate sector is more concerned about profit maximization than CSR. Various studies around the globe have established that CSR has a positive impact on the financial performance of a company. In this study, secondary data has been used from audited annual reports of 26 companies listed in KSE of similar size from different sectors, which are striving towards better CSR. The data ranges from 2008 to 2012 (5 years). The researchers have used Stakeholder theory to measure CSR; stakeholders include Government, Employees, Suppliers, Creditors, Shareholders and Customers. Return on Asset (ROA) was used as a surrogate for Company’s financial performance (CFP). The result of Multiple Regression Model showed a significant impact of CSR on CFP for only a few stakeholders. After adjusting the model according to Pakistan’s scenario, customers, shareholders and creditors were identified as the key stakeholders for CSR to have an impact on CFP. Analyses also bifurcated the results for KSE 100 index companies and Non KSE 100 index companies in order to have an idea as to how firm size disparity affects CSR’s impact on CFP. The outcomes of the research would be helpful for the corporate decision makers, government policy formulators and other related quarters to understand the impact of CSR on CFP with reference to Pakistan

Birth weight estimation--a sonographic model for Pakistani population

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVE: To develop a sonographic birth weight estimation model for Pakistani population and to validate the published models in the same population. METHODS: Data was collected for pregnant women who presented to Radiology Department of Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi from January 2007 to July 2008 and had undergone ultrasound estimation of foetal weight within 4 days prior to a term delivery (37-42 weeks gestation). The neonate\u27s actual birth weight was used to validate the published foetal weight estimation models and modified sonographic birth weight estimation model was derived for our population by using linear regression. RESULTS: Modified sonographic birth weight estimation model for our population was derived by using foetal parameters. No significant difference (p-value \u3e 0.05) of actual and predicted birth weight derived from Our regression model, Campbell and Woo models was noted, however least difference (p = 0.7) was identified between our predicted model (Mean difference 14 +/- 37.7 g). CONCLUSION: Our sonographic modified regression model of foetal weight estimation gave the least difference with actual neonatal birth weight and can be reliably used in our population. Hadlock1, Hadlock2 and Woo2 models are not appropriate in our setting or should be used carefully while predicting foetal weight in our population

A Rare Presentation of Cardiac Aspergilloma in an Immunocompetent Host: Case Report and Literature Review

    Get PDF
Cardiac aspergilloma is exceptionally rare with only a handful of cases reported and majority of them being in immunocompromised patients. Here, we present a case of cardiac aspergilloma involving the right and left ventricle in an immunocompetent patient that initially presented with acute limb ischemia. He was later found to have a cardiac mass with histopathological diagnosis confirming Aspergillus species. Despite aggressive medical and surgical interventions, the patient had an unfavorable outcome due to low suspicion of invasive fungal endocarditis given his immunocompetent status. Cardiac aspergilloma should remain in the differential diagnosis of immunocompetent patients as early clinical suspicion will result in early treatment and decreased mortality. Novel therapies are required to decrease mortality in the future from this fatal disease

Impacts of signal free corridors on the incidence of road traffic accidents in Karachi

    Get PDF
Increase in road Traffic Accidents is a global phenomenon and Pakistan is no exception. In Karachi, this problem becomes severe due to rapid growth of population. This menace is ruining the lives of thousands of people and making Karachi a worrisome place to live. Recent road geometrical transitions in the city with insufficient accessories have been reducing the problem of traffic congestion to a limited extent. On the contrary, this has erupted as a problem of Road Traffic Accidents which is reaching out of proportions. Recently, induction of a unique feature named, Signal Free Corridor in Karachi has cost many precious lives. In this paper GIS based analysis has been employed by using buffer technique to document the number of Road Traffic Accidents on four Signal Free Corridors, evaluated for five different years. It was revealed that the minor injury accidents were highest in all four Signal Free Corridors. However, in some cases number of severe and fatal road accident cases showed the emerging trend as well. Four types of road users were identified on these corridors out of which riders/pillion and pedestrians were the most vulnerable to Road Traffic Accidents. There is an emergent need to enforce the vehicle speed rules and regulations that would provide breathing time to traffic as well as reduce the incidents of consistent traffic blockages and rising Road Traffic Accidents
