Space shuttle: Aerodynamic characteristics of a composite booster/040A orbiter launch configuration with fin and booster body configuration effect contribution

An investigation was made of the fin configuration and booster body configuration effects on a composite booster/040A orbiter launch configuration. Aerodynamic performance and stability characteristics in pitch and yaw were obtained. Configurations tested included two stepped cylindrical bodies of different lengths with a conical nose, four fin shapes of various sizes and aspect ratios mounted in different positions around the base of the bodies, two base flare angles and three 040A orbiter configurations. The orbiter variations included a tailless configuration and two tail sizes. A tailless booster launch configuration with deflected petals (expanded flare sectors) was also tested. The model scale was 0.003366. Data were converted to coefficient form in near real time, punched on cards, and tabulated. The cards used in conjunction with a Benson-Lehner plotter were used to provide plotted data. At the end of the test, tabulated input forms were completed for the SADSAC computer program to aid in publishing the final test data report

Forebody and vertical stabilizer effects on directional stability of a reusable LOX/RP (061) booster AR 12161-2

Results are presented of a wind tunnel test on the directional stability of space shuttle booster configurations. The test was conducted at the 14-inch trisonic tunnel starting 6 December 1971 and continued through 11 December 1971 for a total of 66 occupancy hours. Configurations tested included a cylindrical body with two axisymmetrical noses, one with and without canopy, one delta wing, located in two positions, five vertical tails (including a V tail), two having split rudders, ventral fins, two sets of chines, three airbreathing engine pods, and rocket engine shrouds. The Weed and Seed Site is located in west central Jackson, MS. According to the 2000 census, the population for the area was 23,525. More specifically, the demographics of the area include a population that is more than ninety percent African American with a per capita income of less than $13,000 and a poverty ratio that ranges from 30$39,000 or less. Statistics indicates low income residents of the Weed and Seed community and residents with similar demographics often use alternatives financial resources such a check cashing businesses, pawn shops, rent to own, title loans payday loans and rapid anticipation loan organizations. As a result of the exorbitant fees they pay, resources that could be used for improving their quality of life is significantly reduced. This project attempts to identify some of the problems associated with the predatory financial institutions such as the targeting of low-income communities and the negative impact they have on the lives of the residents. More importantly, this project will offer alternative financial resources for the residents that could help to improve their economic quality of life. As a result of the residents having more positive alternatives for meeting their financial needs, they can use the additional resources to help them improve their quality of life. Bearing Children, Bearing Risks: Feminist Leadership for Progressive Regulation of Compensated Surrogacy in the United States

Compensated surrogacy—an arrangement in which a woman carries and gives birth to a child for someone else in exchange for money—intimately affects women. Yet, feminist law reformers have not led efforts to regulate this practice in the United States. Their absence is notable given the significant influence of feminist lawmaking in a host of other areas where women’s interests are at stake. This lack of feminist law reform leadership can be understood, however, in light of the complex issues that surrogacy raises—complexity that has long divided feminists. In response to efforts to pass surrogacy legislation in Washington State in 2010, Legal Voice, a women’s rights organization founded in 1978, worked to develop a progressive, feminist approach to compensated surrogacy. The organization adopted a framework based primarily on two schools of feminist legal thought—an anti-essentialist analysis and a pragmatic approach—under the overarching goal of promoting reproductive justice. This Article proposes the application of these principles to the development of any surrogacy legislation. However, my primary purpose is to urge feminist law advocates to take leadership of surrogacy law reform. Whatever the feminist objections to the practice, people increasingly engage in surrogacy arrangements to create families and to help others to do so. But it is the women who hold the least power and face the highest risk of economic exploitation who bear the most significant risks in these arrangements. Thus, it is imperative that progressive feminists meet the challenge of addressing the complexity of compensated surrogacy, and develop a shared agenda for ensuring reproductive justice in the context of assisted reproductive technologies

The synthesis and adsorption properties of some carbohydrate-terminated dendrimer wedges

A range of dendritic molecules that are designed to bind to a cotton surface has been synthesised. The architecture of the molecules allows the location of various functional, property modifying units at the focus and the attachment of recognition groups at the periphery of a dendritic molecule with wedge topology. The synthesis and characterisation of dendrimer wedges up to the second-generation using a divergent approach has been performed. These wedges are readily built up using a simple and efficient stepwise pathway from the central core, and surface recognising species are subsequently attached to the molecule utilising procedures developed in conjunction with Unilever Research Laboratories. Work has been carried out to assess their adsorption onto a cotton surface and the postulated adsorption mechanism is discussed
