    Coordination chemistry of amide-functionalised tetraazamacrocycles: structural, relaxometric and cytotoxicity studies

    Three different tetraazamacrocyclic ligands containing four amide substituents that feature groups (namely allyl, styryl and propargyl groups) suitable for polymerisation have been synthesised. Gadolinium(III) complexes of these three ligands have been prepared as potential monomers for the synthesis of polymeric MRI contrast agents. To assess the potential of these monomers as MRI contrast agents, their relaxation enhancement properties and cytotoxicity have been determined. A europium(III) complex of one of these ligands (with propargyl substituents) is also presented together with its PARACEST properties. In addition, to gain further insight into the coordination chemistry of the tetra-propargyl substituted ligand, the corresponding zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes have been prepared.     Does Talking the Talk Help Walking the Walk? An Examination of the Effect of Vocal Attractiveness in Leader Effectiveness

    The authors tested the hypothesis that leaders\u27 vocal attractiveness is positively related to perceptions of leadership effectiveness. In a first study using vocal spectral analysis on a sample of U.S. presidents and Canadian prime ministers, vocal attractiveness accounted for significant variance in historians\u27 perceptions of leadership effectiveness (β = .35, p \u3c .05), explaining an additional 12% of the variance above that explained by personality, motives, and charisma. A second study of 255 subjects distributed into 85 teams in a laboratory setting found similar results for the relationship between vocal attractiveness and perceptions of leadership effectiveness. The second study also supported the hypothesis that personal reactions mediate the relationship between vocal attractiveness and perceptions of leadership effectiveness. In contrast, vocal attractiveness and personal reactions were found to have no significant effects on leadership effectiveness outcomes

    Visualization through magnetic resonance imaging of DNA internalized following "in vivo" electroporation.

    The ability to visualize plasmid DNA entrapment in muscle cells undergoing an "in vivo" electroporation treatment was investigated on BALB/c mice using a 7-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner using the paramagnetic Gd–DOTA–spd complex as imaging reporter. Gd–DOTA–spd bears a tripositively charged spermidine residue that yields a strong binding affinity toward the negatively charged DNA chain (6.4 kb, K a = 2.2 × 10 3 M −1 for approximately 2500 ± 500 binding sites). Cellular colocalization of Gd-DOTA-spd and plasmid DNA has been validated by histological analysis of excised treated muscle. In vivo MRI visualization of Gd-DOTA-spd distribution provides an excellent route to access the cellular entrapment of plasmid DNA upon applying an electroporation pulse

    Eight-Coordinate, Stable Fe(II) Complex as a Dual 19F and CEST Contrast Agent for Ratiometric pH Imaging

    Accurate mapping of small changes in pH is essential to the diagnosis of diseases such as cancer. The difficulty in mapping pH accurately in vivo resides in the need for the probe to have a ratiometric response so as to be able to independently determine the concentration of the probe in the body independently from its response to pH. The complex FeII-DOTAm-F12 behaves as an MRI contrast agent with dual 19F and CEST modality. The magnitude of its CEST response is dependent both on the concentration of the complex and on the pH, with a significant increase in saturation transfer between pH 6.9 and 7.4, a pH range that is relevant to cancer diagnosis. The signal-to-noise ratio of the 19F signal of the probe, on the other hand, depends only on the concentration of the contrast agent and is independent of pH. As a result, the complex can ratiometrically map pH and accurately distinguish between pH 6.9 and 7.4.
