    Does Gangsta Rap Music Cross Good Judgment Lines and Decency Values?

    There has been much controversy associated with gangsta rap music over the 1990\u27s decade. This manuscript takes a closer look at gangsta rap music through a descriptive analysis, exploring these topics: social construction of reality, sexism, violence, community actions, and their possible negative influences on societal values. The positive and negative implications involving gangsta rap music are compared using lyrics from artists whose music has been in question in the past. Using a semantic differential survey and focus group interviews, gangsta rap music is analyzed, examining its exposure to people, possible promotion and communication of negative societal values. The study involved one hundred-twenty students for the semantic differential survey at a medium sized mid-western university. The results indicated that African-Americans had a higher exposure rate to gangsta rap music after hearing fifteen-second clips than Euro-Americans. Pretests indicated significant differences between African-Americans and Euro-Americans regarding exposure to gangsta rap music and musical selection. It was also determined from two focus group interviews that seven variables were in common between the factor analysis test and the focus group interviews involved in the study

    Within organizations, the communicative phenomenon of humor is commonplace. Humorous talk is just as important and frequent to regular discourse that takes place between organizational members. In this inquiry we examine humor as a particular way of communicating between members of a small Midwestern United States organization. Specifically, we examine how three functions of humor (i.e., joking, sarcasm, and teasing) are used amongst members during normal business hours (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). Using ethnography of communication, we conduct both fieldwork and interviews discovering that this organization exemplifies humor as a socially constructed phenomenon to complete the typical workday

    Newborn infants with bilious vomiting: a national audit of neonatal transport services

    Objective: The precautionary approach to urgently investigate infants with bilious vomiting has increased the numbers referred to transport teams and tertiary surgical centres. The aim of this national UK audit was to quantify referrals, determine the frequency of surgical diagnoses, with the purpose to inform the consequent inclusion of these referals in the national 'time critical' dataset. Method: A prospective, multi-centre UK-wide audit was conducted (01 August 2015 to 31 October 2015). Term infants, ā‰¤ 7 days of age, referred for transfer due to bilious vomiting were included. Data at the time of transport and outcomes at seven days after transfer were collected by the local teams and tranferred anonymously for analysis. Results: Sixteen teams contributed data on 165 cases. Teams that consider such transfers as ā€œtime-criticalā€ responded significantly faster than those that do not classify bilious vomiting as time-critical. There was a surgical diagnosis in 22% cases and 7% had a condition where delayed treatment may have caused bowel loss. Most surgical problems could be predicted by clinical and/or X-ray findings but two infants with normal X-ray features were found to have a surgical problem. Conclusion: The results of this study support the need for infants with bilious vomiting to be investigated for potential surgical pathologies, but the data do not provide evidence for the default designation of such referrals as ā€œtime critical.ā€ Decisions should be made by clinical collaboration between the teams and, where appropriate, swift transfer provided

One of the most difficult and significant subjects in hydrogen energy technology is efficiently creating hydrogen from water by utilizing renewable resources such as solar light. Solar-based hydrogen production comprises several routes, namely, photocatalytic, photoelectrocatalytic, and photobiological decomposition. An efficient photocatalyst is desired to accomplish the above objective by utilizing the first two routes with a minimal rate of recombination of photo-generated charge carriers. In this chapter, strategies for preventing recombination of charge carriers in photocatalysts and the development of photocatalysts have been focused on, and its utilization in the procedure for the production of hydrogen via photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic processes is described

    Innovative investigation of zinc oxide nanoparticles used in dentistry

    Dental caries is a major lifestyle concern as dental components affect the face of an individual. The issue of tooth decay occurs in every age group throughout the globe. Researchers are probing incipient implements and techniques to develop filling agents for decayed teeth. Zinc oxide (ZnO) powder is utilized mostly as a filling agent. Nanotechnology enhanced the efficiency of compounds of metal oxides utilized for dental caries. The present study aims to investigate the properties of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized chemically (using ZnCl2 and NaOH) as well as biologically (using aqueous leaf extract of Murraya paniculata). The XRD patterns confirm that ZnO NPs have a hexagonal crystalline structure with particle sizes of 47 nm and 55 nm for chemically and biologically synthesized NPs, respectively. The FE-SEM data confirm the nanorod and spherical/cubical shape morphologies for the chemically and biologically synthesized ZnO NPs, respectively. FTIR data show the peaks between 4000 and 450 cm(-1) of the functional groups of -OH, C-O, -C-H-, and Zn-O bonds. The UV-Vis absorption study indicates a peak around 370 nm and a hump around 360 nm corresponding to the chemically and biologically synthesized ZnO NPs, respectively. An antibacterial bioassay was performed and compared with commercially available ZnO bulk powder against tooth decaying pathogens, viz., Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and Lactobacillus fermentum, and found that both ZnO NPs had results closer to those of the standard drug (rifampicin). Thus, the synthesized ZnO NPs may be utilized as nano-drugs for the application of tooth decaying filling agents.     Identification of a Vitamin-D Receptor Antagonist, MeTC7, which Inhibits the Growth of Xenograft and Transgenic Tumors In Vivo

    Vitamin-D receptor (VDR) mRNA is overexpressed in neuroblastoma and carcinomas of lung, pancreas, and ovaries and predicts poor prognoses. VDR antagonists may be able to inhibit tumors that overexpress VDR. However, the current antagonists are arduous to synthesize and are only partial antagonists, limiting their use. Here, we show that the VDR antagonist MeTC7 (5), which can be synthesized from 7-dehydrocholesterol (6) in two steps, inhibits VDR selectively, suppresses the viability of cancer cell-lines, and reduces the growth of the spontaneous transgenic TH-MYCN neuroblastoma and xenografts in vivo. The VDR selectivity of 5 against RXRĪ± and PPAR-Ī³ was confirmed, and docking studies using VDR-LBD indicated that 5 induces major changes in the binding motifs, which potentially result in VDR antagonistic effects. These data highlight the therapeutic benefits of targeting VDR for the treatment of malignancies and demonstrate the creation of selective VDR antagonists that are easy to synthesize
